Chapter 6: The Mother Who Buried Her Own Family
Ricardo pulled me behind the marble staircase as bullets shattered the front windows.
“Stay down!””
Men shouted outside.
Footsteps thundered across the entrance hall.
Sarah grabbed my hand.
“Clara, listen to me. Whatever happens, don't let that woman get the pendant.””
I looked down at the silver heart in my palm.
“Why?””
“Because it contains the original key to your father's records.””
Ricardo turned toward her.
“What records?””
Sarah shook her head.
“Not here.””
A loud crash interrupted her.
The front doors burst open.
Three armed men entered.
Behind them stood a woman in a cream-colored blouse.
My mother.
She looked older than I remembered, but there was no mistaking her.
Her hair was streaked with silver. Her face was thinner. Yet she walked with the same confidence I remembered from childhood.
“Clara,” she said.
My throat tightened.
“Mom?””
She smiled sadly.
“You've grown up.””
I stepped out from behind Ricardo.
“Where have you been?””
Her eyes moved over my face.
“Surviving.””
“You let me believe you were dead!””
“I had no choice.””
“You had eighteen years!””
Her expression hardened.
“You don't understand what your father did.””
Ricardo raised his gun.
“Put your hands where I can see them.””
My mother glanced at him.
“Still playing king, Ricardo?””
He didn't lower his weapon.
“You kidnapped my son.””
“I protected him.””
“From whom?””
She looked directly at me.
“From the man standing beside you.””
I turned toward Ricardo.
He remained motionless.
My mother continued.
“Your father built an empire on lies. He stole children, changed identities, and used blood relationships to control the people around him.””
Ricardo's jaw tightened.
“My father is dead.””
“Is he?””
The question made the room go silent.
She reached into her handbag and removed a photograph.
It showed an older man sitting in a hospital bed.
His hair was white. His face was thin. But the eyes were unmistakable.
Ricardo's father.
“That's impossible,” Ricardo whispered.
My mother placed the photograph on a nearby table.
“Your father survived the explosion that supposedly killed him. He spent years recovering in a private facility under another name.””
Ricardo shook his head.
“I buried him.””
“You buried a stranger.””
Sarah began crying.
“Mother, stop.””
My mother turned toward her.
“You knew what would happen if the truth came out.””
Sarah lowered her eyes.
I looked between them.
“Why did you fake your death, Sarah?””
She took a shaky breath.
“Because I discovered that Leo's DNA had been altered in the hospital records. Antonio was his biological father, but someone had arranged for Ricardo to be listed as the father.””
Ricardo stared at her.
“Who?””
Sarah looked toward our mother.
“She arranged it.””
My mother's expression didn't change.
“I did what I had to do.””
“You used my son!”” Ricardo shouted.
“I gave him a chance to inherit the family without becoming another monster like you.””
Ricardo stepped forward.
“You don't get to decide what happens to my child.””
My mother smiled faintly.
“Then perhaps you should ask why your brother wanted him in the first place.””
Antonio suddenly appeared at the top of the staircase.
His hands were free.
He held a gun.
“Because Leo isn't just my son,” he said.
Ricardo spun around.
“Who released you?””
Antonio smiled.
“Your guards are loyal to whoever pays them.””
He pointed his weapon toward my mother.
“Give me the key.””
My mother laughed.
“You still think you can control this family?””
Antonio fired.
The bullet struck her shoulder.
She collapsed against the table.
I screamed and rushed toward her.
Ricardo fired twice.
Antonio ducked behind a pillar.
Sarah grabbed my arm.
“Clara, the pendant!””
I looked down.
The silver heart had fallen from my hand.
Antonio saw it.
He lunged.
But Ricardo reached it first.
He picked up the pendant and stared at the tiny compartment inside.
There was another folded paper hidden beneath the brass key.
He opened it.
His expression changed completely.
“What is it?”” I asked.
He didn't answer.
He read the paper again.
Then he looked at my mother.
“You knew?””
She pressed a hand against her bleeding shoulder.
“Yes.””
Ricardo's voice trembled.
“Leo isn't my biological son. Antonio is his father. But the document says something else.””
He handed me the paper.
It was an old legal declaration, signed by Ricardo's father.
*THE TRUE HEIR OF THE MORETTI FAMILY SHALL BE THE FIRSTBORN CHILD OF THE BLOODLINE, REGARDLESS OF PATERNITY, PROVIDED THE CHILD IS RECOGNIZED BY THE FAMILY MATRIARCH.*
Beneath it was a handwritten note.
The firstborn child was never Antonio's.
I looked at Sarah.
Then at Ricardo.
“What does that mean?””
My mother closed her eyes.
“It means Leo isn't the firstborn.””
Antonio stepped out from behind the pillar, smiling.
“Now we're getting somewhere.””
Ricardo raised his weapon.
“Where is the firstborn?””
Antonio looked directly at me.
Then he laughed.
“Clara, have you ever wondered why your father adopted you instead of telling you the truth?””
My blood turned cold.
He pointed at the pendant.
“Because you weren't adopted to protect you.””
He paused.
“You were hidden because you're the firstborn child of Ricardo's father.””
The room spun.
Ricardo stared at me.
My mother whispered through clenched teeth.
“Clara, don't believe him.””
But Antonio was already smiling.
“Ask your mother who gave birth to you.””
My mother looked at me.
And for the first time in my life, she couldn't meet my eyes.

Then she whispered six words that destroyed everything I thought I knew.
“Your father was never Daniel Vance.””
