Chapter 11: The Daughter Who Held The Evidence

The first thing I did was call Elena.

The second thing I did was find Lily.

I didn’t care about secrets anymore.

Not the company.

Not my father.

Not the stolen money.

Not the people who betrayed me.

Only my daughter.

“Ethan,” I said slowly.

“Tell me where she is.””

He didn’t move.

For the first time, I saw something in his face.

Fear.

Not fear of me.

Fear of someone else.

“You don’t understand what you’re walking into.””

I grabbed his jacket.

“You took my daughter. You lost the right to warn me.””

His eyes filled with shame.

“I never wanted to hurt her.””

“Then why?””

He looked toward the photographs.

“Because I was trying to stop something worse.””

I pushed him away.

“You expect me to believe that?””

“No.””

His voice cracked.

“I expect you to hate me.””

A strange silence followed.

Because he wasn’t defending himself.

He wasn’t pretending.

He knew what he had done.

“Where is Lily?””

Ethan reached into his pocket and pulled out a phone.

“She has been calling this number.””

I looked at the screen.

The number belonged to a private line.

One connected to an old company account.

My father’s account.

“What is this?””

Ethan looked at me.

“A dead man’s secret.””

Before I could ask, the phone rang.

Everyone froze.

The screen showed one word.

LILY.

I answered immediately.

“Lily?””

A small voice came through.

“Daddy?””

My knees almost gave out.

“Where are you?””

“I’m okay.””

Her voice was shaking.

“Daddy, I found something.””

I closed my eyes.

Of course she did.

Because somehow, my six-year-old daughter had uncovered more truth than all the adults around her.

“What did you find?””

“A box.””

“Where?””

“Where Grandpa kept his things.””

I looked at Ethan.

He looked away.

“Lily, are you alone?””

“No.””

My heart stopped.

“Who is with you?””

A pause.

Then a voice answered.

A woman’s voice.

“Me.””

I froze.

Victoria.

“What are you doing with my daughter?””

Victoria sounded different.

Not angry.

Not arrogant.

Broken.

“I’m trying to fix what I did.””

I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.

“You kidnapped my child.””

“No.””

Her voice became emotional.

“I brought her somewhere safe.””

“Safe?””

I laughed bitterly.

“You don’t get to use that word.””

Silence.

Then she said:

“You need to listen to me.””

I didn’t answer.

“The person you think betrayed you isn’t the biggest threat.””

I looked at Ethan.

“What are you talking about?””

Victoria continued.

“Your father’s records were incomplete.””

“What?””

“There was someone else involved.””

My stomach tightened.

“Who?””

Her voice lowered.

“Your mother.””

The world stopped.

My mother had been dead for fifteen years.

“That’s impossible.””

“I thought so too.””

I heard Lily in the background.

“Daddy, please don’t be angry.””

My heart broke.

“I’m not angry at you, sweetheart.””

“I know.””

Her little voice trembled.

“But everyone keeps fighting because of me.””

“No.””

I swallowed.

“None of this is your fault.””

Victoria spoke again.

“Adrian, there is something you need to see.””

“What?””

“The last recording your father made before he disappeared.””

My grip tightened around the phone.

“You said he was dead.””

“He wanted everyone to believe that.””

“Why?””

A long pause.

Then Victoria whispered:

“Because he was afraid your mother would come back.””

I felt cold.

“My mother is dead.””

“No, Adrian.””

May you like

Victoria’s voice shook.

“That’s what your father wanted you to believe.””
