Chapter 13: The Woman Who Was Supposed To Be Dead

For fifteen years, I believed my mother was gone.

I remembered the funeral.

The flowers.

The black suits.

The endless line of people telling me how strong I had to be.

I remembered my father standing beside me, his hand on my shoulder, telling me that life was cruel but we had to move forward.

I believed him.

I built my entire life around that belief.

And now, a voice from my past was telling me everything I knew was a lie.

“Mom?””

The word barely escaped my mouth.

Nobody in the room moved.

Lily looked up at me.

“Daddy?””

I couldn’t answer.

Because my mind was fighting against my ears.

The woman on the phone took a shaky breath.

“Yes, Adrian.””

My knees weakened.

“Where are you?””

A long silence followed.

Then she said:

“Somewhere your father could never find me.””

I looked at the recording device on the table.

At the letter in my hand.

At the people who had lied to me for years.

“What happened?””

My mother’s voice became softer.

“I tried to tell you.””

“No.””

My voice hardened.

“Everyone says that.””

I looked at Victoria.

At Ethan.

At my father’s old documents.

“Everyone says they tried.””

Silence.

Then my mother whispered:

“I deserved that.””

The honesty surprised me.

“Why did you leave me?””

Her breathing changed.

Like she had been waiting fifteen years for that question.

“Because your father was afraid.””

“Afraid of what?””

“Of the truth coming out.””

I closed my eyes.

“Tell me everything.””

My mother was quiet for several seconds.

Then she began.

“Your father wasn’t the person you thought he was.””

I almost laughed.

After everything I had discovered, that statement barely shocked me.

“He made mistakes,” she continued.

“But he wasn’t the only one.””

“Who else?””

A pause.

Then:

“Your grandfather.””

I frowned.

“My grandfather?””

“Yes.””

The room went silent.

My mother explained that years ago, before my father took control of Cole International, my grandfather had built a hidden network of illegal financial deals.

My father inherited the company.

And the secrets.

He spent years trying to bury them.

But my mother discovered the truth.

“She wanted to expose everything,” Richard said quietly.

I looked at him.

“You knew?””

He looked ashamed.

“I knew pieces.””

“Everyone knew pieces.””

My voice cracked.

“But nobody knew my life was being destroyed.””

My mother continued.

“When I found the documents, I told your father I would reveal everything.””

“What did he do?””

“He begged me not to.””

I swallowed.

“And then?””

“He created the story that I died.””

The room became completely silent.

“He thought if the world believed I was gone, the people chasing the truth would stop looking.””

I felt anger rising.

“You left me.””

The words came out colder than I intended.

But they were real.

“I know.””

Her voice broke.

“I thought I was protecting you.””

I looked at Lily.

That sentence again.

Everyone who hurt someone I loved had used the same excuse.

“You left me alone.””

“I know.””

“You let me believe you were dead.””

“I know.””

The pain in her voice almost made me stop.

Almost.

Then Lily stepped closer.

“Daddy.””

I looked down.

She was holding the letter.

“She sounds sorry.””

The simplicity of a child’s understanding hurt more than any argument.

My mother heard her.

“Is that Lily?””

I froze.

“How do you know her name?””

A pause.

Then:

“Because I know everything.””

My blood ran cold.

“What does that mean?””

My mother’s voice became urgent.

“Adrian, listen carefully.””

I straightened.

“There is still someone trying to erase the evidence.””

“Who?””

“I don’t know.””

“That’s not good enough.””

My anger returned.

My mother whispered:

“It’s someone who has been close to you your entire life.””

Everyone looked at each other.

The same warning.

The same mystery.

The same shadow.

Then my mother said:

“Look at the person standing closest to you right now.””

The call ended.

Slowly, I lowered the phone.

Everyone stared.

Then Lily looked behind me.

“Daddy…”

Her voice changed.

She was looking at someone.

I turned.

And my heart stopped.

Because the person standing closest to me wasn’t Ethan.

It wasn’t Richard.

May you like

It wasn’t Victoria.

It was my father.
