Chapter 3: The Basement Door
Emergency lights flickered on, bathing the hallway in red.
Ricardo grabbed my wrist and pulled me behind a marble pillar.
“Stay down!””
“Sarah!””
I tried to run toward the elevator, but he held me back.
“Clara, listen to me. Someone is shooting inside my house.””
“That's my sister!””
“And if you run toward those bullets, you'll be dead before you reach her.””
A second gunshot echoed from downstairs.
Then came the sound of breaking glass.
Ricardo spoke into his radio.
“Dante, report!””
Static.
“Dante!””
Nothing.
He turned to two guards rushing down the hallway.
“Secure my son's room. Nobody gets within ten feet of that door.””
One guard nodded.
The other looked strangely nervous.
Ricardo noticed.
“What's your name?””
“Ethan, sir.””
“Where's your partner?””
“Checking the west corridor.””
Ricardo raised his gun.
“That's not what I asked.””
The guard suddenly reached inside his jacket.
Ricardo fired first.
The man collapsed against the wall, his weapon clattering across the floor.
I screamed.
Ricardo stepped over him.
“Now you understand why I told you to stay behind me?””
I couldn't answer.
We hurried toward the staircase.
Halfway down, we found Sarah's silver bracelet lying on the floor.
I picked it up.
There was blood on the clasp.
“She's hurt,” I whispered.
Ricardo examined the blood.
“Not enough to tell.””
A door slammed somewhere below.
Then a man's voice called out.
“Boss! Don't come down!””
Ricardo recognized it.
“Marco?””
No answer.
He moved toward the basement entrance.
I grabbed his sleeve.
“Wait.””
“What?””
“Sarah's note said never to let Antonio take Leo to the basement. She didn't say anything about you.””
Ricardo stared at me.
“You think there's something down there?””
“I think she knew you'd eventually come looking.””
He studied the heavy steel door.
A keypad glowed beside the handle.
“Only three people know the access code,” he said.
“You, Antonio, and Marco.””
He entered the code.
The door clicked open.
A narrow staircase descended into darkness.
At the bottom, we found Marco sitting against the wall, clutching his shoulder.
His shirt was soaked with blood.
Ricardo crouched beside him.
“Where's Sarah?””
Marco coughed.
“She went inside.””
“Inside where?””
Marco pointed toward a second steel door.
“Your father's old room.””
Ricardo's face changed.
“My father never had a room down here.””
Marco laughed weakly.
“That's what you were told.””
I looked at Ricardo.
“Your father?””
He stood.
“My father died when I was twelve. He ran this organization before me.””
Marco grabbed his arm.
“Boss, you need to know something. Antonio didn't help Sarah fake her death because he loved her.””
Ricardo's expression turned cold.
“Then why?””
“Because they found something in your father's records.””
“What?””
Marco looked at me.
Then he whispered:
“Your parents were not killed in an accident, Clara.””
The air seemed to disappear from my lungs.
“What did you say?””
“Your father worked for the Moretti family. He discovered a secret your mother was hiding. Before he could expose it, Antonio arranged the accident.””
Ricardo stepped closer.
“My brother was barely eighteen.””
“He didn't act alone.””
Marco looked directly at Ricardo.
“Your father ordered it.””
Ricardo went completely still.
For a moment, the only sound was the distant hum of the ventilation system.
Then he turned toward the steel door.
“Open it.””
Marco shook his head.
“I can't.””
“Why?””
“Because there's a second lock.””
“Where's the key?””
Marco pointed toward the floor.
A small silver heart pendant lay beside the wall.
I recognized it immediately.
It was identical to mine.
I took my necklace off and compared the two pieces.
They fit together perfectly.
A tiny seam appeared between them.
I pressed the edges.
A hidden compartment opened.
Inside was a small brass key and a folded photograph.
The photograph showed my mother holding a newborn baby.
Beside her stood a much younger Ricardo's father.
On the back, someone had written:
Two daughters. One son. Three families destroyed to keep them apart.
I stared at the words.
“Two daughters?””
Marco looked at me.
“Sarah and you.””
I shook my head.
“That's impossible. We have the same mother and father.””
“Not according to the records in that room.””
Ricardo took the photograph.
“Where's Antonio?””
Marco closed his eyes.
“He's waiting inside.””
Ricardo inserted the key into the second lock.
The door opened slowly.
A dimly lit room appeared beyond it, filled with filing cabinets, old photographs, and medical records.
At the center stood Antonio.
He was holding a gun.
And beside him was Sarah, with her hands tied behind her back.
“Ricardo,” Antonio said calmly.
“You're finally here.””
Ricardo raised his weapon.
“Let my wife go.””
Antonio smiled.
“Your wife?””
He pressed the gun against Sarah's temple.
“That's the problem, brother. You've spent fourteen months mourning the wrong woman.””
Sarah looked at me.
Tears filled her eyes.
“Clara, don't let him tell you what happened.””
Antonio tightened his grip.
“Shut up.””
Then he looked at Ricardo.
“There's something you should know about Leo.””
Ricardo's jaw tightened.
“Say it.””
Antonio smiled wider.
“Leo isn't your biological son.””
Ricardo didn't move.
But Sarah suddenly screamed.
“That's a lie! Antonio, you promised you wouldn't tell him until—”
Antonio struck her across the face.
I lunged forward.
Ricardo caught my arm.
May you like
And then Antonio revealed the final piece of the nightmare.
“Leo isn't your son because he's mine.””
