Chapter 12: The Gun in My Aunt's Hand
“Don't move.””
Margaret's voice was shaking, but the gun in her hand was steady.
Michael stared at her.
“You're going to shoot me?””
She swallowed.
“No.””
“Then put it down.””
“I can't.””
Richard stood behind her, smiling as if he were watching a family argument over dinner.
“Margaret has always been loyal,” he said.
“She simply needs occasional reminders of what happens when loyalty becomes inconvenient.””
I stepped in front of Michael.
“Let her go.””
Richard laughed.
“Mark, you've spent your entire life believing you were the good son. The responsible son. The one who would inherit everything because you followed the rules.””
He gestured toward Daniel.
“But the truth is, your son was always the one I needed.””
Daniel's fists clenched.
“You stole me from my parents.””
“I gave you a life.””
“You gave me lies.””
“I gave you an education, a home, a future. You have no idea what I sacrificed to make you worthy of this family.””
Daniel stepped forward.
“You didn't sacrifice anything. You stole everything.””
Richard's smile vanished.
He nodded to the guards.
One grabbed Daniel's arm.
Michael lunged.
The guard struck him across the face, sending him crashing into the wall.
“STOP!”” I shouted.
My mother cried out from the bed.
Richard barely glanced at her.
“Still so emotional, Evelyn. That's always been your weakness.””
She raised her head.
“No, Richard. My weakness was believing you could be saved.””
For the first time, something flickered in his expression.
Then he turned toward Margaret.
“Take the key.””
Margaret's eyes darted toward my mother's hand.
The brass key was still clenched in her fingers.
She hesitated.
Richard stepped closer.
“Now.””
Margaret moved toward the bed.
My mother looked at her.
“Margaret, you don't have to do this.””
Margaret's face crumpled.
“You don't understand what he's threatened to do.””
“I understand perfectly.””
“He said he'd have Daniel arrested. He said he'd tell the world I kidnapped him.””
“You didn't kidnap him,” my mother whispered.
“You were forced to raise him.””
Margaret shook her head.
“I still lied to him.””
“Yes,” Evelyn said.
“You did. And you can spend the rest of your life making that right.””
For a moment, the gun dipped.
Richard noticed.
He seized Margaret's wrist and twisted it.
She cried out.
The gun fell.
Michael kicked it beneath the bed.
One of the guards grabbed him, but Daniel drove his shoulder into the man's chest. They crashed against the doorframe.
I pulled my mother away from the bed as Richard reached for the brass key.
He caught my wrist.
“Give it to me.””
I twisted free.
“Not a chance.””
He struck me across the face.
My head snapped sideways. I tasted blood.
For a second, I was twelve again, standing in our old kitchen while my father told me that tears were for weak men.
But I wasn't twelve anymore.
I drove my fist into his stomach.
Richard staggered backward, gasping.
Michael grabbed the fallen gun and pointed it at the floor.
“Everyone freeze!””
The guards stopped.
Margaret pressed herself against the wall, crying.
Richard straightened slowly.
“You wouldn't shoot me, Michael.””
Michael's hand trembled.
“Try me.””
Richard smiled.
“You've always been the sentimental one. That's why you spent eight years in a hole.””
Michael flinched.
Then Daniel stepped beside him.
“It's over, Grandfather.””
Richard looked at him.
“No. It isn't.””
He reached into his jacket and pulled out a folded document.
“The trust has already been transferred. The court approved the change this afternoon. By morning, the company will belong to me.””
Daniel's face went pale.
“You forged the documents.””
“Prove it.””
My mother struggled to sit upright.
“The original seal,” she whispered.
Richard turned sharply.
“Be quiet.””
She ignored him.
“The seal is in the family mausoleum. Beneath your mother's name.””
I frowned.
“Our mother's grave?””
Evelyn nodded.
“Richard buried the real documents there because he believed no one would ever question the headstone.””
Richard's expression changed.
For the first time since we'd arrived, he looked genuinely afraid.
Michael noticed.
“So it's true.””
Richard's jaw tightened.
“You have no idea what you're talking about.””
My mother stared at him.
“I know exactly what I'm talking about. You used your first wife's identity to bury the evidence. You told everyone she died, then used her name to erase mine.””
I looked at Margaret.
“Your sister was Richard's first wife?””
Margaret nodded slowly.
“She was the woman who raised me after our parents died. I thought she was Evelyn.””
Evelyn closed her eyes.
“Richard married my sister before he married me. When she discovered his financial crimes, he arranged for her to disappear. Then he married me under a false identity.””
I felt sick.
The woman we had called Mother for twelve years was not the woman who had given birth to us.
Our real mother had been hidden away while another woman took her place.
Richard had built an entire family on a stolen identity.
And when the real Evelyn discovered the truth, he'd imprisoned her.
“You killed your first wife,” I whispered.
Richard's face hardened.
“She died because she couldn't keep her mouth shut.””
Margaret made a strangled sound.
“You told me she had cancer.””
“I told you what you needed to believe.””
Margaret stared at him with horror.
“You used me to raise Daniel.””
“You were useful.””
The words broke something inside her.
She stepped away from Richard.
“No.””
He turned toward her.
“What did you say?””
Margaret wiped her face.
“I said no.””
She looked at Daniel.
“I kept every letter your mother sent. I kept every photograph. I kept the records he told me to destroy.””
Richard lunged toward her.
But Margaret moved first.
She reached into the lining of her coat and pulled out a small flash drive.
“Everything is on here,” she said.
“The transfers. The forged death certificates. The recordings. The hospital records.””
Richard froze.
“You stupid woman.””
Margaret lifted her chin.
“Maybe. But I'm done being afraid of you.””
She tossed the drive to Daniel.
He caught it.
Then the lights went out.
A gunshot exploded in the darkness.
Lily's face flashed through my mind.
Vanessa. Samuel. The hotel.
I lunged toward Michael.
Someone screamed.
When the emergency lights flickered back on, Richard was gone.
Margaret lay on the floor, clutching her shoulder.
Michael was bleeding from a cut above his eye.
And Daniel stood beside the open doorway, staring at the empty corridor.
“He took the key,” he whispered.
I looked down at my mother's hand.
The brass key was gone.
Evelyn began to cry.
“Without that key, he'll destroy the original records.””
I knelt beside her.
“Where is the mausoleum?””
She gripped my hand.
“Outside the old estate. Beneath the grave marked Evelyn Bennett.””
Then she looked at Daniel.
“There's something else you need to know about the boy in the portrait.””
Daniel went still.
“What boy?””
“The little boy standing between Richard and Vanessa.””
My blood turned cold.
Evelyn's eyes filled with tears.
“That wasn't a photograph of your father at seven, Mark.””
She looked directly at me.
“It was a photograph of Richard's other son.””
The room fell silent.
Michael whispered, “Other son?””
Evelyn nodded.
“Richard had another child before you were born. A child he believed died in infancy.””
She took a trembling breath.
“And that child is the reason he switched the babies.””
I stared at her.
“Who was he?””
My mother closed her eyes.
May you like
Then she spoke the name that shattered the last remaining piece of our family's history.
“Michael.””
