Chapter 5: The Mother Who Was Never Gone
Richard couldn’t speak.
The entire room disappeared around him.
The fire.
The furniture.
The people standing nearby.
Everything became distant.
Because one sentence had destroyed three years of grief.
The woman your son told everyone was dead.
Richard gripped the phone.
“Who are you?””
The woman breathed in shakily.
“My name is Elena.””
Mark immediately reacted.
“No.””
It was quiet.
Almost a whisper.
But Richard heard it.
And so did everyone else.
Mark knew that name.
Richard slowly turned toward him.
“You know her.””
Mark’s face lost all color.
“Dad, hang up.””
Richard ignored him.
The woman on the phone heard.
“Is Mark there?””
Richard said nothing.
The silence answered for him.
Elena’s voice cracked.
“I knew it.””
Richard walked away from everyone.
He needed distance.
He needed control.
“When did you write this letter?””
“Three years ago.””
“Why didn’t I receive it?””
A long pause.
“Because I never had a chance to send it.””
Richard looked at the envelope.
“What happened?””
“I was attacked.””
The room seemed to freeze.
“Attacked?””
“Yes.””
Elena’s voice shook.
“I was leaving with Noah. I had copies of the documents. Proof that Mark and Claudia were stealing from the Bellacorte foundation.””
Richard looked toward Mark.
His son stood motionless.
“I was told you hated me,” Elena continued.
“I was told you believed I abandoned Noah.””
Richard closed his eyes.
Those words were exactly what Mark had told him.
Every single one.
“I thought I lost everything,” Elena whispered.
Richard lowered his voice.
“Where have you been?””
“I was in a rehabilitation center.””
“Why didn’t you contact me?””
“Because every time I tried, someone stopped me.””
Richard looked at Mark.
Not as a father.
As a stranger.
“Who?””
Elena hesitated.
“Your son.””
Mark stepped forward.
“Dad, don’t listen to her.””
Richard covered the phone.
“Stay where you are.””
Mark stopped.
The authority in Richard’s voice was different now.
Because Richard wasn’t protecting his son anymore.
He was protecting Noah.
Elena continued.
“I escaped two weeks ago. I tried finding you. But then I saw something online.””
“What?””
“A picture from Richard Bellacorte’s birthday dinner.””
Richard looked toward Noah.
The child sitting near the fireplace.
The child wearing clothes that were too small.
The child who had made a toy airplane.
“She saw the picture?”” Richard asked.
“Yes.””
Elena started crying.
“I saw my son.””
Richard’s heart tightened.
“She didn’t know where you were,” Elena whispered.
“No.””
Richard looked at Noah.
“She’s been here the whole time.””
A horrible silence followed.
Because everyone understood.
The mother wasn’t gone.
She had been searching.
And the child had been waiting.
Richard walked back into the room.
Mark immediately approached.
“Dad, she’s lying.””
Richard stared at him.
“You said she abandoned Noah.””
“She did.””
“You said she was unstable.””
“She was.””
“You said she was dead.””
Mark went silent.
That was the first time he couldn’t defend himself.
Claudia stepped in.
“Richard, think carefully. This woman is manipulating you.””
Richard looked at her.
“You threw my grandson into the snow.””
Claudia’s face tightened.
“That was discipline.””
Richard shook his head.
“No.””
He pointed at the airplane.
“This was a warning.””
Noah suddenly spoke.
Very softly.
“Grandpa?””
Richard turned.
“Yes?””
“Is Mommy coming home?””
The question destroyed him.
Because he realized Noah wasn’t asking about a stranger.
He was asking about someone he had been missing his entire life.
Richard walked over and hugged him.
“Yes.””
His voice trembled.
“I think she is.””
Mark stepped back.
“No.””
Richard looked at him.
“Why are you afraid?””
Mark didn’t answer.
Richard moved closer.
“What did you do?””
Mark’s face changed.
For the first time, Richard saw something beneath the arrogance.
Fear.
Real fear.
Then the front door of the lodge opened.
Everyone turned.
A woman stood there.
She looked exhausted.
Older than Richard remembered.
But unmistakable.
Noah immediately froze.
The woman looked at him.
And tears filled her eyes.
“My baby…”
Noah stared.
He didn’t move.
Richard watched as the woman slowly stepped inside.
“Elena,” he whispered.
She looked at him.
“I told you I wasn’t gone.””
Then she looked at Mark.
And her expression changed.
Because she wasn’t afraid anymore.
She reached into her bag.
Pulled out a folder.

And said:
“I brought the rest of the evidence.””
