Chapter 11: The Account My Mother Hid
Nobody spoke after the investigator left.
The paper stayed on the table.
Like it was something dangerous.
Like touching it would make everything real.
My father stared at the name.
I stared at him.
Because I knew.
Whatever happened next would change everything.
“Dad,” I said quietly.
He didn’t answer.
“Dad.””
He finally looked at me.
His eyes were filled with pain.
“I don’t understand.””
“Then explain.””
“I can’t.””
That answer hurt.
Because I was tired of secrets.
I was tired of adults deciding what I could handle.
“I need the truth.””
My father nodded slowly.
“You’re right.””
He sat down.
“When your mother died, she left instructions.””
“About the account?””
“Yes.””
“Why didn’t you tell me?””
“Because I thought it was connected to something dangerous.””
I frowned.
“What does that mean?””
He looked at Vanessa.
Then back at me.
“Your mother believed someone was watching our family.””
I remembered the letter.
Money can disappear.
People can lie.
My mother knew.
She knew something would happen.
“Who?””
Dad shook his head.
“She never said.””
Vanessa quietly spoke.
“She suspected.””
We looked at her.
“She suspected who?””
Vanessa looked uncomfortable.
“Daniel’s business partner.””
My father immediately stood.
“Don’t.””
“Emily deserves to know.””
“Not like this.””
“Why?””
He looked at her.
“Because you don’t know the whole story.””
I stood.
“Then everyone can stop saying that.””
The room became silent.
“Tell me.””
My father sat back down.
“His name was Victor.””
“Your partner?””
“Yes.””
“What happened?””
“He had financial problems.””
“How bad?””
“Bad enough that he started moving company money.””
I felt cold.
“And Mom found out?””
“Yes.””
Vanessa nodded.
“Rachel discovered documents.””
“What documents?””
“Proof that someone was stealing.””
My father looked at the floor.
“And she planned to expose him.””
I stared.
“So my mother was protecting me from him?””
“Yes.””
“Then why did the money go into her hidden account?””
Dad looked at the documents.
“I don’t know.””
The investigator returned later that afternoon with more information.
He placed a laptop on the table.
“We recovered the access records.””
Everyone gathered around.
A video played.
A security camera from the bank.
A person entering a private office.
The quality was poor.
But the figure was clear enough.
My heart stopped.
Because I recognized the jacket.
The walk.
The posture.
My father looked at the screen.
And whispered:
“That’s impossible.””
The person on the video was someone we knew.
Someone who had been in our house.
Someone who had been asking us to trust them.
The video continued.
The person opened the account.
Transferred the money.
Then left.
I looked at Vanessa.
She looked shocked.
Not guilty.
Shocked.
Then my father whispered the words none of us wanted to hear.
“That’s my brother.””
I froze.
“Your uncle?””
He nodded.
My entire family had been built on secrets.
And now one more person had entered the story.
Someone I had never suspected.
My father’s brother, Michael.
But then the investigator paused the video.
“There’s something else.””
He zoomed in.
A second person appeared behind Michael.
A person standing in the doorway.
Watching.
Waiting.
My father leaned closer.
“Who is that?””
The investigator looked at the screen.
“We don’t know.””
I stared.
Because the second person turned slightly.
And for a brief moment, their face appeared.
My father stepped back.
“No.””
“What?”” I asked.
His voice dropped.
“That person…”
He couldn’t finish.
“Who is it?””
He looked at me.
May you like
And said:
“Someone who was supposed to be dead.””
