Chapter 13: The Choice No One Expected
Everyone in the room stared at Noah.
The lawyer.
Richard.
Elena.
Alexander.
Even Mark.
Nobody spoke.
Because for the first time in years, the entire Bellacorte family was waiting for a child’s decision.
Not a board.
Not a judge.
Not a billionaire.
A three-year-old boy.
The lawyer lowered the document.
“Maybe we should give him time.””
Richard nodded immediately.
“Yes.””
He looked at Noah.
“There is no pressure, buddy.””
Noah stood quietly.
His small hand held the wooden airplane.
The one he had carved with his own fingers.
The one that had carried a secret through all the lies.
Richard knelt.
“You don’t have to choose because anyone tells you to.””
Noah looked at him.
“You’re not mad?””
Richard frowned.
“Mad?””
Noah looked down.
“Because Mommy said I caused problems.””
Elena covered her mouth.
Richard felt his heart break.
He reached out.
“You never caused problems.””
Noah looked confused.
“But everyone was fighting because of me.””
Richard shook his head.
“No.””
He pointed gently toward the adults.
“Adults make their own choices.””
Noah looked around the room.
Then he walked toward Mark.
Everyone tensed.
Richard stood slowly.
He was ready.
If Mark tried anything, he would stop him.
But Noah didn’t move away from his father.
He stopped in front of him.
Mark looked down.
For the first time, he looked ashamed.
“Noah…”
The child held up the wooden airplane.
“Daddy.””
Mark’s eyes filled.
“I’m sorry.””
Nobody expected those words.
Not from Noah.
Not after everything.
Mark slowly knelt.
“You don’t have to forgive me.””
Noah stared at him.
“I wanted you to play with me.””
Mark closed his eyes.
That simple sentence hurt more than any accusation.
“I know.””
“You never did.””
A tear fell from Mark’s face.
“I know.””
Noah looked at the airplane.
“I made this for Grandpa.””
Mark nodded.
“I know.””
“Because Grandpa listens.””
The words were quiet.
But they destroyed Mark.
Because he knew they were true.
Richard watched his son.
A part of him still wanted to save Mark.
A father always wants to save his child.
But another part knew something important.
Saving someone from consequences was not the same as saving them.
Noah turned away.
Then walked toward Elena.
She immediately knelt.
He hugged her.
“My mommy.””
Elena broke down.
“Yes.””
“I remember your voice.””
She held him tightly.
“I remembered yours every day.””
The room became silent.
Then Noah looked toward Alexander.
The man who had been standing in the shadows for years.
The man who had lost everything.
Noah studied him.
“Are you my daddy?””
Alexander swallowed.
“Yes.””
Noah looked at him.
“Did you leave me?””
The question was simple.
But it carried years of pain.
Alexander’s face broke.
“No.””
He shook his head.
“I never wanted to leave you.””
“Then why?””
Alexander looked at Richard.
At Elena.
At everyone.
“Because I thought staying away would keep you safe.””
Noah thought about it.
Then asked:
“Are you going to stay now?””
Alexander dropped to his knees.
“If you want me.””
Noah looked at Elena.
Then Richard.
Then back at Alexander.
“I want my family.””
Those four words changed everything.
The lawyer cleared his throat.
“Then, Noah, who do you choose as your legal guardian?””
The room became silent again.
Noah looked at the adults.
Then pointed.
Not at Richard.
Not at Elena.
Not at Alexander.
At all three.
“I choose all of them.””
Everyone froze.
The lawyer blinked.
“That may not be legally possible.””
Noah frowned.
“But they’re my family.””
Richard felt tears reach his eyes.
The lawyer looked at the documents.
Then nodded slowly.
“There is a provision.””
Everyone looked at him.
“The trust allows a family guardianship arrangement if all approved parties agree.””
Richard looked at Elena and Alexander.
They both nodded.
Then he looked at Mark.
Mark stood alone.
Richard expected anger.
Instead, he saw something else.
Regret.
The lawyer turned another page.
“There is one final matter.””
Richard looked at him.
“What?””
The lawyer hesitated.
“The trust states that any person who intentionally harmed the heir loses all claims to the Bellacorte estate.””
Everyone looked at Mark.
The lawyer continued.
“Mr. Mark Bellacorte will receive no inheritance.””
Mark closed his eyes.
Richard waited for him to argue.
To fight.
To blame someone else.
But he didn’t.
He simply whispered:
May you like
“I deserve that.””
And for the first time in years, Richard believed him.
