Chapter 3: The Secret Behind the Recording
The principal’s office had never felt so quiet.
I sat in a chair beside the window while Mr. Harris, Officer Reyes, and Aaron Whitmore talked in low voices.
Nobody asked me to leave.
Nobody told me I was exaggerating.
For the first time that day, adults were actually listening.
But I still felt like I was waiting for something bad to happen.
Because I had learned something important.
When people with power made mistakes, they didn’t always apologize.
Sometimes they looked for someone else to blame.
Mr. Harris placed the tablet on his desk.
“Malik, I want you to know something.””
I looked up.
“You did nothing wrong.””
Those words almost hurt more than the humiliation.
Because I realized how badly I needed to hear them.
Officer Reyes leaned against the wall.
“Your classmate Maya helped preserve evidence.””
I nodded.
“She was brave.””
Aaron looked at me.
“So were you.””
I almost laughed.
“I was on the floor.””
Aaron shook his head.
“Being scared and still telling the truth is courage.””
Before I could answer, the office phone rang.
Mr. Harris picked it up.
“Principal Harris speaking.””
His face changed.
“What?””
He listened.
Then looked at Aaron.
“Are you sure?””
A pause.
Then he slowly placed the phone down.
“What happened?”” Officer Reyes asked.
Mr. Harris rubbed his forehead.
“The district office received an anonymous complaint.””
“About Mrs. Baxter?”” Aaron asked.
“No.””
He looked at me.
“About Malik.””
My stomach dropped.
“What?””
Mr. Harris picked up a folder.
“Someone reported that you threatened a teacher.””
I stared at him.
“That’s impossible.””
“I know.””
Officer Reyes frowned.
“Who filed it?””
Mr. Harris opened the folder.
The room became colder.
“Mrs. Baxter.””
My hands curled into fists.
“She’s lying.””
“I believe you,” Mr. Harris said.
“But we need proof.””
Aaron stepped closer.
“Actually, we might already have it.””
He opened his tablet again.
“There was something unusual about the hallway footage.””
He tapped the screen.
“The person who wrote the anonymous note knew exactly where the classroom camera blind spot was.””
I looked at him.
“What does that mean?””
“It means they either studied the security system…”
Aaron paused.
“Or they helped install it.””
Nobody spoke.
Officer Reyes looked toward the door.
“Are you saying someone inside the school planned this?””
Aaron didn’t answer.
He didn’t need to.
The silence did.
A few minutes later, Maya was brought into the office.
She looked nervous.
Mr. Harris softened his voice.
“Maya, we need to ask you about the note.””
She sat down.
“I didn’t write it.””
“We know.””
“Then why am I here?””
Aaron placed the paper on the desk.
“Because you were the only student who noticed the camera.””
Maya looked down.
“I saw Mrs. Baxter unplug it.””
“Did you tell anyone?””
She hesitated.
“No.””
“Why?””
Maya’s eyes moved toward me.
“Because last year my brother complained about Mrs. Baxter.””
The room went still.
“What happened?”” I asked.
Maya swallowed.
“She said he was lying.””
Aaron leaned forward.
“About what?””
Maya’s voice became quieter.
“About another student being bullied.””
Nobody moved.
“She always said kids needed consequences. She always said embarrassment teaches lessons.””
Officer Reyes exchanged a look with Mr. Harris.
Then the office door suddenly opened.
A secretary stood there holding an envelope.
“Principal Harris?””
“Yes?””
“This was just delivered for you.””
She handed it over.
Mr. Harris looked at the front.
His expression changed.
“What is it?”” Aaron asked.
The principal slowly turned the envelope around.
There was no name.
No return address.
Only one sentence written across the front.
*THE CAMERA WASN’T THE ONLY THING SHE TURNED OFF.*
Aaron opened it carefully.
Inside was a flash drive.
Everyone stared.
Officer Reyes whispered, “Where did that come from?””
Mr. Harris looked at me.
And I knew, before anyone said a word, that whatever was on that drive was about to change everything.
Aaron plugged it into the laptop.
A single video file appeared.
The title made my heart stop.
