Chapter 12: The Note in the Abandoned Car

The note was delivered to Robert's office under police supervision.

I wasn't allowed to touch the original, but Detective Bennett sent us a photograph after the officers documented it.

The message contained only three sentences.

You wanted the truth, Michael. Now you have it.

Tell the police to stop looking for Daniel.

If you want Madison back, bring the original property deed to the old warehouse on Friday.

There was no signature.

No explanation.

No proof that Madison was even alive.

I read it until the words blurred.

Then I placed the phone on the table and stood.

“I'm going to that warehouse.””

“No, you're not,” Robert said immediately.

He rarely raised his voice, which made his response all the more forceful.

“This could be an attempt to lure you somewhere dangerous. The police need to handle it.””

“They have my stepdaughter.””

“And they're investigating her disappearance. You cannot risk compromising their response by going somewhere alone.””

I clenched my fists.

“She's eighteen. She's frightened. She went to meet her father because she thought she could get answers, and now she's missing.””

“I understand.””

“No, you don't!””

Robert remained still.

I regretted the outburst almost immediately, but the fear inside me was too powerful to contain.

Olivia stood beside the conference table, pale and silent.

I looked at her and forced myself to take a breath.

Robert was right.

If I rushed into a warehouse without knowing who was waiting, I could make everything worse. Madison needed a chance to be found safely, and Olivia needed protection from whoever had threatened her.

I sat down.

“Fine. What do we do?””

Robert called Detective Bennett and provided the note's contents. She told us the police would determine whether the warehouse was connected to Daniel and coordinate any further steps.

She also asked whether I possessed the original deed.

“Yes,” I replied.

“Keep it secured. Don't bring it anywhere in response to the note.””

“What if they hurt Madison?””

“We're treating the threat seriously, Mr. Carter. We need you to follow our instructions.””

I agreed.

After the call, Olivia sat beside me.

“Dad, what if Madison knew this would happen?””

I turned toward her.

“What do you mean?””

“What if she went there because she was part of the plan?””

I considered the possibility.

Madison had known about the loan. She had signed a document without understanding—or perhaps without wanting to understand—its full implications. She had demanded Olivia's car and repeated Vanessa's lies.

But she'd also warned us about Daniel's threats.

“I don't know,” I said honestly.

“We shouldn't assume anything until we know more.””

Olivia nodded.

“I just keep thinking about how she used to be.””

“So do I.””

For years, the girls had shared holidays, birthdays, and family dinners. They'd argued over bathroom time and borrowed each other's clothes. I'd watched them grow from awkward teenagers into young women who seemed, at least sometimes, to care about each other.

I didn't want to believe Madison had become an accomplice in something dangerous.

But I couldn't afford to let memories replace evidence.

Two hours later, Detective Bennett called.

“We've located a vehicle registered to Daniel Reed near the storage facility,” she said.

“We're checking nearby properties and reviewing available surveillance footage.””

“Any sign of Madison?””

“Not yet.””

I gripped the phone.

“Was there blood in Vanessa's car?””

“We haven't found evidence of an assault in the vehicle, but the investigation is ongoing.””

I exhaled shakily.

“Can I help?””

“For now, remain available. We may need additional information about the property documents.””

After the call, Robert suggested that I go home and rest. I refused.

I couldn't imagine sitting in my living room while Madison's location remained unknown.

Instead, Olivia and I stayed at the office.

At six that evening, Vanessa arrived.

Her face was swollen from crying, and she looked as if she'd aged ten years since the previous night.

“Have they found her?”” she asked.

“No,” I replied.

She sank into a chair.

“This is my fault.””

I didn't argue.

She stared at her hands.

“I kept telling myself Daniel was a good father underneath everything. I thought if I helped him once, he'd finally get his life together. I wanted Madison to have a relationship with him.””

“Did you tell her to meet him?””

“No.””

“Did you know about the warehouse?””

“No. I swear.””

I watched her carefully.

“Then why did she go?””

Vanessa covered her face.

“Because she heard me talking to Daniel last night. She said she wanted to confront him about the loan and the car. She told me she wasn't going to let him ruin everyone's lives.””

