Chapter 8: The Soldier Who Knew Too Much
The message was only three words.
“HE FOUND YOU.””
I stared at the screen.
“That’s Miller’s number?””
Emily nodded.
“But Miller is in the hospital.””
“No.””
Her face was pale.
“Not the number.””
She looked at me.
“The account.””
I didn’t understand.
Then she explained.
“Military communication accounts don’t disappear after death. They’re archived.””
“So?””
“So someone accessed his account.””
A cold feeling moved through me.
“Someone pretending to be him?””
Emily didn’t answer.
She didn’t need to.
I grabbed the phone.
“Can we trace it?””
She hesitated.
“Daniel…”
“Can we?””
She nodded.
“Maybe.””
We moved back toward the command room.
The entire base felt different now.
People weren’t just watching me.
They were watching everyone.
Because the enemy wasn’t outside.
It was inside.
A technician connected the phone.
The screen filled with data.
Location.
Access points.
Authentication history.
Then the technician stopped.
“Sir?””
Emily stepped forward.
“What?””
He looked confused.
“This message wasn’t sent from outside.””
My stomach tightened.
“Then where?””
He pointed at the screen.
“Inside this facility.””
Everyone went silent.
I looked around.
“Who has access?””
The technician hesitated.
“Command staff.””
My eyes moved toward the hallway.
Toward the office where Colonel Harris was being held.
But something felt wrong.
Too obvious.
Too easy.
Miller wouldn’t leave clues that simple.
Unless he wanted us to look there.
I looked at Raven.
She was staring at the computer screen.
Then she looked toward the exit.
“Raven?””
The dog walked away.
Fast.
I followed.
“Daniel,” Emily called.
But I kept moving.
Raven led me through the building.
Past offices.
Past storage rooms.
Past security checkpoints.
Until she stopped outside a restricted area.
The sign on the door read:
MEMORY RECOVERY UNIT.
I froze.
I had never heard of it.
Emily caught up.
When she saw the sign, she stopped too.
“You knew about this place.””
She didn’t answer.
That was enough.
I opened the door.
Inside were medical machines.
Files.
Screens.
And one chair.
A chair designed for neurological procedures.
My stomach turned.
“This is where they did it.””
Emily whispered:
“Yes.””
I looked at her.
“You were here.””
She closed her eyes.
“Yes.””
The anger returned.
“You watched.””
“I tried to stop them.””
“But you didn’t.””
Her eyes filled.
“No.””
That honesty hurt.
More than a lie would have.
I walked around the room.
Then I saw the monitor.
Still on.
A file was open.
My name.
DATE OF PROCEDURE: THREE YEARS AGO.
I clicked.
A video appeared.
My own face filled the screen.
I was sitting in the chair.
Alive.
Aware.
Talking.
I stepped back.
“No.””
Emily covered her mouth.
Because she had never seen this.
The video started.
A doctor stood beside me.
“Sergeant Carter, can you hear me?””
My recorded self nodded.
“Yes.””
The doctor continued.
“You understand why this is necessary?””
My younger self looked terrified.
But he nodded.
“I understand.””
I stared.
That wasn’t the reaction of someone being forced.
That was someone choosing.
The doctor asked:
“Are you willing to sacrifice your memories to protect the mission?””
My recorded voice answered:
“Yes.””
My heart stopped.
Emily looked at me.
“Daniel…”
I ignored her.
The video continued.
The doctor asked:
“What is the most important thing you remember?””
My younger self looked directly into the camera.
Then he said:
“Trust Raven.””
The screen flickered.
A second video appeared.
This one was only audio.
My own voice.
Older.
Calmer.
Recorded after the procedure.
“If you’re watching this, Daniel, it means you finally found the truth.””
I couldn’t move.
My own voice continued.
“You chose this.””
I whispered:
“What?””
The recording continued.
“You asked them to remove your memories.””
The room went silent.
“Because you discovered someone close to you was involved.””
Emily looked at me.
I looked at her.
Then my own voice said the words that destroyed everything.
“The person who betrayed us was not Colonel Harris.””
My heart stopped.
The recording ended.
And a final message appeared on the screen.
“IDENTIFY THE TRAITOR.””
May you like
Below it was a single name.
Captain Emily Shaw.
