Chapter 11: The Password My Mother Left Behind

Nobody trusted the silence after Aaron refused to answer.

Not anymore.

Silence had become another kind of warning.

I watched him stare at the computer screen.

At the password box.

At the message my mother had left behind.

Something only he and my mother would know.

My voice came out quieter than I expected.

“What did she tell you?””

Aaron looked at me.

“Malik…”

“No.””

I stood up.

“What did my mother tell you?””

The room became still.

Maya moved closer to me.

Ethan watched Aaron carefully.

Finally, Aaron sighed.

“Your mother contacted me six months ago.””

I froze.

“Six months?””

I felt something break inside.

“She talked to you?””

“Yes.””

“While she was sick?””

Aaron nodded.

“She knew she was running out of time.””

My hands shook.

“And you never told me?””

“I didn’t know how.””

I laughed bitterly.

“You didn’t know how to tell a kid that his mother was secretly investigating his school?””

Aaron looked away.

“She wanted to protect you.””

“Everyone says that.””

My voice cracked.

“Everyone keeps saying they protected me.””

I pointed at the files.

“But nobody told me anything.””

Nobody argued.

Because I was right.

Aaron lowered his eyes.

“Your mother asked me to watch over the investigation.””

“Why you?””

A painful expression crossed his face.

“Because Sarah was my sister.””

The room froze.

“You knew?””

Aaron nodded.

“I knew Gregory had involved her.””

“Then why help us?””

“Because I knew Sarah wasn’t the person everyone thought she was.””

Ethan stepped forward.

“Where is she now?””

Aaron hesitated.

That hesitation answered everything.

“You know.””

Aaron looked at him.

“Yes.””

Maya whispered, “Where?””

Aaron took a breath.

“She disappeared after your mother went to the hospital.””

My stomach dropped.

“Did Gregory take her?””

“I don’t know.””

The computer suddenly beeped.

Everyone turned.

The password box was still open.

But underneath it, new text appeared.

*HINT: THE FIRST PROMISE.*

Ethan looked confused.

“The first promise?””

Aaron stared at the screen.

Then slowly sat down.

“Your mother used that phrase.””

I looked at him.

“What does it mean?””

Aaron rubbed his forehead.

“When we were younger, Amelia and Sarah made a promise.””

“What promise?””

“That they would always protect children who couldn’t protect themselves.””

I looked at the notebook.

My mother’s handwriting.

Her complaint.

Her fight.

Everything suddenly connected.

“The password is about that?””

Aaron nodded.

He typed something.

The screen rejected it.

Wrong password.

He tried again.

Rejected.

Ethan stepped closer.

“Think.””

Aaron closed his eyes.

“What did Amelia always say?””

Nobody answered.

Then I remembered.

A memory.

I was eight years old.

I had fallen while riding my bike.

My knee was bleeding.

My mother had cleaned the wound.

I had asked her why she always helped people.

She smiled.

“Because everyone deserves someone who stands beside them.””

I looked at Aaron.

“The password is that.””

He stared at me.

“What?””

“She always said everyone deserves someone who stands beside them.””

Aaron typed.

The screen flashed.

*ACCESS GRANTED.*

Nobody breathed.

The video loaded.

My mother appeared again.

This time, she looked directly at the camera.

“Malik.””

Her voice trembled.

“If you’re watching this, I need you to understand something.””

She looked exhausted.

“But I need you to know I never stopped fighting for you.””

I covered my mouth.

“I discovered who Gregory was working for.””

Aaron leaned closer.

My mother continued.

“And it wasn’t another district employee.””

A pause.

“It was someone with the power to control everything.””

The video glitched.

Then her voice returned.

“Someone inside the school.””

Everyone looked at Mr. Harris.

He immediately shook his head.

“No.””

My mother continued.

“Someone who has been close to Malik for years.””

The room froze.

My heart started racing.

Someone close to me.

Someone I knew.

Someone who had been part of my life.

Then my mother said the name.

“Malik…”

The video cut for a second.

When it returned, her expression had changed.

She looked scared.

“The person you trust most…”

The screen went black.

A final audio clip played.

A whisper.

A single sentence.

“Your father wasn’t the one who left.””

I couldn’t breathe.

Then the video ended.

And underneath it appeared one recovered file.