I felt a painful knot form in my chest.

Madison had finally understood that Daniel's promises came with a price.

But she might have realized it too late.

Vanessa looked at me through her tears.

“Michael, if something happens to her, I'll never forgive myself.””

I sat opposite her.

“Then help the police find her. Tell them everything, even the things you think will make you look bad.””

She nodded.

For the next hour, Detective Bennett questioned Vanessa about Daniel's movements, contacts, and possible hiding places. Vanessa provided the names of several friends and business associates, including the person she knew only as D. Mitchell.

She also admitted that Daniel had once asked her whether I kept original property documents in a safe at home.

That detail made the detective pause.

“Did you tell him where the safe was?””

Vanessa's eyes widened.

“No. I told him Michael kept important documents in his office, but I didn't know the exact location.””

“Did Daniel ever have access to your home office?””

“Yes. He visited twice when Madison was younger.””

“Did you observe him entering the office?””

Vanessa shook her head.

The detective wrote something down.

When she finished, she assured us that officers were continuing to search for Madison and Daniel.

Then she left.

Vanessa remained in the chair, staring at the floor.

“I know you hate me,” she whispered.

“I don't hate you.””

She looked up, surprised.

“I don't know what I feel anymore,” I continued.

“But hating you wouldn't help Madison.””

Tears slipped down her cheeks.

“I should have told you about the loan the first time Daniel mentioned it.””

“Yes.””

“I should never have let Madison believe you owed her anything.””

“Yes.””

“And I should have protected you from him.””

I held her gaze.

“You should have protected all of us.””

She nodded, unable to speak.

At eight fifteen, my phone rang.

Detective Bennett.

I answered immediately.

“Did you find her?””

“We have a development,” she said.

“A security camera near the storage facility captured Madison entering a vehicle with a man believed to be Daniel.””

My stomach tightened.

“Was she forced?””

“The footage doesn't clearly establish that. She appears to enter the vehicle voluntarily.””

Vanessa made a broken sound beside me.

I closed my eyes.

“Do you know where they went?””

“We're following several leads. We also recovered an item from the storage unit that may help establish where Daniel is heading.””

“What item?””

“A receipt for a short-term rental property outside Charlotte. The booking was made under an alias.””

I stood.

“Can you tell me the address?””

“We're working to verify it. Please don't attempt to go there yourself.””

“I won't.””

The detective paused.

“Mr. Carter, there's something else. The warehouse note was written on paper recovered from the same storage unit. The handwriting is consistent with a note found in Daniel's vehicle, but we haven't completed the examination.””

“Does that mean he wrote it?””

“It means we're investigating that possibility.””

I thanked her and ended the call.

Vanessa was shaking.

“If Madison went with him willingly, maybe she can persuade him to stop.””

“Or maybe he convinced her he was the only person she could trust.””

She looked at me helplessly.

I wanted to reassure her.

I couldn't.

At nine, Robert received an email from Detective Bennett asking us to review a photograph recovered from the storage facility.

It showed a desk covered in papers.

Among them was a copy of the forged property transfer agreement, a printed image of my house, and a photograph of Olivia outside her apartment.

But the most disturbing item was a handwritten list.

At the top were the words:

*PHASE TWO — CARTER FAMILY.*

Below them were three names.

Michael Carter.

Olivia Carter.

Madison Reed.

Beside Olivia's name was a note about her apartment and daily routine.

Beside Madison's was a single word.

*LEVERAGE.*

I felt physically sick.

Then I noticed a fourth name at the bottom of the page.

It wasn't Vanessa.

It wasn't Daniel.

It was Diane, Olivia's mother.

And beside her name, someone had written:

*SHE KNOWS WHERE THE ORIGINAL IS.*

I stared at the photograph.

Whatever Daniel had planned, it hadn't begun with the birthday cars or the loan application.

Someone had been building this scheme for years.

And now, with Madison missing and Olivia threatened, I finally understood the terrible possibility we'd all overlooked.

The forged documents might have been designed to take my house.

But the real target could have been something far more valuable.

The truth about who had owned it all along.
