Chapter 2: The Man Daniel Was Afraid Of

Daniel didn’t speak for several seconds.

He just stood outside Lily’s bedroom door, staring at the phone like it had become something dangerous.

“Give me that phone,” he finally said.

Lily didn’t answer.

I climbed the stairs slowly.

Every step felt heavier than the last.

“Daniel,” I said, “move away from her door.””

He turned around.

“You think your father can scare me?””

I looked at the man I married.

The man who once held Lily for hours when she had a fever.

The man who used to bring me coffee every morning.

I wondered when exactly that person disappeared.

“You heard her,” I said.

“Move away.””

Daniel laughed.

A cold, empty laugh.

“You’re really doing this?””

“Doing what?””

“Turning my daughter against me.””

I stared at him.

“Daniel, she called for help because she was afraid of you.””

His face tightened.

Before he could respond, Lily spoke from behind the door.

“Mommy?””

I immediately stepped closer.

“I’m here, baby.””

“Is Daddy leaving?””

I closed my eyes.

That question hurt more than anything.

“I don’t know yet.””

Daniel looked away.

For a moment, I thought maybe he finally understood.

Maybe seeing Lily afraid would break through whatever anger had taken over him.

But then he whispered:

“You’re ruining this family.””

I felt something inside me go quiet.

Not break.

Not collapse.

Just go quiet.

Because I realized I had spent years trying to save something Daniel was destroying himself.

“I didn’t ruin this family,” I said.

“You did.””

The words surprised even me.

Daniel stared at me.

Then his phone rang.

He looked down.

His expression changed.

“Who is it?”” I asked.

He ignored me.

The screen showed a name.

His lawyer.

He stepped away to answer.

I couldn’t hear everything, but I heard enough.

“No, nobody needs to come over.””

A pause.

“No, my daughter is upset. That’s all.””

Another pause.

Then his face changed again.

Because whoever was on the phone said something he didn’t expect.

Daniel ended the call quickly.

“What did they say?”” I asked.

“Nothing.””

“Daniel.””

He looked toward Lily’s door.

Then back at me.

“You called your father.””

“Yes.””

“You think that changes anything?””

I shook my head.

“No.””

I took a breath.

“It proves I finally stopped pretending nothing was happening.””

The hallway became silent.

Then headlights appeared through the window.

A car had pulled into the driveway.

Daniel looked outside.

And for the first time all night, his confidence disappeared.

My father stepped out.

He was sixty-two years old, but everyone who knew him understood one thing.

He had spent his entire life protecting people who couldn’t protect themselves.

He walked to the front door.

Daniel whispered:

“He actually came.””

I looked at him.

“Yes.””

The doorbell rang.

Nobody moved.

Then it rang again.

My father’s voice came through the house.

“Open the door, Daniel.””

Daniel swallowed.

Because my father didn’t sound angry.

He sounded calm.

And somehow that was worse.

Daniel walked downstairs.

I followed.

When he opened the door, my father stood there with a small overnight bag in one hand.

He looked past Daniel.

Straight at me.

Then he looked at Lily’s bedroom door.

“Is my granddaughter safe?””

Daniel tried to speak.

“She’s fine.””

My father looked back at him.

“I didn’t ask you.””

The silence that followed felt heavier than shouting.

Then Lily opened her door.

Slowly.

She ran past Daniel.

Straight into my father’s arms.

“Grandpa.””

He hugged her tightly.

“You did exactly what I taught you.””

Lily cried into his shoulder.

“I was scared.””

“I know, sweetheart.””

My father looked over her head at Daniel.

Then he said something that made Daniel’s face lose all color.

“Now I need to show you something.””

Daniel frowned.

“What?””

My father reached into his bag.

And pulled out a folder.

A folder with Daniel’s name written across the front.

“I’ve been waiting three years for you to give me a reason to open this.””

Daniel stared at it.

“What is that?””

My father looked at me.

Then at Lily.

May you like

Then back at Daniel.

“The truth you thought nobody would ever find.””
