The Camera Light Came Back On / Chapter 12 / 15

Chapter 12: The Truth About My Father

Nobody wanted to press play.

That was the strangest part.

We had spent hours searching for answers.

But now that the truth was sitting in front of us, nobody moved.

Because sometimes the truth is scarier than the mystery.

I looked at the file name.

*THE REAL REASON YOUR FATHER DISAPPEARED.*

My entire childhood was built around one belief.

My father left.

He chose to leave.

He chose not to come back.

But now everyone around me looked uncertain.

Like they knew there was another story.

Aaron finally clicked the file.

The video opened.

A younger version of my father appeared.

Not the tired man from the previous recording.

This was someone different.

Confident.

Determined.

He sat in a car, holding the camera.

“Malik,” he said.

“If you’re seeing this, then Amelia trusted someone enough to show you.””

I swallowed.

“I need you to know something.””

He looked down.

“I didn’t leave you.””

My eyes burned.

“I was forced away.””

The room went silent.

My father continued.

“After Amelia discovered the records, Gregory realized we were collecting evidence.””

A pause.

“He gave me a choice.””

I leaned closer.

“Either I disappear…”

His voice cracked.

“…or Malik becomes the next target.””

My hands went cold.

“He threatened me?””

Ethan nodded quietly.

“He threatened everyone who got close.””

My father continued.

“I wanted to fight.””

He looked away.

“But your mother made me promise.””

The video paused.

Then continued.

“She said protecting Malik mattered more than proving we were right.””

I felt tears forming.

My mother.

Even when everything was falling apart.

She was thinking about me.

My father looked into the camera.

“I know you may hate me.””

A long pause.

“I hated myself too.””

The video ended.

Nobody spoke.

For years, I had carried anger toward a man who might have been protecting me.

And suddenly I didn’t know what to feel.

Maya touched my shoulder.

“Malik.””

I wiped my face.

“I’m okay.””

I wasn’t.

But I wanted to be.

Then Aaron noticed something.

“Wait.””

He rewound the video.

“What?””

He paused near the end.

Behind my father, barely visible, was a person standing outside the car.

A woman.

Aaron zoomed in.

The image sharpened.

Everyone froze.

Sarah Whitmore.

Aaron’s sister.

“She was there,” he whispered.

Ethan nodded.

“She helped your father disappear.””

Aaron looked devastated.

“She lied to me.””

“Maybe she protected you too,” Ethan said.

Aaron shook his head.

“I trusted her.””

I looked at him.

“Then why did she hide?””

Nobody answered.

Then Officer Reyes’ radio crackled.

A message came through.

“Officer Reyes, we found something in the old science building.””

He grabbed the radio.

“What?””

The voice responded.

“A hidden room.””

Everyone looked at Ethan.

His face changed.

“The room where I found the files.””

Mr. Harris stood.

“That building has been closed for years.””

Ethan nodded.

“Exactly.””

Aaron grabbed his jacket.

“We need to go.””

We moved quickly through the school.

The old science building felt different at night.

Colder.

Forgotten.

Like the walls themselves were hiding memories.

When we reached the basement, Officer Reyes pointed toward a broken section of wall.

Behind it was a small room.

Inside were boxes.

Hundreds of files.

Student names.

Complaint records.

Evidence.

A hidden archive.

Mr. Harris whispered, “How could this exist under the school?””

Ethan walked inside.

“Because nobody was supposed to find it.””

I picked up one file.

My name was written on it.

*MALIK CARTER.*

My hands shook as I opened it.

Inside was a photograph.

Me.

At school.

Taken years earlier.

Underneath the picture was a note.

*Potential replacement subject.*

I looked at Aaron.

“What does this mean?””

Before he could answer, a voice came from behind us.

“You weren’t supposed to see that.””

Everyone turned.

A woman stood at the entrance.

Older.

Tired.

Terrified.

Aaron stopped breathing.

“Sarah?””

She looked at me.

Then at the file in my hands.

And whispered:

“Malik… I’m sorry.””

A pause.

Then she said the words that changed everything.

“Your mother didn’t discover Gregory’s plan.””

May you like

Her eyes filled with tears.

“She discovered what they planned to do to you.””
