Chapter 12: The Voice From The Past

I couldn’t breathe.

The phone nearly slipped from my hand.

“Who is this?””

The voice on the other end stayed silent.

Then again:

“It’s your mother.””

My father stood up.

“What?””

I put the phone on speaker.

A woman’s voice filled the kitchen.

Older.

Tired.

But unmistakable.

“I know you don’t believe me.””

My knees weakened.

Because I recognized her.

Not from memory.

From old recordings.

From the few videos my father kept hidden away.

My mother.

“Mom?””

The silence afterward was painful.

Then she whispered:

“Yes, sweetheart.””

My father grabbed the chair.

“How is this possible?””

The voice continued.

“I don’t have much time.””

My mind was spinning.

“Where are you?””

“I can’t tell you.””

“Why?””

“Because if Richard knows I contacted you, everything I did was for nothing.””

I looked at my father.

He was speechless.

“My mother is alive?””

The voice softened.

“I wanted to tell you sooner.””

I started crying.

All the years.

All the questions.

All the memories of a funeral I thought was real.

“Why did you leave me?””

The question came out before I could stop it.

The line went silent.

Then my mother answered.

“Because I thought leaving you was the only way to keep you alive.””

Nobody spoke.

My father covered his face.

I looked at him.

“You knew.””

His silence answered.

“You knew she was alive.””

He looked broken.

“I knew she survived.””

I stepped back.

“You lied to me.””

“I was trying to protect you.””

“That’s what everyone says.””

My voice cracked.

“Everyone says they’re protecting me while they take away my right to know.””

My mother spoke again.

“I’m sorry.””

I closed my eyes.

I wanted to be angry.

But hearing her voice after all these years made everything complicated.

“Where have you been?””

“Watching.””

“Watching what?””

The answer came quietly.

“Watching Daniel.””

My heart stopped.

“What?””

“He wasn’t supposed to marry you.””

My father looked at the phone.

“What do you mean?””

My mother took a shaky breath.

“Daniel was supposed to get close to you, gain access to your family’s trust, and convince you to transfer control.””

My hands trembled.

“He planned everything?””

“Yes.””

A horrible realization settled over me.

The school supplies.

The credit cards.

The control.

The isolation.

It was never just anger.

It was strategy.

“Why tell me now?””

My mother’s voice became urgent.

“Because Richard knows I contacted you.””

A noise came through the phone.

Like a door closing.

My mother whispered:

“You need to leave that house.””

I looked around.

“What?””

“Now.””

My father stood.

“Why?””

The answer was barely audible.

“Because Daniel isn’t the biggest danger.””

The lights flickered.

Everyone froze.

My father looked toward the hallway.

“What was that?””

My mother whispered:

“He’s there.””

My blood ran cold.

“Who?””

A pause.

Then:

“Richard.””

The call ended.

At the exact same moment…

The front door slowly opened.

Nobody had touched it.

My father moved in front of me.

And from the darkness of the hallway came a familiar voice.

“You finally know the truth.””

Richard stepped inside.

Calm.

Smiling.

Like he had been invited.

He looked at me.

Then at the phone in my hand.

And said:

“Now we can stop pretending your mother disappeared.””

I stepped back.

Because behind Richard…

Someone else was standing.

Daniel.

May you like

And he wasn’t looking angry.

He was looking terrified.
