Chapter 1: The Cake at Midnight
"GET YOUR FILTHY HANDS OFF THAT CAKE!""
The scream cut through the music like a knife.
Three hundred guests stopped talking at once.
Under the golden lights of the garden at the Rochefort Charity Gala, a little girl stood frozen beside a dessert table covered with crystal plates and towers of expensive pastries. She was barely five years old. Her faded pink dress hung loosely from her tiny shoulders, her hair was messy from the cold night air, and her bare feet rested against the marble floor.
Her small hand was still reaching toward a slice of chocolate cake.
Elisa Rochefort grabbed her wrist.
The wealthy socialite’s diamond bracelet flashed under the lights as she pulled the child away from the table.
"Do you even understand what you just touched?"" Elisa asked coldly.
The little girl’s eyes filled with tears.
"I’m sorry, ma’am.""
Her voice was almost too quiet to hear.
"I just wanted one piece.""
Elisa looked down at her as if she had found dirt on her expensive dress.
"One piece?""
The woman laughed.
"Do you know how much this cake costs? More than your entire family probably earns in a year.""
Several guests looked away.
A few whispered.
Nobody stepped forward.
The gala was supposed to raise money for hungry children across Atlanta. The irony hung in the air, but everyone seemed too afraid to say it.
The little girl lowered her head.
"I haven't eaten today," she whispered.
For a moment, the garden became completely silent.
Then Elisa sighed dramatically.
"Security.""
Two guards near the entrance turned around.
"Remove this child immediately.""
The little girl’s lips trembled.
"Please don't.""
She looked around the crowd.
"I won't touch anything else.""
Nobody moved.
Nobody except the man standing near the stage.
Damon Cross had heard every word.
The thirty-two-year-old billionaire had spent years building his company from nothing after losing his own parents as a teenager. He was known as a ruthless businessman in magazines, but tonight was supposed to be different.
Tonight was supposed to be about helping children.
He walked across the garden.
His black suit stood out among the expensive gowns and tuxedos.
"Let go of her.""
Elisa turned.
Her expression immediately changed.
"Damon.""
She forced a smile.
"Thank goodness you're here. This little beggar somehow slipped inside.""
Damon looked at the child’s red wrist.
Then he looked back at Elisa.
"This event is for hungry children.""
Elisa laughed nervously.
"Of course it is. But we can't allow random people to touch food meant for guests.""
Damon stared at her.
"Guests?""
His voice became colder.
"Did you forget who this charity was created for?""
The crowd became uncomfortable.
Elisa opened her mouth, but Damon had already turned away.
He picked up a plate.
Then he cut the largest slice of cake from the center.
He walked back to the little girl.
Slowly, he lowered himself until they were at the same height.
"What’s your name, sweetheart?""
The girl wiped her cheeks.
"Lily.""
"I'm Damon.""
He handed her the plate.
"This is for you.""
Lily stared at the cake.
Then she looked at him.
"Are you sure?""
"Yes.""
"But I don't have any money.""
Something inside Damon broke at those words.
"You don't need money.""
She carefully accepted the plate.
For several seconds, she simply looked at the cake.
Then she took one tiny bite.
Her eyes widened.
But instead of eating more, she grabbed a napkin and carefully wrapped the rest.
Damon noticed.
"Why aren't you eating it?""
Lily looked down.
"It's for my mommy.""
His expression changed.
"Your mother?""
She nodded.
"She's sick.""
The noise of the party disappeared for Damon.
"Where is your mommy?""
Lily pointed beyond the garden walls.
"Behind the church.""
Damon frowned.
"She sleeps there?""
Lily nodded.
"Sometimes.""
Before Damon could ask another question, Elisa stepped closer.
"Damon, darling, your speech is about to begin.""
He didn't look at her.
"Does your mommy have a name?""
The little girl hugged the cake.
"Sarah Bennett.""
The plate almost slipped from his hand.
Sarah Bennett.
A name he had tried to forget for seven years.
The woman who had once been his entire world.
The woman who disappeared the morning of their wedding.
The woman who left behind a letter saying she needed a new life without him.
Damon’s face went pale.
"Sarah Bennett?""
Lily nodded.
"Yes.""
He swallowed.
"What does she look like?""
The little girl reached into the pocket of her dress.
She pulled out a folded photograph.
"My mommy keeps this because she says she was happy here.""
Damon took it.
The second he unfolded the picture, his hands began shaking.
It was Sarah.
Young.
Smiling.
Standing beside him.
Wearing the blue dress from their engagement party.
A dress he remembered because he had chosen it himself.
His voice disappeared.
"Where did you get this?""
Lily pointed at the photograph.
"Mommy says this man loved her once.""
Damon stared at his own face in the picture.
Then Lily looked up.
"Are you the man who promised to come back?""
Before Damon could answer, Elisa suddenly stepped forward.
"Security!""
Her voice was sharp.
"Take that photograph away.""
Damon slowly turned.
His eyes narrowed.
"Why are you afraid of this picture, Elisa?""
For the first time that night, Elisa looked frightened.
May you like
And Damon realized something.
She knew exactly who Sarah was.
