Chapter 13: The Truth My Mother Buried

I held the photograph so tightly that the edges cut into my fingers.

My mother.

Standing beside Michael.

And behind them…

A woman.

A woman I had seen before.

Not in my memories.

Not in my dreams.

But in my house.

My hands started shaking.

“Dad.””

He looked at the photo.

His face had gone completely white.

“Who is she?””

He didn’t answer.

“Dad.””

He sat down slowly.

Like his legs couldn’t hold him anymore.

“That’s Rachel’s sister.””

I froze.

“My aunt?””

He nodded.

I stared at the picture again.

“My mother never told me she had a sister.””

“Because she didn’t want you involved.””

“Why?””

My father looked at Vanessa.

Then at the photograph.

“Because your aunt was the reason your mother disappeared.””

The word hit me.

Disappeared.

Not died.

Not gone.

Disappeared.

I looked at him.

“You said she died.””

His eyes filled with guilt.

“I believed she died.””

“That’s not an answer.””

He covered his face.

“Twelve years ago, your mother discovered something about Michael and her sister.””

“What?””

“They were moving money.””

My heart raced.

“The trust?””

He nodded.

“Not just yours.””

The room went silent.

“My mother had other accounts?””

“Yes.””

“Why?””

“She was preparing for something.””

I looked at the letter again.

The plan failed.

My mother had planned something.

Something that involved everyone.

Vanessa stepped closer.

“I need to tell you what I know.””

I looked at her.

For the first time, I didn’t know whether to hate her or listen.

She continued.

“Rachel called me three days before she disappeared.””

My father looked shocked.

“You never told me that.””

“Because Rachel asked me not to.””

“What did she say?””

Vanessa looked at me.

“She said if anything happened, I needed to protect Emily.””

I swallowed.

“Protect me from who?””

Vanessa looked at the photograph.

“From her own family.””

The words were terrifying.

My father shook his head.

“Rachel would have told me.””

“No,” Vanessa said quietly.

“She wouldn’t.””

He looked hurt.

“Why?””

“Because she thought you would try to fix it.””

That was the first time I saw my father understand.

My mother hadn’t hidden things because she didn’t trust him.

She hid them because she loved him.

The investigator, Robert, returned the next morning.

He had traced the hidden account.

“The money was moved again.””

My stomach dropped.

“Where?””

He placed a folder down.

“The account connected to Michael was only temporary.””

“Then whose account is it now?””

He opened the file.

I read the name.

And felt my entire body freeze.

Rachel Carter.

Again.

“My mother?””

Robert nodded.

“The transfers keep returning to accounts created under your mother’s identity.””

“That’s impossible.””

“Yes.””

He looked at me.

“Which means someone has access to documents and information only your mother would have known.””

My father whispered:

“Her sister.””

Everyone went quiet.

Robert nodded.

“We believe the person using Rachel’s identity may still have access to her private records.””

I looked at the photo.

The woman beside my mother.

My aunt.

The person who should have been family.

But somehow had become the center of everything.

That evening, Vanessa came to my room.

I almost told her to leave.

But I stopped.

“What do you want?””

She held something in her hand.

A small key.

“Your mother gave me this.””

I stared.

“Why?””

“She said I would need it if the truth ever came out.””

I took it.

“What does it open?””

Vanessa looked toward the hallway.

“The one place nobody has searched.””

“What place?””

She looked at me.

“Your mother’s old classroom.””

My heart stopped.

“She had a classroom?””

Vanessa nodded.

“She kept things there.””

“Things about this?””

“Yes.””

Before I could ask more, my phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

A woman’s voice came through.

“Emily.””

I froze.

Because I recognized the voice.

Not from memory.

From the video.

My hand tightened around the phone.

“Who is this?””

The woman was silent.

Then whispered:

“Your mother was trying to protect you from me.””

My breathing stopped.

“Who are you?””

A pause.

Then:

“I’m the reason Rachel had to disappear.””

The call ended.

I stared at the screen.

And slowly looked at Vanessa.

May you like

Because she was already crying.

“She found us.””
