Chapter 11: Diane’s Final Confession
We met Diane at a small coffee shop twenty minutes from our house.
She chose the location.
Not us.
That alone made me suspicious.
Diane sat near the window wearing sunglasses.
She looked different.
Not powerful.
Not confident.
Almost defeated.
Ryan sat across from her.
“Talk.””
No greeting.
No small talk.
Diane removed her sunglasses.
“I know you’re angry.””
“You pushed my daughter into a pool.””
Her face tightened.
“I made a mistake.””
I almost stood up.
“A mistake?””
Ryan held up his hand.
Not because he disagreed.
Because he wanted answers.
“Why?””
Diane looked down.
“I was scared.””
“Of what?””
She took a deep breath.
“Of losing everything.””
Ryan frowned.
“You have money.””
“That’s not what I mean.””
Diane looked at him.
“After your father died, I found something.””
“What?””
“A recording.””
My body went still.
“What kind of recording?””
Diane looked at me.
“One that proves Mark was planning to take the company.””
Ryan’s expression changed.
“Then why protect him?””
“I didn’t.””
“You worked with him.””
Diane shook her head.
“At first.””
That answer surprised everyone.
“At first?””
She nodded.
“Mark came to me because he knew I was desperate. He told me your father had changed the will.””
Ryan leaned forward.
“What will?””
Diane swallowed.
“Your father left control of everything to you.””
Ryan stared.
“But that was already true.””
“No.””
Diane shook her head.
“He left you something else.””
“What?””
“A letter.””
Silence.
“A letter explaining why he trusted you.””
Ryan looked confused.
“Where is it?””
Diane looked away.
“Mark has it.””
My heart raced.
“Why?””
“Because he used it as insurance.””
Ryan stood slightly.
“So this entire thing…”
“Was Mark.””
Diane nodded.
“He convinced me to help him access documents. He said he only needed information.””
Her eyes filled with regret.
“But then he started changing things.””
Ryan stared at her.
“And Emily?””
Diane looked down.
“I panicked.””
That answer disgusted me.
“You panicked, so you hurt a child?””
Diane closed her eyes.
“I know.””
“No.””
My voice became cold.
“You don’t.””
She looked at me.
“You don’t know what it feels like to realize you destroyed your own family.””
I shook my head.
“You destroyed it when you decided a six-year-old was easier to silence than telling the truth.””
Diane looked away.
For once, she had no response.
Then Ryan asked:
“Why did you tell Mark to accuse Rachel?””
Diane hesitated.
“Because I knew you would question her.””
The honesty was worse.
Ryan looked hurt.
“You used my marriage.””
“I thought if you were distracted, I could fix things.””
“No.””
Ryan stood.
“You were protecting yourself.””
Diane didn’t deny it.
Then she reached into her bag.
And placed a small recorder on the table.
“This is what you need.””
Ryan looked at it.
“What is it?””
“The recording.””
My heart started pounding.
“Of Mark?””
Diane nodded.
“Of the night your father died.””
Nobody moved.
Ryan picked it up.
“Why give this to us now?””
Diane looked at him.
“Because Mark tried to destroy my granddaughter.””
She looked at me.
“And because I finally realized what kind of person I became.””
Ryan grabbed the recorder.
But before he could leave, Diane said:
“Ryan.””
He stopped.
“There’s one more thing.””
“What?””
Diane’s voice dropped.
May you like
“Your father didn’t die naturally.””
The world seemed to stop.
