Chapter 9: The Betrayal Inside The House
My father stared at the document for almost a full minute.
Nobody moved.
Nobody spoke.
The kitchen felt like it had stopped breathing.
Finally, he whispered:
“That isn’t my signature.””
Vanessa looked at him.
“I know.””
I looked between them.
“Then why does it exist?””
No one answered.
Dad grabbed the paper.
“Where did you get this?””
Vanessa crossed her arms.
“I found it.””
“Where?””
“In the locked drawer in your office.””
His face changed.
“The drawer I keep my personal documents in?””
“Yes.””
My stomach dropped.
“So someone got inside your office.””
Dad looked at me.
“That means someone in this house had access.””
The words hung there.
Someone in this house.
Suddenly every conversation felt suspicious.
Every smile.
Every secret.
Madison.
Vanessa.
Even my father.
I hated that I was thinking it.
But I couldn’t stop.
Dad looked at Vanessa.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
She laughed softly.
“Would you have believed me?””
He didn’t answer.
Because they both knew.
Maybe he wouldn’t have.
Vanessa continued.
“You already decided I was guilty.””
“You used her money.””
“Yes.””
She admitted it again.
“But not the way you think.””
I stepped forward.
“Then explain.””
She looked at me.
“The day I transferred the money, I was trying to stop someone else from taking everything.””
I frowned.
“Who?””
She looked toward the hallway.
Toward the office.
“Someone who knew about the trust.””
My heart raced.
“Who?””
Vanessa didn’t answer.
Instead, she said:
“Your mother had enemies.””
I shook my head.
“My mother was a teacher.””
“People don’t need to be famous to have enemies.””
Dad looked uncomfortable.
“Vanessa.””
“What?””
She stared at him.
“You know it’s true.””
My father looked away.
And that scared me.
Because once again, he knew something.
“Dad.””
He rubbed his face.
“There are things I didn’t tell you.””
I felt anger rise.
“Everyone keeps saying that.””
“I was trying to protect you.””
“No.””
My voice cracked.
“You were protecting yourself.””
The silence afterward hurt.
Because I knew I was right.
Dad sat down.
“My company had problems.””
“What company?””
“You know I owned a small business.””
“Yes.””
“You don’t know how bad things got.””
I stared.
“And Mom knew?””
“Yes.””
“Vanessa knew?””
“Yes.””
“Who else?””
Dad didn’t answer.
Then his phone rang.
He looked at the screen.
His expression changed.
“What?””
He listened.
Then stood.
“Are you sure?””
A pause.
“Send me the address.””
He hung up.
“What happened?””
He looked at me.
“The bank found the account.””
My heart jumped.
“The money?””
He shook his head.
“No.””
“Then what?””
He looked terrified.
“The account where the money went.””
Vanessa stood.
“Where?””
Dad looked at both of us.
“It wasn’t under Emily’s name.””
“Whose was it?”” I asked.
He swallowed.
“Madison’s.””
The room went silent.
My stepsister.
The girl who had stood beside the Mustang smiling.
The girl who had looked away when I asked about my money.
“No,” I whispered.
Dad grabbed his keys.
“We need to talk to her.””
We found Madison upstairs.
She was sitting on her bed scrolling through her phone.
She looked up.
“Why are you all staring at me?””
Dad held up the bank report.
“Madison.””
Her face changed.
“What?””
“Why is the stolen money connected to your account?””
She froze.
Then immediately looked at Vanessa.
That was all it took.
Because the answer was written across her face.
Dad saw it too.
“Madison.””
She started crying.
“I didn’t know.””
“Didn’t know what?””
She looked at me.
And whispered:
“I didn’t know Mom was going to take it from you.””
My chest tightened.
“Take it?””
Madison covered her mouth.
“I thought she was borrowing it.””
Dad stepped closer.
“How long have you known?””
She looked down.
“A few months.””
I felt betrayed.
Not by Vanessa.
Not this time.
By the person who watched me lose everything and said nothing.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
Madison cried harder.
“Because Mom said if I told anyone…”
She stopped.
“What?””
She looked terrified.
“She said she would tell everyone what happened to your mother.””
The room went silent.
My father went pale.
“What does that mean?””
Madison shook her head.
“I don’t know.””
Then her phone buzzed.
She looked at the screen.
And immediately dropped it.
Dad picked it up.
A new message was open.
One sentence.
One name.
And a warning.
*Your mother’s secret dies if you talk.*
At the bottom was the sender.
Not Vanessa.
Not a stranger.
May you like
It was someone we all knew.
*Daniel Carter.*
