Chapter 7: The Memory They Took From Me

I read the sentence three times.

Then a fourth.

“Ask Captain Shaw what happened to your memory.””

The hallway suddenly felt too narrow.

Too quiet.

I looked at Emily.

She didn’t look surprised.

That was the worst part.

Not fear.

Not confusion.

Recognition.

“You knew.””

Her eyes dropped.

“Daniel…”

“No.””

My voice shook.

“You knew there was something wrong with my memory.””

She swallowed.

“I knew you weren’t remembering everything.””

I stepped back.

Three years of questions.

Three years of wondering why certain moments felt like missing pages in a book.

Why I remembered the explosion.

But not everything after.

Why I could picture the fire.

The screams.

Raven barking.

But not how I escaped.

Not who carried me.

Not why I woke up in a hospital hundreds of miles away.

“You told everyone I was suffering from trauma.””

“I was.””

“No.””

I shook my head.

“You used it as an excuse.””

Emily looked at me.

“I used it to protect you.””

I almost laughed.

“Everyone says that.””

I held up the envelope.

“Everyone says they were protecting me.””

Raven stood between us.

Watching.

Waiting.

Emily looked at the dog.

“She remembers.””

Those words stopped me.

“What?””

Emily walked closer.

“Raven was there that night.””

“I know.””

“No, Daniel.””

Her voice became softer.

“She was there when they changed you.””

My entire body went cold.

“Changed me?””

Emily looked away.

“I need to show you something.””

She led me through the hospital corridor.

Every step felt heavier.

Like I was walking toward something I didn’t want to know.

We entered an old storage room.

She locked the door behind us.

Then she opened a cabinet.

Inside were files.

Hundreds of pages.

My name was on several folders.

I grabbed the closest one.

SERGEANT DANIEL CARTER.

My hands trembled.

“What is this?””

Emily didn’t answer.

I opened it.

The first page was a medical report.

My eyes scanned the words.

Patient experienced traumatic brain injury following explosion.

Memory disruption observed.

Recommended neurological treatment.

That part was expected.

Then I saw the next section.

Procedure authorized.

My breathing stopped.

“Procedure?””

Emily closed her eyes.

“Daniel…”

I looked at her.

“What did they do to me?””

She was silent.

And silence was enough.

I threw the file onto the table.

“You let them erase my memory?””

“No.””

“Then explain this.””

She stepped closer.

“They didn’t erase everything.””

My anger turned cold.

“What does that mean?””

“It means they removed specific memories.””

The room seemed to spin.

“Why?””

Emily looked at the files.

“Because you saw something.””

I stared.

“What?””

“The person who ordered the explosion.””

My heart pounded.

“I saw Harris?””

She shook her head.

“No.””

That answer scared me more.

“Then who?””

Emily reached into the cabinet and pulled out another file.

This one was marked differently.

BLACK FALCON RECOVERY.

She placed it in front of me.

“You weren’t supposed to remember this.””

I opened it.

Inside was a photograph.

The same underground facility.

The same place where my team died.

But this time, I saw something I had never seen before.

A room.

A table.

Documents spread across it.

And standing beside those documents…

Me.

I stared.

“That’s impossible.””

Emily’s voice was quiet.

“You found the evidence.””

My fingers tightened around the picture.

“No.””

“You did.””

“No.””

I looked at her.

“I would remember.””

Emily shook her head.

“That’s the point.””

The room went silent.

Then Raven suddenly moved.

She pushed her nose against the file.

Then scratched at the photograph.

I looked down.

There was something behind it.

A hidden compartment.

My hands went numb.

I pulled the photograph apart.

A tiny piece of paper fell out.

Miller’s handwriting.

Again.

“Daniel.””

I unfolded it.

Only one sentence.

“Your memories were not taken because you were weak.””

I continued reading.

“They were taken because you were the only witness.””

My heart stopped.

Then another line appeared beneath it.

“If you found this, Raven has already shown you the truth.””

I looked at the dog.

Then at Emily.

“Who else knows?””

Emily didn’t answer.

Because suddenly her phone rang.

She looked at the screen.

And all color disappeared from her face.

“What?””

I watched her.

“Who is it?””

She slowly lowered the phone.

“It’s impossible.””

“What is?””

She looked at me.

Her voice barely existed.

“Your old unit commander just sent me a message.””

I frowned.

“Harris?””

She shook her head.

“No.””

She turned the phone around.

May you like

The name on the screen made my blood run cold.

SERGEANT MICHAEL MILLER.
