Chapter 6: The Mother’s Last Secret
My father stood frozen.
The phone shook slightly in his hand.
I had never seen him look that terrified.
Not when I fell off my bike as a child.
Not when my mother was sick.
Not even when he found out the money was gone.
But now?
Now he looked like he had just seen a ghost.
“Dad?””
He didn’t respond.
I walked closer.
“What does it say?””
Vanessa smiled.
“I think she deserves to know.””
Dad looked at her.
“Stop.””
“No.””
Vanessa crossed her arms.
“For years, everyone protected Emily from the truth.””
My heart raced.
“What truth?””
Dad finally looked at me.
His eyes were filled with regret.
“Emily…”
I stepped back.
“No.””
I shook my head.
“Don’t do that.””
“Do what?””
“Look at me like I’m about to break.””
The room was silent.
I pointed at the phone.
“Show me.””
Dad hesitated.
Then he handed it to me.
I read the document.
At first, the words didn’t make sense.
Then one sentence stood out.
*The trust shall remain protected from any individual who attempts to access the funds without Emily Carter’s direct authorization.*
I looked up.
“That doesn’t say I don’t get the money.””
“No,” Dad said quietly.
“It doesn’t.””
I kept reading.
Then I saw another paragraph.
A condition.
A requirement.
My hands went cold.
“Why does it say I need to meet with an attorney when I turn eighteen?””
Dad looked away.
Vanessa answered.
“Because your mother knew something.””
“What?””
“She knew someone might try to take the money.””
I looked at Vanessa.
“Someone like you?””
She didn’t react.
That scared me.
Dad took the phone back.
“Where did you get this?””
Vanessa smiled.
“From the same place I got access to the account.””
My blood ran cold.
“What?””
Dad’s face changed.
“You’re admitting it?””
Vanessa laughed.
“I’m admitting I knew where the paperwork was.””
“That’s not what I asked.””
She looked at him.
“You’re angry because I found something you ignored.””
Dad stepped forward.
“You forged documents.””
“I protected this family.””
“You destroyed it.””
The argument became a blur.
I stood there holding onto the edge of the desk.
Because something else bothered me.
Something Vanessa had said.
Your mother knew something.
I looked at my father.
“Dad.””
He stopped.
“What?””
“What did Mom know?””
He didn’t answer.
Vanessa did.
“She knew your father had been hiding money problems.””
Dad’s face changed.
“Vanessa.””
“She knew he was desperate.””
I stared at him.
“Is that true?””
Dad closed his eyes.
“Yes.””
The word hurt.
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because you were a child.””
“I’m not a child anymore.””
“I know.””
“Then tell me.””
He sat down.
And for the first time, my father looked older.
“When your mother got sick, I made mistakes.””
“What kind of mistakes?””
“I borrowed money.””
“How much?””
He didn’t answer.
Vanessa did.
“Almost fifty thousand dollars.””
I looked at my father.
“Did Mom know?””
“Yes.””
“And she still left me the trust?””
He nodded.
“Yes.””
“Why?””
Dad looked at the photo of my mother on his desk.
“Because she trusted me to protect you.””
The words hit me.
Because that was the exact thing he failed to do.
Then Vanessa’s phone rang.
She looked at the screen.
Her face changed.
Not fear.
Recognition.
She answered quietly.
“Hello?””
She walked away.
Dad noticed.
“What is she doing?””
I watched Vanessa turn her back.
Then I saw her expression.
She wasn’t talking to a friend.
She was negotiating.
When she hung up, she looked at us.
And smiled.
“Looks like this isn’t over.””
Dad stood.
“Who was that?””
Vanessa picked up her purse.
“Someone who can prove I had permission.””
“Permission from who?””
She looked at me.
And said the name that made my entire body go cold.
“Your mother.””
Then she walked out.
Leaving behind one question.
May you like
If my mother was protecting me…
Why did Vanessa have a document proving the opposite? :::
