Chapter 9: The Truth Behind the Betrayal
The screen stayed frozen.
Captain Emily Shaw.
The name burned into my mind.
For years, I believed she was the person who saved me.
Now I was staring at evidence suggesting she was the reason I lost my memories.
I turned slowly.
Emily looked like she had aged ten years in a minute.
“Say something.””
She didn’t.
“Emily.””
Her eyes met mine.
“I can explain.””
I laughed quietly.
“Everyone says that.””
She looked down.
“I knew this day would come.””
That answer hurt.
Because it meant she had been waiting.
“How long?””
“Since the explosion.””
“Since before the explosion?””
She didn’t answer.
I stepped closer.
“Were you part of it?””
“No.””
The answer came instantly.
Too instantly.
“Then why was your name on that screen?””
Emily wiped her eyes.
“Because Miller was wrong.””
I froze.
“Miller was wrong?””
“Yes.””
I stared.
“You’re saying the man who died for this was wrong?””
“He wasn’t wrong about the conspiracy.””
She looked at the screen.
“But he was wrong about me.””
Raven growled softly.
Emily looked at her.
“She doesn’t trust me.””
“No.””
I looked at the dog.
“She doesn’t.””
Emily nodded.
“Then maybe she’s right.””
That surprised me.
She sat down.
For the first time, she didn’t look like an officer.
She looked exhausted.
“I was assigned to Black Falcon before you were.””
I listened.
“My job was intelligence support.””
“So?””
“So I discovered the mission was compromised.””
“By Harris?””
She shook her head.
“No.””
Again.
The answer scared me.
“Then who?””
Emily looked at the floor.
“The person above him.””
The room became quiet.
“Above Harris?””
She nodded.
“Someone with authority to erase records. Someone with access to military investigations.””
My mind raced.
“Why would Miller blame you?””
“Because I helped.””
My anger returned.
“You helped them?””
“No.””
She looked at me.
“I helped you.””
I said nothing.
Emily continued.
“After the explosion, you found the evidence.””
“The original report.””
“Yes.””
“And?””
“And someone came after you.””
I remembered the video.
I chose this.
Emily continued.
“You realized they would torture you for information. So you made a deal.””
“With who?””
“The medical team.””
I frowned.
“You volunteered?””
She nodded.
“You told them to remove the memories connected to the evidence.””
I looked at the chair.
“So I could survive.””
“Yes.””
“Then why did Miller write my name?””
Emily looked away.
“Because he didn’t know the full story.””
“What do you mean?””
“He thought I betrayed you because I was the one who signed the authorization.””
I felt the anger weaken.
Not disappear.
But change.
“What was I protecting?””
Emily stood.
“There’s something you haven’t seen.””
She walked to another cabinet.
Pulled out a small drive.
“I kept this hidden.””
“Why?””
“Because if the wrong person found it, everyone would die.””
She handed it to me.
“Yourself included.””
I inserted the drive.
A single file appeared.
BLACK FALCON ORIGINAL REPORT.
I opened it.
The first page loaded.
Names.
Coordinates.
Mission details.
Then I saw something impossible.
The operation wasn’t approved by Colonel Harris.
It wasn’t approved by anyone in our chain of command.
It came from a hidden authorization.
A signature at the bottom.
I stared.
Because I knew that signature.
Everyone in the military knew it.
The highest level of authority.
My hands went cold.
Emily watched me.
“Now you understand why your memories had to disappear.””
I kept staring.
Because the person who ordered the mission…
The person who sent my team into that facility…
Was not an enemy.
Was not a foreign agent.
Was someone wearing the same uniform I wore.
Then Raven suddenly barked.
She ran toward the door.
Someone was outside.
A shadow moved beneath the gap.
I grabbed the handle.
Pulled it open.
Nobody was there.
Only an envelope.
I picked it up.
Inside was a photograph.
A recent photograph.
Taken hours ago.
It showed me standing in the courtroom.
Beside Raven.
Beside Miller.
And behind us…
Someone had circled Colonel Harris.
But the message written underneath wasn’t about him.
May you like
It said:
“YOU ARE LOOKING AT THE WRONG COMMANDER.””
