Chapter 12: The Recording That Changed Everything

We listened to the recording in Ryan’s office.

Nobody spoke.

Nobody moved.

The small device sat on the desk between us.

A piece of plastic holding three years of secrets.

Ryan pressed play.

At first, there was only static.

Then voices.

His father.

And Mark.

“I’m giving Ryan control because he’s the only one I trust.””

Ryan covered his mouth.

Hearing his father’s voice again broke something inside him.

Then Mark spoke.

“You can’t do this.””

His voice sounded angry.

“You’re giving everything to him?””

“Yes.””

“He doesn’t understand business.””

“He understands people.””

A pause.

Then Mark’s voice changed.

“You’re making a mistake.””

The recording became quieter.

Then Diane’s voice appeared.

“Stop arguing.””

Ryan looked at me.

I already knew.

This was the conversation from three years ago.

The one I overheard.

Then Mark said something that made all of us freeze.

“If he changes the documents, we lose everything.””

Ryan leaned closer.

“What documents?””

The recording continued.

His father sounded tired.

“I already changed them.””

Mark became silent.

Then:

“You’ll regret this.””

The recording ended.

Nobody spoke.

Ryan stared at the device.

“He threatened my father.””

I nodded.

But Diane’s words still haunted me.

Your father didn’t die naturally.

Ryan replayed the final seconds.

Over and over.

Then he noticed something.

“Wait.””

He stopped the recording.

“What?””

He looked at me.

“There’s another voice.””

We listened again.

Very carefully.

Under the argument.

A third person.

A woman.

Ryan’s face changed.

“That’s Mom.””

I shook my head.

“No.””

He looked at me.

“She was there.””

Then we heard it.

Clear.

Diane saying:

“Mark, stop. This has gone too far.””

Ryan stood.

“She knew.””

“Yes,” I whispered.

“But she wasn’t the only one.””

Because one question remained.

What happened after that argument?

Why did Ryan’s father die two days later?

And why did Mark have everything prepared?

Ryan opened his laptop.

“I’m checking the company records.””

I watched him type.

Then suddenly he stopped.

“What?””

He stared at the screen.

“What did you find?””

He turned the laptop toward me.

A security report.

From the night his father died.

A visitor entry.

Someone had entered the house.

Someone who was never mentioned.

Ryan whispered:

“This person was there that night.””

I looked at the name.

And my heart sank.

Because it was someone I knew.

Someone who had comforted Ryan after his father died.

Someone everyone trusted.

Ryan looked at me.

“Rachel…”

I stared at the screen.

Because the person who entered the house that night was not Diane.

Not Mark.

It was the person who had spent three years pretending to help our family heal.

It was Ryan’s best friend.

Thomas.
