Chapter 2: The Witness Nobody Expected

The longest minute of my life was the one where nobody came to help.

I sat on the classroom floor, feeling smaller than I had ever felt before.

Mrs. Baxter walked back to her desk and picked up a clipboard.

She looked calm.

That bothered me more than her anger.

People who were angry sometimes lost control.

Mrs. Baxter looked like she knew exactly what she was doing.

“Class,” she said, “this is an important lesson.””

Nobody responded.

“Responsibility matters. Excuses do not.””

My stomach twisted.

I wasn’t an excuse.

My mother wasn’t an excuse.

But saying that out loud felt impossible.

Then Maya spoke.

Quietly.

“Mrs. Baxter?””

Everyone turned.

Our teacher looked annoyed.

“Yes, Maya?””

“Why did you unplug the camera?””

The room went completely silent.

Mrs. Baxter stared at her.

“I didn’t.””

Maya pointed toward the wall.

“We all saw you.””

A few students looked at the cable.

Mrs. Baxter’s face tightened.

“That camera has been malfunctioning all week.””

Maya shook her head.

“No, it hasn’t.””

A nervous feeling spread through the room.

I had never seen Maya challenge a teacher before.

Mrs. Baxter walked toward her desk.

“Be careful with your accusations.””

Maya lowered her eyes.

But she didn’t back down.

“I’m just saying what happened.””

Mrs. Baxter smiled.

It wasn’t a kind smile.

“Students who involve themselves in matters they don’t understand usually regret it.””

I saw Maya’s expression change.

Fear.

Real fear.

And suddenly I understood something.

Maya wasn’t just helping me.

She was risking something.

Before anyone could say more, the classroom door opened.

Everyone turned.

The principal, Mr. Harris, stood there.

Beside him was Officer Reyes.

And behind them was the man from the security room.

Mrs. Baxter’s face lost color.

“Principal Harris,” she said quickly.

“This is a misunderstanding.””

Mr. Harris looked at the camera.

Then at the cable.

Then at me.

“Malik,” he said softly, “stand up.””

My legs felt numb as I rose.

Officer Reyes looked at me with sympathy.

“You okay, son?””

I nodded even though I wasn’t.

Mrs. Baxter stepped forward.

“This student was refusing to cooperate with school requirements.””

Mr. Harris looked at her.

“Requirements?””

She nodded.

“The summer camp payment.””

The man in the doorway finally spoke.

“Interesting.””

Everyone looked at him.

Mrs. Baxter frowned.

“And you are?””

He stepped forward.

“My name is Aaron Whitmore.””

The room went quiet.

Even Mrs. Baxter looked surprised.

Mr. Harris seemed to recognize him.

“Mr. Whitmore?””

Aaron nodded.

“I was invited to review the school’s security systems after the district received complaints.””

Mrs. Baxter’s expression changed.

Complaints.

That word hung in the air.

Aaron looked at the camera.

“The recording was interrupted for three minutes and forty-two seconds.””

Mrs. Baxter immediately responded.

“The camera malfunctioned.””

Aaron looked at her.

“No.””

His voice was calm.

“It was manually disconnected.””

Nobody moved.

Mrs. Baxter crossed her arms.

“That’s an accusation.””

“No,” Aaron said.

“It’s a fact.””

He held up a small tablet.

“The camera recorded the moment before it went offline.””

Mrs. Baxter’s lips parted.

“You said it wasn’t recording.””

Aaron looked at her.

“I said the classroom camera was offline.””

He paused.

“The hallway camera was not.””

The room froze.

Mrs. Baxter looked toward the door.

For the first time, she looked afraid.

Mr. Harris took the tablet.

He watched the footage.

His expression changed with every second.

Finally, he looked at Mrs. Baxter.

“Why did you remove the camera?””

She didn’t answer.

“Mrs. Baxter?””

Still nothing.

Then she looked at me.

And something cold returned to her eyes.

“Because this child has been manipulating people.””

My chest tightened.

“What?””

She pointed at me.

“He wants sympathy. He wants special treatment.””

Maya stood up.

“That’s not true.””

Mrs. Baxter ignored her.

“Children learn when people stop making excuses for them.””

Officer Reyes stepped closer.

“Mrs. Baxter, did you force Malik to kneel?””

Silence.

That silence was her answer.

Mr. Harris closed his eyes.

“Everyone out of the room except staff.””

Students began leaving.

As I walked toward the door, Maya touched my arm.

“Malik.””

I looked at her.

“I’m sorry.””

“For what?””

She looked toward the camera.

“For not fixing it sooner.””

I didn’t understand.

Then she whispered something that made my blood run cold.

“Someone else knew she would do this.””

I stared at her.

“What do you mean?””

Maya reached into her backpack.

She pulled out a folded piece of paper.

“I found this in the hallway this morning.””

I opened it.

There were only five words written on it.

*WATCH THE CAMERA AT NOON.*

My hands went cold.

Because suddenly I realized something.

Maya hadn’t accidentally caught Mrs. Baxter.

Someone had planned for the truth to be discovered.

May you like

And they weren’t watching the camera to protect me.

They were waiting to see what Mrs. Baxter would do next.
