Chapter 13: The Son Who Was Never Supposed to Exist
“Michael.””
My mother's whisper seemed to drain the air from the room.
My younger brother stood motionless, one hand pressed against the cut above his eye.
“No,” he said.
“That's impossible.””
Evelyn reached for him.
“I'm sorry, sweetheart.””
Michael backed away.
“You told me I was your son. You told me Mark and I had the same father.””
“You are my son.””
“Then what did you mean?””
She began to cry.
“Richard had a child before he married me. A boy named Jonathan. His first wife gave birth to him in secret because Richard was already involved with another woman.””
My father.
Another child.
Another hidden life.
I looked at Michael.
“Did you ever hear that name?””
He shook his head.
Evelyn continued.
“Jonathan was born with a serious heart condition. Richard was terrified the child would die before he could inherit anything. He paid doctors to conceal the birth and created a false record claiming the baby had died.””
Daniel frowned.
“But what does that have to do with Michael?””
My mother looked at my brother.
“Jonathan survived. He was adopted under a different name. When he grew up, he discovered who his biological father was and came looking for him.””
Michael's face had gone pale.
“When?””
“Thirty years ago.””
I stared at her.
“Michael is twenty-eight.””
Evelyn nodded.
“Richard changed his birth records. He made Michael appear younger than he was.””
My brother gripped the wall.
“No. I remember being born. I remember our childhood.””
“You remember the childhood Richard allowed you to remember,” she said gently.
“He brought you home as a baby after your biological mother died. I raised you as my own because I believed I was protecting you.””
Michael's eyes filled with tears.
“You knew?””
“I discovered the truth when you were six. Richard threatened to send you away if I ever told you.””
Michael covered his face.
All his life, he'd believed he was the forgotten younger son, the one who could never quite satisfy our father.
Now he was learning that even his identity had been manufactured.
I wanted to comfort him, but I couldn't ignore the question burning in my mind.
“Why did Richard switch Daniel with Lily?””
Evelyn looked at me.
“Because Daniel carries Jonathan's genetic markers.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“What?””
“Richard's first wife carried a rare inherited condition. Jonathan inherited it, and so did Michael. Richard believed that any male descendant carrying those markers could claim the original family trust.””
Michael looked up sharply.
“That makes no sense. The trust is based on lineage, not genetics.””
“Exactly,” Evelyn replied.
“But Richard falsified the legal records to make it appear that the family trust had been established specifically for Jonathan's descendants. He needed a biological heir he could present as Jonathan's son.””
Daniel stared at her.
“I'm not Jonathan's son.””
“No. You're Mark's son. But Richard intended to use you as a replacement heir after he altered the records.””
I shook my head.
“He could have simply told everyone Daniel existed.””
“He couldn't,” Evelyn said.
“Because the trust had already been transferred illegally. If Daniel's birth had been recorded correctly, Richard's fraud would have been exposed.””
A siren sounded in the distance.
Michael looked toward the door.
“We need to leave.””
Daniel checked the flash drive in his hand.
“Margaret said everything is on here. We can prove the fraud.””
“Not without the original seal,” Evelyn replied.
“Richard can claim the files are fabricated.””
I remembered the brass key.
Richard had taken it during the blackout.
“Then we find him before he destroys the records.””
My mother caught my sleeve.
“Mark, listen to me. The mausoleum isn't the only place he hid evidence.””
She reached beneath her pillow and pulled out a folded sheet of paper.
It was an old architectural drawing of the Bennett estate.
A red circle marked a location beneath the library.
“There's a room under the house,” she whispered.
“Your grandfather built it to store the original family records. Richard has used it ever since.””
I studied the drawing.
“Why didn't you tell us earlier?””
“Because I was afraid he would find out I knew.””
Michael knelt beside her.
“Mom, we're getting you out of here.””
She squeezed his hand.
“Not yet. First, you must understand something. Richard didn't arrange the accident eight years ago to kill you.””
Michael stared at her.
“Then why?””
“He wanted you to disappear because you had discovered who he really was.””
Evelyn looked at me.
“And the woman who died in that car wasn't your mother. She was Richard's first wife.””
The pieces began to fall into place.
The false funeral. The forged medical records. The woman who had raised us under Evelyn's name.
Richard had used his first wife's death to create a new identity for himself and conceal the truth about his children.
But one question remained.
“What happened to Jonathan?”” I asked.
Evelyn's eyes filled with tears.
“He died when he was twenty-four.””
Michael staggered backward.
“That's how old I was when the accident happened.””
“Yes.””
He stared at her.
“You're saying Richard thought I was Jonathan?””
“No, sweetheart. Richard knew exactly who you were.””
She swallowed.
“He arranged the accident because he wanted the world to believe Jonathan's surviving child had died. But he made one mistake.””
“What mistake?”” I asked.
Evelyn looked at Michael.
“He used the wrong body.””
Michael's expression changed.
The blood drained from his face.
“Whose body did he put in my coffin?””
My mother closed her eyes.
“Your biological father's.””
The door burst open.
Two officers rushed into the room, followed by Samuel.
“Mark!”” Samuel shouted.
“We have a problem.””
He held up his phone.
A news alert filled the screen.
*BENNETT CONSTRUCTION CEO DECLARED MISSING; POLICE INVESTIGATE POSSIBLE ABDUCTION BY ESTRANGED FAMILY MEMBERS.*
Beneath the headline was a photograph of me, Michael, and Daniel.
Samuel looked at us grimly.
“Richard has reported all three of you missing. He's claiming you kidnapped Evelyn Bennett and stole confidential company records.””
Daniel clenched his fists.
“He's trying to destroy us before the trust hearing.””
Samuel nodded.
“And he has another advantage. He filed an emergency petition this morning to have Daniel declared legally incompetent.””
Daniel stared at him.
“Can he do that?””
“He can try.””
I looked at the architectural drawing in my hand.
“Then we need the original documents tonight.””
Samuel checked his watch.
“Mark, if you go back to that estate, Richard will be waiting.””
I looked at my brother, my son, and my mother.
“Then we'll make sure he gets exactly what he wants.””
Michael stared at me.
“What?””
“A family reunion.””
I folded the drawing and slipped it into my pocket.
“But this time, we're bringing witnesses.””
May you like
Outside, the sirens grew louder.
And somewhere beneath the Bennett estate, my father was preparing to bury the truth for the final time.
