Chapter 3: The Person Diane Never Expected
Diane stared at her phone like it had become dangerous.
Ryan noticed.
“Who is calling?””
She locked the screen.
“Nobody.””
But it was too late.
Ryan had seen the name.
“Mom.””
Diane said nothing.
“Who is Mark?””
The question hung in the air.
Because everyone already knew.
Uncle Mark.
Ryan’s older brother.
The one who always appeared whenever money was involved.
The one who somehow knew every detail about Ryan’s finances.
The one Diane always defended.
Emily held onto my hand.
I could feel her trembling.
Not because of the pool anymore.
Because she was afraid nobody would believe her.
I knelt down beside her.
“Sweetheart, you did the right thing.””
She looked at me.
“But Grandma said you wouldn’t believe me.””
My heart broke.
I hugged her.
“Mommy will always believe you.””
Behind me, Ryan was still staring at Diane.
“You threatened our daughter?””
Diane immediately shook her head.
“No.””
Emily looked up.
“Yes, she did.””
Diane turned sharply.
“Emily.””
The way she said my daughter’s name made my entire body tense.
Ryan noticed too.
“Don’t talk to her like that.””
Diane took a deep breath.
Then suddenly her entire attitude changed.
The anger disappeared.
The coldness disappeared.
She looked hurt.
Almost fragile.
“Ryan, I made mistakes.””
I watched her carefully.
Because I had seen this before.
Whenever Diane was cornered, she became someone else.
“I was scared,” she continued.
“Your father left everything complicated. I was trying to protect this family.””
Ryan looked confused.
“By taking my documents?””
“No.””
She stepped closer.
“By fixing problems you didn’t even know existed.””
It was almost convincing.
Almost.
Then Ryan opened the folder again.
He pulled out one more document.
His expression changed.
“What is this?””
Diane stopped.
Ryan looked at the paper.
“Mom… why is there a transfer request for $250,000?””
Nobody moved.
Diane looked away.
“That isn’t what you think.””
“Then explain it.””
Silence.
I watched Ryan’s face.
The man who had spent years trusting his mother was finally seeing something he couldn’t ignore.
“She was going to take that money,” I said.
Diane looked at me.
“You don’t understand.””
“No,” I replied.
“I understand perfectly.””
She stepped forward.
“You think you’re better than me?””
“No.””
I looked at Emily.
“I think my daughter deserves to feel safe in her own home.””
That sentence hit harder than any insult.
Diane grabbed her purse.
“I’m leaving.””
Ryan blocked the door.
“Not until you explain.””
For the first time, Diane looked truly angry.
“You would choose them over me?””
Ryan stared at her.
“They’re my wife and daughter.””
Diane laughed bitterly.
“You have no idea what your wife is hiding.””
The room went silent.
I felt Ryan look at me.
“What does that mean?””
Diane smiled.
A small, confident smile.
The kind of smile someone gives when they believe they still have one final weapon.
“I think you should ask your wife why she never told you what happened three years ago.””
My stomach dropped.
May you like
Because I knew exactly what she was talking about.
And I knew the truth Diane was about to reveal could destroy everything.
