Chapter 9: The Room Beneath the Lodge

Richard had spent his entire life chasing problems before they became disasters.

Business threats.

Financial collapses.

Legal battles.

He had always been the man who saw danger coming.

But nothing prepared him for the feeling of seeing an empty space where his grandson had been.

“Noah!””

His voice echoed through the lodge.

Everyone moved at once.

Elena ran toward the stairs.

“My baby!””

Richard followed.

His heart was pounding.

Not because of fear for himself.

Because he knew what happened when children were ignored.

They learned to disappear quietly.

The lodge staff searched every hallway.

The kitchen.

The bedrooms.

The terrace.

Nothing.

Then Richard noticed something.

The second airplane was gone.

He stopped.

“Thomas.””

The older man looked at him.

“What?””

“The airplane.””

Thomas checked the table.

His face changed.

“It was here.””

Richard looked toward the basement door.

The door was slightly open.

But nobody had touched it.

“Downstairs.””

They rushed toward it.

Mark followed.

Richard turned.

“You stay here.””

Mark stopped.

“Dad, I need to help.””

Richard stared at him.

“You lost that privilege.””

The basement was dark.

The old wooden stairs creaked beneath their feet.

Elena called Noah’s name over and over.

Then they heard something.

A small voice.

Not crying.

Whispering.

“Mommy?””

Elena froze.

She ran toward the sound.

At the back of the basement was a hidden door.

Thomas stared.

“I didn’t know that was there.””

Richard pushed it open.

Inside was a small room.

Old.

Dusty.

Filled with boxes.

And sitting in the corner was Noah.

Holding both wooden airplanes.

Elena rushed to him.

“Oh my God.””

She hugged him.

Noah buried his face against her.

“I was looking for the other pictures.””

Richard knelt.

“What pictures?””

Noah pointed toward a box.

“The ones Grandma hid.””

Richard looked at the box.

“Your great-grandmother?””

Noah nodded.

“She told me to keep them safe.””

Everyone froze.

Richard opened the box.

Inside were photographs.

Documents.

Letters.

And one old recording device.

Thomas picked it up.

“Your mother’s?””

Richard nodded.

They pressed play.

Static filled the room.

Then an old woman’s voice appeared.

Richard recognized it immediately.

His mother.

“If you are hearing this, then I am probably gone.””

Richard closed his eyes.

His mother had been dead for years.

But her voice filled the hidden room.

“I need my son to know the truth.””

Everyone listened.

“Mark is not the person he appears to be.””

Mark, standing outside the doorway, went completely still.

Richard continued listening.

“My grandson Noah is the rightful heir to the Bellacorte legacy. But there is another secret.””

The recording crackled.

“A secret Mark will do anything to hide.””

Richard looked at Thomas.

“What secret?””

The recording continued.

“I discovered that Noah’s biological father is…”

The sound distorted.

Everyone leaned closer.

Then the recording cut out.

Silence.

Richard looked at the machine.

“No.””

Thomas checked it.

“The battery is dead.””

Richard stared at him.

“No.””

He looked at the box.

There had to be another copy.

Another clue.

Then Noah pointed.

“Grandpa.””

Richard turned.

The child was holding a photograph.

A photograph hidden beneath the papers.

Noah handed it to him.

Richard looked down.

And his entire world stopped.

Because the man standing beside Elena in the picture wasn’t Mark.

It was someone else.

Someone Richard knew.

Someone who had been part of the Bellacorte family for decades.

And written on the back of the photograph were the words:

“The truth about Noah’s father.””

Richard flipped the picture over.

And read the name.

May you like

His own brother.

The man everyone believed had died twenty years earlier.
