Chapter 3: The Secret They Buried

The name on the document stared back at me.

Olivia Hart.

My former best friend.

The woman who had stood beside me at my wedding.

The woman who had held my hand when I cried because I thought I would never be able to have a child.

The woman who had told me Daniel was lucky to have me.

My vision blurred.

“No.””

Daniel stepped forward.

“Emily—”

I raised my hand.

“Don’t.””

He stopped.

For once, he listened.

The backyard had emptied except for a few family members who were too shocked to leave.

I looked at Margaret.

“Did you know?””

She didn’t answer.

That was enough.

“You knew.””

Margaret lifted her chin.

“You need to calm down.””

I almost laughed.

“Calm down?””

I pointed toward the cake still scattered across the grass.

“You humiliated me in front of everyone because I’m carrying a girl.””

Then I held up the photograph.

“And now I find out you were celebrating another pregnant woman?””

Margaret’s eyes narrowed.

“Olivia is carrying a Carter child.””

The words landed like a slap.

Daniel closed his eyes.

“Mom.””

I turned toward him.

“Your mother just said another woman is carrying your child.””

He looked broken.

But not surprised.

That was the worst part.

“How long?””

Daniel swallowed.

“Emily…”

“How long?””

The silence stretched.

Finally, he whispered.

“Six months.””

My hand moved instinctively to my stomach.

Six months.

I was seven months pregnant.

He had betrayed me almost the entire pregnancy.

I remembered every night he came home late.

Every business trip.

Every time he said, “You worry too much.””

I remembered believing him.

Margaret stepped closer.

“You need to understand the situation.””

I stared at her.

“The situation?””

“Yes.””

She lowered her voice.

“Olivia will give this family the son we need.””

I felt a coldness spread through me.

“You planned this.””

Margaret didn’t deny it.

“Daniel made a mistake marrying someone who doesn’t understand our family.””

Daniel looked at her.

“Mom, stop.””

But his voice had no power.

I looked at him.

“You let her talk about me like this.””

“I was trying to fix everything.””

“Fix?””

I laughed.

“You were going to fix your wife by replacing her?””

His face fell.

I turned to the man my father sent.

“Is there anything else?””

He nodded.

“There is.””

Daniel looked alarmed.

“Emily, don’t.””

I ignored him.

The man handed me another envelope.

“This contains financial records.””

I opened it.

Inside were bank transfers.

Payments.

Hotel bills.

And something else.

A transfer from Margaret’s account.

To Olivia.

My eyes narrowed.

“She paid her.””

Daniel looked away.

Margaret immediately defended herself.

“It was support.””

“For what?””

No one answered.

The document showed payments continuing for months.

Margaret wasn’t just aware.

She was involved.

She had helped hide the affair.

She had helped create a second life behind my back.

A memory suddenly flashed through my mind.

Three months earlier, Margaret had visited my house.

She had placed her hand on my stomach and said:

“A mother knows when something is wrong.””

At the time, I thought she was talking about the baby.

Now I realized she was talking about herself.

She knew everything.

I closed the folder.

“Daniel.””

He looked at me.

“What?””

I took off my wedding ring.

His face changed.

“Emily, don’t do this.””

I placed the ring in his hand.

“You already did.””

“Please.””

The word sounded small.

Weak.

I looked at the man I thought would protect me.

“You watched your mother attack me.””

He looked down.

“You asked me to apologize.””

His eyes filled with regret.

“And now I know you were building another family while I carried your daughter.””

“Emily…”

I stepped back.

“I’m done.””

Margaret suddenly smiled.

A small, cruel smile.

“You think walking away gives you power?””

I looked at her.

She continued.

“Daniel is my son. This family belongs to him.””

I smiled sadly.

“No.””

I touched my stomach.

“This family belongs to my daughter and me.””

Margaret’s expression changed.

Because for the first time, she understood something.

I wasn’t crying.

I wasn’t begging.

I wasn’t the woman she thought she could destroy.

My phone rang.

I looked down.

It was my father.

I answered.

“Dad?””

His voice came immediately.

“Emily, I just received the final report.””

I glanced at Daniel.

“And?””

A pause.

Then my father said:

“There’s one thing you need to know about Daniel’s marriage before you make your next move.””

I frowned.

“What are you talking about?””

My father’s voice became serious.

“Emily… you were never his first wife.””

May you like

I stopped breathing.

And across the backyard, Daniel’s face turned completely white.
