Chapter 6: The Connection

I stared at the photograph.

My brain refused to understand what my eyes were seeing.

Daniel.

Marcus.

Together.

Years ago.

“How?”” I whispered.

Marcus looked at Daniel.

“That’s the question I’ve been trying to answer.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“Give me that.””

I pulled the photo closer.

“No.””

His face tightened.

“Don’t do this.””

I looked at him.

“Do what?””

“Destroy everything over a picture.””

Marcus let out a quiet breath.

“It’s not just a picture.””

Everyone turned toward him.

He reached into his coat again.

This time, he pulled out a business card.

“I met Daniel at a leadership conference nine years ago.””

My father looked at him.

“Before she knew him?””

Marcus nodded.

“Yes.””

I felt a chill.

“Why didn’t you tell me?””

Marcus looked ashamed.

“Because I thought I was being paranoid.””

Daniel laughed.

“You were.””

Marcus ignored him.

“I saw the way he talked about women.””

Daniel’s expression changed.

“Careful.””

Marcus looked directly at him.

“You used the same words.””

“What words?””

Marcus looked at me.

“The same excuses.””

The room became silent.

“He told me his ex was too emotional. That she misunderstood him. That every argument was someone else’s fault.””

My stomach dropped.

Because those were the same things Daniel said about me.

“He said she pushed him to anger,” Marcus continued.

My father closed his eyes.

Daniel looked away.

Marcus stepped closer.

“I recognized it because I used to say the same things.””

I looked at him.

“You’re admitting that?””

“Yes.””

His voice was quiet.

“I was like him.””

That surprised me.

Because for years, I had remembered Marcus as a villain.

But standing there, he wasn’t defending himself.

He was admitting what he had been.

“I changed,” Marcus said.

Daniel scoffed.

“Congratulations.””

Marcus looked at him.

“But you didn’t.””

Daniel’s face hardened.

“You don’t know me.””

Marcus nodded.

“I know enough.””

He pointed toward the folder.

“I know she kept records.””

Daniel looked at me.

“I can’t believe you did that.””

I felt something inside me finally break free.

“I can’t believe I had to.””

Nobody spoke.

Then my father’s phone buzzed.

He checked the screen.

His expression changed.

“What?””

I looked at him.

“What happened?””

He turned the phone toward me.

It was a message.

From Daniel’s attorney.

We need to discuss the custody situation immediately.

My chest tightened.

Daniel saw the message.

And suddenly, the fear disappeared from his face.

A small smile appeared.

“You think you can just leave?””

I stared at him.

“What are you doing?””

He picked up his keys.

“Protecting my rights.””

My father stepped forward.

“Daniel.””

But Daniel was already walking toward the door.

“You’re going to regret making me the enemy.””

The door closed behind him.

Lily grabbed my hand.

“Mommy?””

I looked down.

“Yes?””

“Is he coming back?””

I wanted to say no.

I wanted to promise her everything would be okay.

But I had learned something important.

Promises were easy.

Truth was harder.

“I don’t know.””

That night, after Lily finally fell asleep, I sat at the kitchen table.

The same kitchen.

The same sink.

The same place where everything changed.

My father sat across from me.

“You need to understand what happens next.””

I looked up.

“What?””

He pushed the folder toward me.

“There’s more.””

I frowned.

“More?””

He nodded.

“Daniel wasn’t just hiding his anger.””

My hands tightened.

“What was he hiding?””

My father looked toward the stairs where Lily slept.

Then he whispered:

“The reason he married you.””

I froze.

“What?””

He opened another file.

And the first page made my blood run cold.

Because it had my name on it.

And underneath my name was a sentence I never expected to read.

*Subject: Access to family assets.*

I looked at my father.

“What does that mean?””

He didn’t answer.

Because suddenly, the doorbell rang.

At 2:13 in the morning.

And when I looked through the window…

Daniel was not standing outside.

May you like

Someone else was.

Someone I thought I would never see again.
