Chapter 2: The Lie She Tried To Protect

Ryan had always been the kind of man who searched for explanations before making accusations.

That was one of the reasons I loved him.

He believed people deserved a chance to explain themselves.

But when he looked at his mother holding that purse, I saw something I had never seen before.

Doubt.

“Mom,” he said slowly.

“Open the purse.””

Diane gave a small laugh.

“You’re serious?””

“Yes.””

Her eyes moved between us.

“You’re believing a child over your own mother?””

I almost couldn’t believe what I was hearing.

Emily was standing behind me, still wrapped in a towel.

She had almost drowned.

And Diane was making herself the victim.

“That’s not what this is about,” Ryan said.

“Oh, really?”” Diane snapped.

“Because it feels like everyone is attacking me.””

I stepped forward.

“My daughter almost drowned.””

Diane looked at me coldly.

“She didn’t.””

The words hit harder than I expected.

“She’s standing right there.””

“Exactly,” Diane said.

“She’s fine.””

Ryan’s jaw tightened.

“Mom, enough.””

For the first time, Diane became quiet.

Ryan held out his hand.

“The folder.””

She didn’t move.

“Why do you need to see it?””

“Because Emily said she saw you take it.””

Diane shook her head.

“She’s a child.””

Ryan looked at Emily.

Then back at his mother.

“And she’s my child.””

The backyard became silent.

Finally, Diane slowly opened her purse.

Inside were several items.

Her wallet.

Her keys.

A makeup bag.

And underneath everything…

A blue folder.

My breath caught.

Ryan reached for it.

Diane grabbed his wrist.

“Don’t.””

That one word changed everything.

Ryan stared at her hand.

Then at her face.

“Why?””

Diane let go.

She suddenly looked older.

Tired.

But I didn’t feel sympathy.

Not after watching my daughter come up from that water.

Ryan opened the folder.

Inside were documents from his office.

Financial papers.

Property information.

And a copy of a private contract.

Ryan’s expression changed as he read.

“What is this?””

Diane looked away.

“Nothing.””

“Nothing?””

He flipped through the pages.

“Mom, these are company documents.””

I looked at Ryan.

“What kind of documents?””

He didn’t answer immediately.

That scared me more.

Finally, he said, “Documents related to the investment account my father left me.””

Diane crossed her arms.

“You weren’t using that money correctly.””

Ryan stared at her.

“So you took my documents?””

“I was helping you.””

“No.””

His voice was firm.

“You were hiding something.””

Diane’s face hardened.

“I am your mother.””

“And Emily is my daughter.””

The silence after that sentence was heavy.

Diane looked at me.

“You’ve turned him against me.””

I laughed quietly.

“No.””

I pointed toward Emily.

“My daughter did that when she told the truth.””

Diane’s expression became ugly.

“You always thought I wasn’t good enough for this family.””

I couldn’t believe it.

She was still changing the story.

Still trying to make herself innocent.

Ryan picked up another paper.

Then his face went pale.

“What is this?””

Diane didn’t answer.

He looked at her.

“Mom.””

Nothing.

“Why is my signature on this?””

My heart started racing.

“What?””

Ryan handed me the paper.

I looked down.

It was a withdrawal authorization form.

And at the bottom was Ryan’s name.

But something was wrong.

The signature looked almost identical.

Almost.

Emily quietly tugged on my sleeve.

“Mommy?””

I looked down.

“Yes, baby?””

She swallowed.

“Grandma told someone to make Daddy sign it.””

Ryan heard her.

His head snapped up.

“Someone?””

Emily nodded.

“She said Uncle Mark knew how to make it look real.””

Diane’s face suddenly lost all color.

Ryan stepped closer.

“Mom…”

His voice was different now.

Not angry.

Disappointed.

“Did you and Mark try to take money from me?””

Diane opened her mouth.

No words came out.

Then her phone rang.

Everyone looked toward the sound.

Diane looked at the screen.

And immediately turned pale.

May you like

Because the name appearing on it was not someone from the family.

It was the last person she wanted standing against her.
