Chapter 2: The Secret Behind the Family Portrait
Ricardo's mansion looked more like a fortress than a home.
Iron gates opened only after three security checks. Armed men stood beneath the stone archways, and cameras followed our car all the way to the entrance.
Leo had fallen asleep against my shoulder.
Ricardo watched him through the rearview mirror.
“He hasn't slept peacefully in months,” he said.
“Children know when something is wrong, even when adults pretend everything is fine.””
Ricardo's eyes moved toward me.
“You speak as if you know my family.””
“I know my sister.””
He looked away.
“Apparently, neither of us knows her as well as we thought.””
Inside, a housekeeper hurried toward us.
“Mr. Moretti, we've prepared Leo's room.””
Ricardo shook his head.
“Not tonight. He's staying with me.””
The woman looked surprised.
For fourteen months, Ricardo had reportedly refused to sleep in the same room as his son because Leo's crying reminded him too much of Sarah.
Now he carried the little boy upstairs himself.
I followed.
Leo stirred when Ricardo placed him on the enormous bed.
“Daddy?””
“I'm here, champ.””
“Mommy coming?””
Ricardo froze.
I gently touched the boy's hair.
“Let's get some sleep, sweetheart.””
Leo looked at his father.
“Mommy said you have a secret.””
Ricardo's face tightened.
“What secret?””
Leo yawned.
“She said Daddy has a different baby picture.””
I exchanged a glance with Ricardo.
“Different baby picture?”” I asked.
Leo nodded sleepily.
“Mommy showed me.””
“Where?””
“In the blue box.””
Then he closed his eyes.
Ricardo stood motionless beside the bed.
“What blue box?”” I whispered.
He looked toward the hallway.
“My wife's bedroom.””
We walked into a room that had remained untouched since Sarah's supposed death.
Her perfume still sat on the dressing table. A silk scarf hung over the back of a chair. On the nightstand was a framed wedding photograph.
I approached it.
Sarah was smiling, her hand resting on Ricardo's chest.
She looked happy.
Too happy for someone who had supposedly spent her life trapped in a dangerous marriage.
“Did you love her?”” I asked.
Ricardo stared at the photograph.
“More than anything.””
“Then why did she disappear?””
“I don't know.””
“Did you hurt her?””
His eyes snapped toward me.
“No.””
I held his gaze.
“I'm not asking because you're a mafia boss. I'm asking because you're my sister's husband.””
He looked down.
“I never touched her in anger. But I controlled everything. Where she went.
Who she spoke to. What she knew about my business.””
“That isn't love, Ricardo.””
His expression hardened.
“Perhaps not. But I thought I was protecting her.””
He opened a wardrobe and removed a small blue velvet box from the top shelf.
Inside were several photographs, an old hospital bracelet, and a folded piece of paper.
Ricardo picked up the first photograph.
It showed him holding a newborn baby.
The date on the back was fourteen months before Sarah's supposed death.
I leaned closer.
“That's Leo?””
Ricardo nodded.
Then I noticed something strange.
The hospital bracelet had a different name printed on it.
*BABY BOY — DANIEL VANCE.*
My knees nearly buckled.
“Vance?””
Ricardo turned the bracelet over.
There was a handwritten note beneath it.
If anything happens to me, Clara deserves to know the truth.
My hands began trembling.
“Daniel Vance was my father's name.””
Ricardo stared at me.
“What?””
“My father died before Sarah disappeared. But he had a son from another relationship. We were told the baby died shortly after birth.””
Ricardo looked at the photograph again.
“Are you saying Leo might be connected to your family?””
“I don't know.””
I unfolded the paper.
Sarah's handwriting was unmistakable.
Clara, if you're reading this, Ricardo has probably discovered the truth. Don't believe the hospital records. Don't believe the DNA results. And whatever happens, never let Antonio take Leo to the basement.
I read the last sentence twice.
“Why the basement?”” Ricardo asked.
I shook my head.
“I don't know.””
He immediately pulled out his phone.
“Dante. Tell me what's in the basement.””
The response came after a pause.
“Nothing unusual, boss. Storage rooms, old files, the wine cellar.””
“Who has access?””
“Only you, Antonio, and Marco.””
Ricardo's eyes narrowed.
“Marco's already disarmed.””
There was silence.
Then Dante said something that made Ricardo's face change.
“Boss, there's one more thing.””
“What?””
“Someone entered the basement twenty minutes ago.””
Ricardo glanced at his watch.
“Who?””
Dante lowered his voice.
“The system identifies the person as Sarah Moretti.””
A cold silence filled the bedroom.
Ricardo grabbed his gun.
“Stay with Leo.””
But I caught his arm.
“I'm coming.””
“No.””
“Your security system says my sister is downstairs. If you want answers, you need me.””
He studied my face, then nodded.
We stepped into the corridor.
At the far end, the elevator doors opened.
A woman stood inside.
Black coat. Dark hair. Silver heart-shaped necklace.
My necklace.
She lifted her eyes.
And I heard the voice I had spent fourteen months praying to hear.
“Clara?””
My knees almost gave way.
“Sarah?””
She stepped forward.
But before I could reach her, she looked past me at Ricardo.
“Get Leo out of this house,” she whispered.
Then the lights went out.
May you like
A gunshot exploded somewhere below us.
And Sarah screamed.
