Chapter 10: The Man Behind The Plan
The knock came again.
Three slow knocks.
Not rushed.
Not nervous.
Confident.
My father immediately stood.
“Stay here.””
I grabbed his arm.
“No.””
He looked at me.
“Protect Lily.””
The words stopped me.
Because that was my job now.
Not protecting Daniel’s feelings.
Not protecting our image.
Not protecting a marriage that had already fallen apart.
Protecting my daughter.
I ran upstairs.
Lily was sitting awake in bed, holding her blanket.
She had heard the noise.
“Mommy?””
I forced a calm smile.
“It’s okay, sweetheart.””
But she looked at my face.
Children always know.
“Is it him?””
I sat beside her.
“No.””
But I didn’t know if that was true.
Downstairs, the front door opened.
I could hear my father’s voice.
“Richard.””
My entire body froze.
Richard Carter.
Daniel’s father.
The name from my mother’s notebook.
The man she warned me about.
I moved closer to the stairs.
I needed to hear.
“After all these years,” Richard said calmly, “you still look at me like I’m the enemy.””
My father’s voice was cold.
“Because I know what you are.””
A quiet laugh followed.
“That’s exactly what your wife used to say.””
My breath caught.
My mother.
Richard knew my mother.
“Don’t mention her,” my father said.
“Why? Because she was right?””
Silence.
Then Richard continued.
“She always was.””
I slowly walked down the stairs.
I needed to see him.
Richard stood in the doorway.
Older than I expected.
Gray hair.
Expensive coat.
A calm expression.
The kind of person who never needed to raise his voice because he believed everyone else would listen.
His eyes moved toward me.
And he smiled.
Not warmly.
Like he already knew me.
“So this is her.””
I stopped.
“What?””
Richard looked at me.
“The daughter.””
My father stepped in front of me.
“Leave.””
Richard ignored him.
“You look like your mother.””
I felt anger rise.
“Don’t talk about her.””
For the first time, Richard’s expression changed.
A small flicker of respect.
“She had courage.””
My father laughed bitterly.
“She had the courage to expose you.””
Richard looked at him.
“And you had the courage to hide everything from your daughter.””
The words hit.
Because they were true.
My father’s silence confirmed it.
I looked at him.
“What is he talking about?””
Richard sighed.
“This is why secrets destroy families.””
I stepped forward.
“No.””
My voice surprised everyone.
“I’m done letting people talk around me.””
I looked at Richard.
“You knew Daniel before I met him.””
“Yes.””
“You knew he was getting close to me.””
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Richard smiled slightly.
“Because Daniel was trying to protect his future.””
I felt sick.
“By marrying me?””
He didn’t answer.
And that was enough.
My father moved closer.
“You’re not getting what you want.””
Richard looked amused.
“You still think this is about money.””
I frowned.
“What else would it be about?””
Richard looked at me.
“Your mother.””
The room went silent.
“My mother?””
Richard nodded.
“She found something.””
My heart raced.
“What?””
“A company record.””
My father interrupted.
“Enough.””
Richard looked at him.
“You can’t protect her forever.””
Then he turned back to me.
“Your mother discovered that your family’s trust wasn’t created the way you were told.””
I stared.
“What does that mean?””
“It means your mother knew someone close to you was lying.””
My father’s face changed.
Because he knew exactly what Richard meant.
“Who?””
Richard smiled.
“That’s the question.””
A sound came from upstairs.
A door opening.
My heart dropped.
“Lily?””
I ran.
But when I reached her room, she was still there.
Safe.
Then I saw the window.
Open.
Cold air moving the curtains.
On the windowsill was a small envelope.
My hands shook as I picked it up.
Inside was a single piece of paper.
Five words.
*Ask your father what happened.*
I turned around.
Because suddenly, I wasn’t sure who I could trust anymore.
Not Daniel.
Not Richard.
Maybe not even my own father.
May you like
And downstairs…
My father was already crying.
