Chapter 4: The Night Everything Was Stolen
Damon had spent his entire life believing that the worst pain came from losing someone.
He was wrong.
The worst pain came from realizing they had been taken from you.
He sat in the back seat of his car with Lily beside him, staring through the window as Atlanta’s city lights blurred into streaks of gold and white.
The charity gala was behind them.
The lies were not.
Lily held the wrapped piece of cake carefully in her lap.
Damon noticed.
"You still have it?""
She looked down.
"For Mommy.""
His chest tightened.
After everything she had been through, after being humiliated in front of hundreds of strangers, this little girl was still thinking about her mother.
"How long has your mommy been sick?""
Lily looked out the window.
"She gets tired a lot.""
"Does she see a doctor?""
The girl shook her head.
"She says doctors cost too much.""
Damon clenched his jaw.
A billionaire.
Someone who could buy hospitals, build clinics, change thousands of lives.
Yet his own daughter had been sleeping behind a church because he never knew she existed.
"Where is she now?""
"At the church.""
Damon looked at his driver.
"Take us there.""
The driver glanced at him through the mirror.
"Mr. Cross, are you sure?""
Damon's voice was quiet.
"For seven years, I wasn't sure about anything.""
He looked at Lily.
"But I am sure about this.""
The old church sat on a quiet street away from the bright buildings of downtown.
The paint on the walls was peeling.
The front steps were cracked.
A small wooden bench rested beside the entrance.
Lily jumped out of the car immediately.
"Mommy!""
She ran toward the side of the building.
Damon followed quickly.
Then he saw her.
A woman sitting beneath a thin blanket near the back wall.
Sarah.
For a moment, he couldn't move.
The woman he remembered had always looked impossible to forget.
Her bright smile.
Her confident voice.
The way she walked into a room and made everything feel lighter.
The woman in front of him looked different.
Her face was thinner.
Her hair was shorter.
Her hands trembled as she pushed herself up.
But it was still her.
"Damon.""
His name left her lips like a prayer and a warning at the same time.
Lily ran into her arms.
"Mommy! I found him!""
Sarah closed her eyes.
Tears slipped down her cheeks.
"I know.""
Damon stood several feet away.
He wanted to say a thousand things.
Why didn't you call?
Why didn't you fight?
Why did you let me believe you left?
But all he could say was:
"Why didn't you tell me?""
Sarah looked at him.
"I tried.""
"How?""
"Emails. Calls. Letters.""
She swallowed.
"But every message disappeared.""
Damon frowned.
"What do you mean disappeared?""
Sarah looked toward Lily.
"Not here.""
He understood.
There were things she didn't want her daughter hearing.
Damon helped them into his car and drove them to a private apartment he owned downtown.
Not the mansion.
Not the place where memories of Sarah haunted every room.
A smaller place.
A beginning.
Once inside, Sarah sat on the couch while Lily ate soup prepared by Damon’s staff.
The billionaire watched his daughter carefully.
Every movement.
Every smile.
Every tiny detail he had missed.
Sarah noticed.
"You really didn't know, did you?""
Damon looked at her.
"No.""
Her eyes filled with sadness.
"I believed you did.""
His expression hardened.
"Why?""
Sarah reached into her bag.
She pulled out an old envelope.
"I received this the night before our wedding.""
Damon took it.
His hands froze.
Because the handwriting looked exactly like his.
The letter said:
Sarah,
I made a mistake choosing you.
My family will never accept you.
The baby will ruin everything.
Take the money and disappear.
Do not contact me again.
Damon stared at the words.
"I never wrote this.""
"I know.""
"Then why did you believe it?""
Sarah looked down.
"Because Elisa came to me afterward.""
Damon’s jaw tightened.
"What did she say?""
Sarah closed her eyes.
"She told me you were embarrassed.""
"Embarrassed?""
"She said you only wanted me because I was convenient.""
Damon stood.
"That’s insane.""
Sarah looked at him.
"I was twenty-four, pregnant, and alone.""
Her voice cracked.
"I thought the man I loved had changed overnight.""
Damon walked toward the window.
The city stretched endlessly below.
Seven years.
Seven years stolen.
Then Sarah whispered:
"There is something else.""
He turned.
"What?""
She looked afraid.
"The letter wasn't the only thing Elisa showed me.""
Damon waited.
Sarah opened her bag again.
This time, she pulled out a photograph.
Not an engagement photo.
Not a memory.
A hospital photograph.
A newborn baby.
Lily.
And standing beside the hospital bed...
Elisa Rochefort.
Damon’s blood ran cold.
"Why was she there?""
Sarah looked directly into his eyes.
"Because she came to make sure Lily was never found.""
The room became silent.
Then Damon heard a small voice behind him.
"Daddy?""
He turned.
Lily stood in the doorway.
Holding the cake she had saved.
"I saved some for you too.""
And Damon realized something.
May you like
His daughter had spent five years learning how to survive.
But someone had spent five years making sure she stayed hidden.
