Chapter 4: The Baby They Switched

For several seconds, I couldn't hear anything except Lily crying against my chest.

Vanessa knelt on the hallway floor, her hands covering her mouth. Michael leaned against the doorframe, his bruised fingers gripping the wood so tightly his knuckles had turned white.

I looked at my wife.

“Say that again.””

Vanessa shook her head.

“Mark, please.””

“YOU JUST TOLD ME SOMEONE SWITCHED OUR BABY!””

Lily flinched.

I immediately lowered my voice and kissed the top of her head.

“I'm sorry, sweetheart. Daddy isn't angry with you.””

She clung to my shirt.

Vanessa crawled toward us.

“Lily is your daughter in every way that matters.””

“That's not what I asked.””

“She's the baby we brought home. She's the child I've raised. She's—”

“Where is my son?””

Vanessa closed her eyes.

Michael answered from behind me.

“Ask her what happened at St. Mary's Hospital on October seventeenth, seven years ago.””

I turned.

“You know when he was born?””

“I know everything that happened that night.””

Vanessa looked up sharply.

“You weren't there for the birth.””

“No,” Michael said.

“But I was there when Father took the real baby away.””

My stomach lurched.

I remembered that night clearly.

I had been standing outside the delivery room when a nurse came out and told me my wife and newborn daughter were healthy. I remembered crying with relief. I remembered Vanessa looking exhausted but smiling when she finally held Lily.

I'd thought that was the happiest night of my life.

Now every memory felt contaminated.

I stared at Vanessa.

“Did you know?””

She shook her head frantically.

“Not at first.””

“When did you find out?””

“Three days later.””

“And you said nothing?””

“I was terrified!””

I took a step backward.

“Of what? Me?””

“Of your father!””

She rose unsteadily, wiping her face with her sleeve.

“Richard came to the hospital that night. He told me there had been a complication. He said your son had a rare medical condition and needed immediate treatment at a private facility.””

“You expect me to believe you handed over our baby without asking me?””

“I didn't hand him over! They told me he was being transferred. I was still recovering. I could barely stand.””

“Who told you?””

Vanessa hesitated.

Michael's expression darkened.

“Say her name.””

Vanessa looked at him.

“Evelyn.””

The name hit me like a physical blow.

Evelyn Bennett was our mother.

She had supposedly died when I was twelve, after a long battle with an illness nobody in our family discussed. Her funeral had also been closed-casket.

I gripped the railing.

“Mom was dead.””

Michael laughed without humor.

“That's what Father wanted you to believe.””

Vanessa sank onto the bottom step.

“Evelyn was at the hospital. She wore a nurse's uniform and introduced herself as a patient advocate. I recognized her immediately, but she told me not to call her Mom. She said she'd explain everything later.””

I stared at my wife.

“You saw my mother, and you didn't tell me?””

“She said she would kill the baby if I did.””

Lily lifted her head.

“Mommy?””

Vanessa immediately reached for her.

“It's okay, sweetheart.””

Lily pulled away.

“Why did you hit me?””

The question was quiet.

It was worse than a scream.

Vanessa froze.

I felt Lily's little fingers tighten around mine.

“Because I gave Uncle Michael bread,” she continued.

“You said he wasn't allowed to eat. You said Grandfather would be angry.””

Vanessa began sobbing again.

“I was trying to keep you safe.””

“You hurt me.””

My daughter buried her face against my chest.

I looked at Vanessa and felt something colder than anger settle inside me.

“You don't get to use fear as an excuse to hurt our child.””

She lowered her head.

Michael slowly sat on the edge of the mattress.

“Father wanted an heir he could control,” he said.

“When Mark's son was born, the family trust was supposed to transfer to the next male descendant. But the child had something Father couldn't risk losing control over.””

“What?””

Michael glanced at the photograph still in my hand.

“A birthmark. A small crescent-shaped mark on his left shoulder. It runs through our father's side of the family.

Richard has it. I have it. You have it.””

I remembered the tiny crescent-shaped mark beneath my collarbone.

My hand went instinctively to my shoulder.

“What does that have to do with anything?””

“Everything. Father had been hiding the truth about our family for decades. Your son was proof of a bloodline he couldn't rewrite.””

Vanessa looked up.

“He said the baby wasn't safe. He told me Lily would be safer if everyone believed she was your biological child.””

“And you believed him?””

“I believed he would kill us if I refused.””

I looked at Michael.

“Why didn't you come to me?””

“I tried. Two days after the funeral, I drove to your apartment. Father intercepted me. He told me you knew what had happened and had agreed to the arrangement.””

“That is a lie.””

“I know that now.””

Michael rubbed his wrists.

“He showed me a document with your signature. He said you'd signed away your rights to the boy.””

I shook my head.

“I never signed anything.””

“That's what I told him.””

Michael looked toward the locked room.

“That's why he put me behind that wall.””

A terrible silence followed.

Then I remembered something.

The photograph.

The little boy had a scar above his left eyebrow.

I had the same scar, from falling off my bicycle when I was seven.

I had never told anyone outside the family how I got it.

I looked at Vanessa.

“Where is my son now?””

She wiped her face and whispered, “I don't know.””

“Don't lie to me.””

“I'm not lying!””

“Richard said I'd meet him tomorrow.””

Vanessa shook her head so violently that her hair fell across her face.

“No. Mark, you can't let him bring that boy here.””

“Why?””

She stared at me.

“Because the last time I saw your son, he wasn't a little boy anymore.””

My blood ran cold.

“What does that mean?””

Vanessa opened her mouth.

Before she could answer, Michael's phone began ringing.

We all stared at it.

An old black phone lay beneath the mattress, its screen glowing in the darkness.

Michael looked at the caller ID.

Then he whispered a name that made Vanessa scream.

“Evelyn.””
