Chapter 2: The Secret Written in a Photograph

The garden lights continued glowing, but the charity gala no longer felt like a celebration.

It felt like a courtroom.

Everyone was watching.

Damon stood in the center of the crowd with a seven-year-old photograph in his hand and a little girl holding a plate of cake beside him.

Elisa Rochefort forced a laugh.

"Damon, don't be ridiculous. A child is clearly confused.""

But Damon didn't move.

"You recognized Sarah's name before I did.""

Elisa’s smile faded.

"I recognized nothing.""

"Then why did you try to take the photograph?""

Silence.

The guests exchanged uncomfortable looks.

Elisa looked around for support.

Nobody stepped forward.

Not even the people who had been praising her charity work ten minutes earlier.

Damon crouched beside Lily.

"Sweetheart, what else did your mommy tell you?""

Lily looked nervous.

She glanced at Elisa.

Then she whispered.

"Mommy said I shouldn't talk about the past.""

"Why?""

"Because bad people might find us.""

Damon felt a chill.

He looked at Elisa.

"Who are the bad people, Lily?""

The little girl squeezed the napkin around the cake.

"She said a lady named Elisa gave her money.""

The crowd gasped.

Elisa immediately stepped forward.

"Enough.""

Her voice was no longer sweet.

"You don't know what you're saying.""

Lily’s eyes filled with fear.

Damon noticed.

He stood.

"Don't talk to her like that.""

Elisa stared at him.

"Damon, you are letting a homeless child manipulate you.""

That sentence changed everything.

Damon’s expression hardened.

"A homeless child?""

He looked around the garden.

"Everyone here donated thousands of dollars tonight to help children like her.""

Nobody spoke.

"Yet when one child actually appeared in front of us, we called security.""

His words hit harder than any accusation.

Elisa crossed her arms.

"You don't know the whole story.""

"Then tell me.""

She froze.

Damon stepped closer.

"Tell me why Sarah Bennett vanished seven years ago.""

The color drained from Elisa’s face.

Several guests gasped.

They knew Damon had been engaged once.

They knew his fiancée disappeared.

But nobody knew Sarah’s name.

Elisa lowered her voice.

"This is not the place.""

Damon smiled coldly.

"No. This is exactly the place.""

He turned toward the audience.

"This charity exists because people believe their money can change lives.""

Then he looked back at Elisa.

"So let's find out what happened to one.""

Lily tugged on his sleeve.

"Sir?""

Damon looked down.

"What is it?""

She held out a small envelope.

"Mommy told me to give you this if I ever found you.""

The entire world seemed to stop.

Damon took the envelope carefully.

His name was written on the front.

Damon Alexander Cross.

In Sarah’s handwriting.

The handwriting he recognized instantly.

His fingers trembled as he opened it.

Inside was a hospital document.

He read the first line.

Patient Name: Sarah Bennett.

Then another line.

Child's Name: Lily Bennett.

Date of Birth: Five years ago.

Damon stopped breathing.

His eyes moved lower.

Father's Name:

Damon Alexander Cross.

The paper shook in his hands.

A million questions crashed through his mind.

How?

Why?

Why had Sarah hidden this from him?

Why had she left?

Why had she raised his daughter alone?

He looked at Lily.

The small girl looked back at him with the same green eyes Sarah had.

His eyes.

"Lily...""

His voice broke.

The child tilted her head.

"Yes?""

Damon couldn't say the words.

Not yet.

Because if the document was real, then the biggest lie of his life had just been exposed.

Elisa suddenly grabbed his arm.

"Damon, listen to me.""

He pulled away.

"Did you know?""

She said nothing.

"Did you know Sarah had my child?""

Her silence was an answer.

Damon stepped back.

The woman he trusted most after losing Sarah had been hiding something.

But why?

Lily looked up at him.

"Mommy said something else.""

Damon knelt.

"What?""

Her voice became smaller.

"She said you didn't leave us.""

He stared.

"What?""

Lily looked toward Elisa.

"She said someone made you think she left.""

A cold feeling moved through him.

Damon slowly turned.

"Elisa...""

The woman backed away.

"Damon, don't.""

"Who told Sarah to disappear?""

Elisa said nothing.

Then Damon’s phone rang.

The caller ID appeared.

A number he hadn't seen in seven years.

May you like

Sarah Bennett.

His hands froze.
