Chapter 8: The Inheritance War

I stared at the photograph until the faces blurred.

Claire.

Margaret.

Daniel.

Three people sitting together.

Planning something.

Planning me.

I wanted to believe there was an explanation.

Some innocent reason.

Some misunderstanding.

But I had learned something today.

The truth didn’t usually arrive gently.

It arrived like a storm.

“Dad…”

My voice shook.

“What does ‘remove me’ mean?””

Richard’s jaw tightened.

“It means they wanted you out of Bennett Holdings.””

I looked at the documents again.

“That doesn’t make sense.””

Claire had never cared about the company.

At least, that was what I believed.

My father sat me down near the SUV.

“Your grandfather created a trust.””

I nodded slowly.

“I know.””

The Bennett family trust.

The one everyone joked about.

The one that would eventually divide control of the company between my sister and me.

But there was something I didn’t know.

“The trust had a condition,” my father said.

“What condition?””

He looked at me.

“You had to remain a direct heir with no legal complications.””

My stomach tightened.

“Legal complications?””

Richard nodded.

“Your sister knew.””

A cold feeling moved through me.

“Divorce?””

“Marriage agreements. Financial disputes. Anything that could challenge your position.””

I looked back at Daniel.

“So they wanted me married.””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

My father handed me another document.

“Because a husband could influence your decisions.””

I read the page.

My hands went cold.

Daniel wasn’t just supposed to marry me.

He was supposed to control me.

My votes.

My shares.

My inheritance.

My future.

I looked at Daniel.

“Was that the plan?””

He looked broken.

“I never signed anything giving me control.””

“But you planned to.””

His silence answered.

Daniel stepped closer.

“Emily, listen to me.””

I looked at him.

“Why should I?””

“Because Claire manipulated me too.””

I laughed.

“You expect me to believe you were a victim?””

“No.””

He looked ashamed.

“I made choices.””

At least he finally admitted something.

“But I didn’t know everything.””

My father stepped forward.

“You knew enough.””

Daniel lowered his eyes.

“Yes.””

The honesty surprised me.

Then hurt me more.

Margaret suddenly spoke.

“You’re all acting like we committed some crime.””

Everyone turned.

She looked furious.

“You think this company belongs to you because you were born first?””

My father stared at her.

“What?””

Margaret looked at me.

“This family was drowning before Daniel married you.””

She pointed toward the mansion.

“We built something.””

I almost smiled.

“You built it with my father’s money.””

Her face changed.

Because it was true.

Richard’s expression hardened.

“Margaret, your family survived because Bennett Holdings saved your husband’s company.””

“And now you’re taking it away?””

My father looked at her.

“No.””

He looked at me.

“I’m protecting my daughter.””

The words hit me.

Because for the first time, someone said it clearly.

My daughter.

Not my money.

Not my inheritance.

Me.

I looked down at my stomach.

My baby moved.

A tiny reminder that I wasn’t alone.

Daniel saw it.

His expression softened.

“Emily…”

I stepped back.

“Don’t.””

He stopped.

“I’m sorry.””

The apology came quietly.

Almost too quietly.

I wanted to believe him.

But trust wasn’t something words could rebuild.

Not after everything.

My father’s assistant approached.

“Mr. Bennett, we found something else.””

Richard frowned.

“What?””

The assistant handed him a phone.

“The missing files from three years ago.””

My father’s face changed.

“What files?””

He looked at me.

“The original reason Claire approached Daniel.””

My heart sank.

I took the phone.

There was a recording.

A conversation.

Claire’s voice filled the air.

“Once Emily marries him, we just need to wait.””

Daniel’s voice responded.

“And then?””

Claire laughed.

“Then my father will have no choice.””

I stopped breathing.

The recording continued.

Daniel asked:

“What if Emily finds out?””

Claire answered:

“She won’t.””

A pause.

Then the sentence that made my blood run cold.

“Emily has always been easy to control.””

I dropped the phone.

Daniel closed his eyes.

Margaret looked away.

And suddenly I understood.

This wasn’t just about money.

This was personal.

My sister didn’t want my inheritance.

She wanted my place.

My father picked up the phone.

“Emily…”

I looked at him.

“What?””

He hesitated.

“There’s something else on the recording.””

I felt my heart race.

“What?””

His face was serious.

“Claire wasn’t working alone.””

I looked toward the mansion.

Toward Daniel.

Toward Margaret.

“Who else?””

My father pressed play.

A new voice appeared.

May you like

A voice I recognized immediately.

And the person speaking said my name.
