Chapter 3: The Woman Behind The Lie
I left my wedding before the vows were finished.
For the first time in my life, I walked away from a room filled with powerful people, millions of dollars in decorations, and a future everyone else had already planned for me.
Because a six-year-old girl was waiting for me.
And she called me Daddy.
My driver rushed us to St. Mary’s Hospital.
Lily sat beside me in the back seat, holding baby Emma carefully.
She was exhausted.
Her tiny hand never left her sister’s blanket.
“You’re a good big sister,” I said quietly.
She looked down.
“Mommy said I had to take care of Emma.””
The words hurt more than she knew.
“No child should have to do that alone.””
She looked at me.
“But I wasn’t alone.””
Her eyes filled with tears.
“I had to find you.””
I looked out the window.
The city lights blurred.
For five years, I had convinced myself Elena left because she didn’t love me.
But what if I was wrong?
What if someone had taken her away?
When we reached the hospital, Lily grabbed my hand.
“Don’t disappear again.””
The sentence almost broke me.
“I won’t.””
I didn’t know if I deserved to make that promise.
But I made it anyway.
Inside the hospital room, I saw her.
Elena.
She looked smaller than I remembered.
Pale.
Tired.
But when her eyes opened and found mine, every memory came rushing back.
“Adrian…”
Her voice was barely a whisper.
I stood frozen.
After all these years, after all the anger and questions, the only thing I could say was:
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
Tears filled her eyes.
“I tried.””
I stepped closer.
“Then why didn’t I know about my daughters?””
She closed her eyes.
“Because someone made sure you never found out.””
Behind me, Lily walked into the room.
“Mommy…”
Elena immediately smiled.
“My brave girl.””
Then she looked at Emma.
“She brought her sister all the way there?””
I nodded.
“She walked into my wedding.””
A weak smile appeared on Elena’s face.
“She always was stubborn.””
For a moment, everything felt almost normal.
Then I saw the fear return to her eyes.
“Adrian, you have to listen carefully.””
I sat beside her.
“What happened?””
She reached for my hand.
“Five years ago, when I was pregnant, I was going to tell you.””
“Then why didn’t you?””
Her fingers tightened around mine.
“Because Victoria found out first.””
The room became silent.
My chest tightened.
“What did she do?””
Elena looked toward Lily.
Then toward the door.
Like she was afraid someone was listening.
“She threatened me.””
My blood ran cold.
“She told me if I contacted you, she would destroy everything you built.””
“That doesn’t make sense.””
Elena’s eyes filled with pain.
“She knew about your company. She knew about your family. She knew exactly where to hurt you.””
I stood up.
“She couldn’t do that alone.””
Elena looked at me.
“No.””
Her voice trembled.
“She had help.””
A knock suddenly came from the hospital door.
Nobody answered.
The handle slowly turned.
Lily immediately grabbed my arm.
“Daddy…”
The door opened.
And the person standing outside was someone I never expected to see.
Someone who had been beside me through every business deal.
Every victory.
Every failure.
My closest friend.
The man who had always told me to forget Elena.

He stepped into the room and said:
“Adrian, you need to leave now… because Victoria knows you’re here.””
