Chapter 10: The Signature That Destroyed Everything
I stared at the signature until the letters stopped looking like a name.
Daniel Carter.
My husband.
The man who had watched me get humiliated.
The man who had lied about Olivia.
The man who had married me under a hidden agreement.
And now, the man whose signature was being used to prove I was unstable.
I looked up slowly.
“Why?””
Daniel’s face went pale.
“Emily…”
“No.””
My voice was quiet.
Almost calm.
That scared everyone more.
“Don’t say my name like you don’t know what you did.””
Daniel stepped toward me.
“I can explain.””
I held up the tablet.
“You signed a statement saying I’m mentally unfit.””
His eyes filled with panic.
“I didn’t write that.””
“But you signed it.””
Silence.
The same silence that had followed every betrayal.
The silence of someone who knew there was no defense.
My father took the tablet from me.
“Daniel, when did you sign this?””
Daniel looked at the ground.
“Three months ago.””
My heart sank.
Three months.
The exact time I had started noticing him changing.
The late nights.
The secret phone calls.
The distance.
“You were planning this while I was carrying your child.””
His face twisted.
“No.””
“Then what?””
“I thought it was something else.””
I laughed softly.
“You thought?””
Daniel rubbed his forehead.
“My mother told me it was a financial protection document.””
Margaret immediately looked away.
I turned toward her.
“You lied to him too?””
She said nothing.
Interesting.
For the first time, Daniel and I were standing on the same side of something.
A lie.
But that didn’t erase what he had done.
My father’s voice was cold.
“You signed a document without reading it?””
Daniel swallowed.
“Yes.””
“That is not an excuse.””
“I know.””
My father stepped closer.
“Do you understand what this could have done to my daughter?””
Daniel looked at me.
“I do now.””
I shook my head.
“No.””
He looked hurt.
“You don’t get to understand now.””
The words were sharper than I expected.
But they were true.
Understanding after destruction wasn’t the same as protecting before it happened.
The assistant cleared his throat.
“Mr. Bennett, there’s another detail.””
I looked at him.
“What?””
He opened another file.
“The emergency motion was prepared before today.””
My father frowned.
“How long before?””
“Six weeks.””
My stomach tightened.
Six weeks.
Before Margaret attacked me.
Before the gender reveal.
Before I knew anything.
They had already planned my downfall.
The assistant continued.
“And there is evidence that Claire and Margaret were coordinating.””
He showed us emails.
Messages.
Schedules.
My sister’s words appeared on the screen.
*The pregnancy will make her emotional. It’s the perfect time.*
I felt sick.
They weren’t just trying to steal from me.
They were waiting for me to be vulnerable.
Pregnant.
Exhausted.
Alone.
I looked at Daniel.
“Did you know about this?””
He shook his head.
“No.””
“Did you know they were trying to take my inheritance?””
“No.””
“Did you know they wanted to destroy me?””
His eyes filled.
“No.””
I nodded slowly.
“Then you were just useful.””
That sentence hurt him.
I could see it.
But I couldn’t take it back.
Margaret suddenly stepped forward.
“You’re making a mistake.””
I looked at her.
“Really?””
“Yes.””
Her confidence returned.
“You think your father’s money makes you untouchable.””
“No.””
I looked at my daughter’s name written on the ultrasound photo in my purse.
“My daughter makes me untouchable.””
Margaret’s expression darkened.
“You’re going to regret turning against this family.””
I smiled.
“You stopped being my family when you hurt my child.””
The words silenced her.
My father looked at me.
“Emily, there is one more thing.””
I sighed.
“Of course there is.””
He handed me an envelope.
“This came from the company lawyer.””
I opened it.
Inside was a letter.
A letter written by Daniel.
My hands froze.
“When did he write this?””
My father looked at Daniel.
“Before the wedding.””
Daniel looked terrified.
I read the first line.
*If anything happens to Emily Bennett’s inheritance rights, I will have fulfilled my agreement with Thomas Bennett.*
I stopped.
Thomas.
Again.
I looked at Daniel.
“What agreement?””
His face collapsed.
“Emily…”
“What agreement?””
He closed his eyes.
“I was going to tell you.””
I laughed.
“Everyone always says that.””
He looked broken.
“I met Thomas before I met you.””
The world became quiet.
“What did he ask you to do?””
Daniel didn’t answer.
And I already knew.
My father took the letter from my hand.
His expression changed.
Because he had found the part I hadn’t read.
The final sentence.
The sentence Daniel had written himself.
*I will marry Emily Bennett, gain her trust, and remove her from the company.*
I looked at Daniel.
The man who had promised me forever.
May you like
And I whispered:
“You never loved me at all.””
