Chapter 5: The Marriage Contract
I read the sentence again.
Then again.
My brain refused to accept what my eyes were seeing.
Secured.
That was the word.
Not loved.
Not protected.
Not cherished.
Secured.
Like I was an asset.
Like my life was a business transaction.
I looked at Daniel.
“You married me for my family.””
He immediately shook his head.
“No.””
The answer came too quickly.
Too desperately.
“I loved you.””
I held up the document.
“Then what is this?””
Daniel opened his mouth.
Nothing came out.
Margaret answered for him.
“An old agreement.””
I turned slowly.
“An agreement where your son planned to marry me before he even knew me?””
She didn’t blink.
“You’re misunderstanding.””
“No.””
I walked closer.
“I’m finally understanding.””
The backyard felt colder despite the Texas heat.
Daniel looked at the ground.
That was the moment I knew.
He wasn’t innocent.
Maybe he had feelings.
Maybe some part of our marriage had been real.
But the foundation was built on a lie.
I remembered the first time I met him.
A coffee shop downtown.
He had spilled coffee on my coat.
He had laughed and apologized.
“I promise I’m usually less embarrassing.””
I had laughed.
I thought he was charming.
I thought fate had introduced us.
Now I wondered if he had been searching for me.
My father had warned me once.
“Emily, people see money before they see the person who has it.””
I had ignored him.
Because Daniel was different.
Or so I believed.
Margaret stepped forward.
“You need to calm down and think logically.””
I looked at her.
“Like you did?””
She frowned.
“What?””
“When you planned my life like a business deal?””
Her lips tightened.
“You don’t understand the pressure Daniel was under.””
I laughed.
“No. I understand perfectly.””
I looked at Daniel.
“Your family needed access to my father’s company.””
“That’s not why.””
“Then why?””
Again.
Silence.
I nodded.
“Exactly.””
Daniel’s voice became desperate.
“Emily, yes, the agreement existed. But things changed.””
“When?””
“When I fell in love with you.””
“When?””
He hesitated.
I smiled sadly.
“You don’t even know.””
His face fell.
That hurt more than anger.
Because it meant I was right.
The man who claimed to love me couldn’t even identify when his feelings became real.
The oldest man from my father’s team stepped forward.
“Mrs. Carter, there’s another issue.””
I looked at him.
“What now?””
He handed me a tablet.
“Your father requested we show you this before you make any decisions.””
I looked at the screen.
A security report.
Emails.
Messages.
My hands tightened around the device.
The first message was from Margaret.
*The pregnancy must happen before the merger deadline.*
The second was from Daniel.
*I understand. I’ll make sure Emily trusts me.*
My breathing became shallow.
The room spun.
“They were planning my pregnancy?””
Daniel’s face changed.
“Emily—”
“No.””
I kept scrolling.
There were more messages.
More dates.
More conversations.
Then I saw one that made my blood run cold.
It was sent two weeks before our wedding.
From Daniel.
To Margaret.
*Once Emily signs over her inheritance rights, we can finally move forward.*
I looked up.
“Move forward?””
Daniel looked terrified.
“Please let me explain.””
I stared at him.
“Did you ever love me?””
His eyes filled with tears.
That almost made me angry.
Because I didn’t know if his pain was real.
“I do.””
I shook my head.
“I don’t know what was real anymore.””
Margaret suddenly stepped forward.
“You’re being emotional because of the pregnancy.””
I looked at her.
“You keep saying that.””
She raised an eyebrow.
“Because it’s true.””
I smiled.
“No.””
I touched my stomach.
“My daughter is the reason I’m seeing clearly.””
The word daughter made Margaret’s face tighten.
Like even now, she hated that my baby was a girl.
My phone buzzed.
A message from my father.
*Do not leave yet. There is one final piece of information.*
I looked toward the driveway.
“What else?””
The oldest man looked uncomfortable.
“Mrs. Carter, your father discovered something about Olivia’s pregnancy.””
Daniel froze.
Margaret looked away.
I noticed.
“What?””
The man hesitated.
Then he said:
“The baby Olivia is carrying…”
I waited.
“May not be Daniel’s.””
Daniel’s face went blank.
“What?””
The man continued.
“Your father’s investigators found evidence that Olivia was involved with someone else during the same period.””
Margaret suddenly snapped.
“That’s impossible.””
I looked at her.
Interesting.
She sounded less shocked than angry.
The man turned the tablet toward Daniel.
“Mr. Carter, you may want to see this.””
Daniel looked down.
His expression changed.
The confidence.
The arrogance.
Everything disappeared.
Because whatever was on that screen had terrified him.
I stepped closer.
“What did you find?””
Daniel whispered:
“Emily…”
I stared at him.
“Tell me.””
His hands started shaking.
May you like
And then he said something I never expected.
“Olivia lied to me too.””
