Chapter 5: The Woman Who Paid for Silence

The next morning, Damon Cross canceled every meeting on his schedule.

His assistants panicked.

His business partners called.

The media started asking questions.

But none of it mattered.

For the first time in years, Damon had something more important than his empire.

His family.

Lily sat at the kitchen table wearing a new dress his assistant had bought overnight.

She looked uncomfortable.

Damon noticed.

"You don't like it?""

She touched the fabric.

"It's too nice.""

He smiled gently.

"Clothes are supposed to make you happy.""

She looked confused.

"Mommy says nice things are not for people like us.""

Those words hurt more than any accusation Elisa had thrown at him.

Damon sat across from her.

"Your mommy was wrong about one thing.""

"What?""

"You are allowed to have nice things.""

Lily smiled.

A small smile.

But it was the first one he had seen.

Sarah watched from the doorway.

For a moment, Damon saw the woman he remembered.

The woman who used to laugh while cooking terrible meals in their first apartment.

The woman who believed love mattered more than money.

Then the memory disappeared.

Because now she looked tired.

Not because of age.

Because of survival.

"I owe you an apology.""

Damon looked at her.

Sarah shook her head.

"No.""

"Yes.""

He stood.

"I spent seven years believing the worst about you.""

Her eyes lowered.

"I disappeared.""

"Because someone forced you to.""

Sarah looked away.

"That doesn't change the fact that you lost seven years with Lily.""

The room went quiet.

Damon had no answer.

Because she was right.

A knock interrupted them.

Damon’s security team appeared at the door.

"Mr. Cross.""

"What happened?""

The guard hesitated.

"There was an incident.""

Damon immediately became alert.

"Where?""

"Outside.""

He walked toward the window.

A black car was parked across the street.

The same car had been there for twenty minutes.

Sarah saw it.

Her face changed.

"No.""

Damon turned.

"You know that car?""

She grabbed Lily’s hand.

"We have to leave.""

"Sarah.""

"Now.""

The fear in her voice stopped him.

He moved quickly.

Within minutes, Damon’s security team moved them to another entrance.

Once they were inside a secure room, Damon looked at Sarah.

"Who was in that car?""

Sarah didn’t answer.

"Sarah.""

She closed her eyes.

"Elisa.""

Damon’s expression darkened.

"She followed us?""

Sarah nodded.

"She always wanted to know where we were.""

"Why?""

Sarah looked at him.

"Because she was afraid I had proof.""

"What proof?""

Sarah hesitated.

Then she reached into her bag.

A small flash drive.

Damon stared.

"What is that?""

"Everything.""

She placed it on the table.

"Messages. Bank records. The hospital documents.""

His eyes narrowed.

"How did you get them?""

"I didn't.""

She looked at Lily.

"Elisa gave me something by accident.""

Damon waited.

"The night she paid me to leave, she was recording herself.""

His eyebrows lifted.

"Why?""

"Because she wanted proof that she had solved the problem.""

Sarah laughed bitterly.

"She didn't realize the recording saved itself.""

Damon picked up the flash drive.

"Why didn't you release it?""

Sarah looked down.

"Because she threatened Lily.""

The answer hit him instantly.

"What did she say?""

Sarah’s voice shook.

"She said if I ever contacted you, she would make sure you lost custody before you even knew Lily existed.""

Damon felt anger rise through him.

"She couldn't do that.""

"I was scared.""

Sarah whispered.

"I had no money. No lawyer. No one.""

Damon looked at the flash drive.

Seven years of evidence.

Seven years of lies.

He turned toward the computer.

"Let's hear it.""

Sarah grabbed his arm.

"Damon.""

He looked at her.

"What?""

She looked terrified.

"The recording doesn't just expose Elisa.""

"Then what does it expose?""

Sarah's lips trembled.

"It exposes why she hated me.""

The screen lit up.

The audio file appeared.

Created seven years earlier.

Damon clicked play.

At first, there was silence.

Then Elisa’s voice.

Cold.

Calm.

Confident.

"Sarah Bennett, you need to understand something.""

Damon stopped breathing.

Because the next voice he heard was his own.

May you like

His own voice.

Saying words he had never spoken.
