Chapter 13: The Woman Who Ran With the Truth
For a few seconds, I couldn’t move.
I just stared at the doorway where Emily disappeared.
The woman who had saved my life.
The woman who had protected my secret.
The woman who had betrayed me.
My mind couldn’t decide which version of her was real.
“Daniel.””
Raven’s bark snapped me back.
General Vale was still alive.
Barely.
I dropped beside him.
“Stay with me.””
His eyes opened slightly.
“You have to stop her.””
“Why?””
He looked toward the door.
“Because she has the file.””
I looked at the empty hallway.
“The command authorization.””
Vale nodded weakly.
“She knows the truth.””
I pressed my hand against his wound.
“Tell me.””
His breathing became uneven.
“Daniel…”
“Tell me who she works for.””
He closed his eyes for a moment.
Then whispered:
“She doesn’t.””
That confused me.
“What?””
“She never worked for them.””
“Then why did she run?””
Vale looked at me.
“Because she knows what happens when people learn the truth.””
I stared.
“What truth?””
His eyes moved toward the drive still connected to the terminal.
“The signature.””
I looked at the screen.
My name.
My authorization.
A fake.
But why?
Vale continued.
“They didn’t forge your signature to frame you.””
My stomach tightened.
“Then why?””
“To protect you.””
The words made no sense.
“Protect me by making me look like a traitor?””
“Yes.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
Vale’s voice weakened.
“Daniel, you created Black Falcon because you didn’t trust the system.””
I remembered the notebook.
The plans.
The hidden files.
“You found corruption.””
He nodded.
“And you built a way to expose it.””
“Then why erase my memory?””
“Because you discovered the corruption went higher than anyone imagined.””
I looked at the hallway.
At the direction Emily ran.
“Who?””
Vale closed his eyes.
“I don’t know.””
That answer frustrated me.
“Everyone keeps saying they don’t know.””
“Because the person behind this never signs their own name.””
He coughed.
“They use others.””
I looked at Raven.
She was staring at the doorway.
Waiting.
She knew.
She always knew.
I stood.
“Where would Emily go?””
Vale looked at me.
“You know her.””
I froze.
Because I did.
Or I thought I did.
Emily had always been careful.
Always planned.
Always prepared an exit.
Then I remembered something.
Years ago, before Black Falcon.
She told me something during a quiet night at the base.
“When everything falls apart, people always run toward what they believe is safe.””
At the time, I thought it was just a saying.
Now I understood.
I knew exactly where she would go.
The old field hospital.
The place where she saved me.
The place where I woke up.
I turned to Raven.
“Find her.””
The dog moved immediately.
The field hospital had been abandoned for years.
The government officially closed it after Black Falcon.
Too many memories.
Too many questions.
But when we arrived, the lights were on.
Someone was inside.
I entered slowly.
Every hallway brought back pieces of my missing past.
The smell of medicine.
The sound of machines.
The feeling of waking up and not knowing my own name.
Then I heard voices.
Emily.
And someone else.
“I can’t keep protecting you.””
Emily sounded exhausted.
“You don’t understand.””
“I understand perfectly.””
I moved closer.
Then I froze.
Because the second voice belonged to Colonel Harris.
“You should have destroyed the file.””
Emily answered:
“And you should have told Daniel the truth.””
Harris laughed bitterly.
“You think he could handle it?””
I stepped into the room.
“He’s handling it now.””
Both of them turned.
Emily looked devastated.
Harris looked unsurprised.
“You followed her.””
I looked at him.
“You knew where she was going.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
“Because I know Emily.””
I looked between them.
“So what is this?””
Harris sighed.
“The last chapter of a war nobody knew existed.””
I raised my weapon.
“Start explaining.””
Emily looked at me.
“I didn’t betray you.””
I wanted to believe her.
But I couldn’t.
“Then why run?””
She looked at the command file in her hand.
“Because I finally found the person who destroyed your life.””
She held up the file.
“And I knew if you saw the name before I was ready, you would do exactly what they wanted.””
“What?””
“Go after them.””
Silence.
Harris stepped forward.
“Daniel, you need to understand something.””
I looked at him.
“You’re not the victim in this story.””
That hurt.
But I listened.
“You’re the reason they became afraid.””
I frowned.
“What does that mean?””
Emily opened the file.
Inside was a list.
Names.
Hundreds of names.
Officials.
Commanders.
Intelligence officers.
People connected to corruption.
Black Falcon wasn’t a failed mission.
It was a trap.
A trap designed by me.
I looked at Emily.
“You knew.””
She nodded.
“You created a system that exposed them.””
“And?””
“And someone inside the system discovered it.””
Harris continued:
“They couldn’t destroy Black Falcon.””
“Why?””
“Because too many copies existed.””
I stared.
“So they destroyed me instead.””
Emily nodded.
“They removed your memories. They destroyed your reputation. They turned you into the perfect scapegoat.””
I looked at the file.
Then at both of them.
“Who?””
Emily’s eyes filled with fear.
She opened her mouth.
But before she could answer—
Every screen in the room turned on.
A familiar voice filled the hospital.
My own voice.
Recorded.
“Daniel Carter.””
I froze.
The recording continued.
“If you are hearing this, it means the plan failed.””
Emily looked at the screen.
“No…”
My recorded voice continued.
“And it means the person who betrayed us has finally revealed themselves.””
A pause.
Then my voice said:
“The traitor is not Harris.””
I looked at Harris.
He closed his eyes.
The recording continued.
“The traitor is not Shaw.””
Emily stepped back.
Then the final words played.
“The traitor is the person who taught me how to fight.””
The screen displayed a name.
And I felt the world collapse.
Because I knew that name.
My mentor.
My first commander.
The man who trained me.
May you like
The man who made me a soldier.
General Thomas Vale.
