Chapter 10: The Name I Never Expected

For a moment, I thought Vanessa had lost her mind.

“Say that again,” I demanded.

She wiped her cheeks with both hands.

“Olivia's mother. Daniel told me she was involved.””

I stared at the forged property transfer agreement lying on Robert's desk.

My first wife, Diane, and I had divorced eleven years earlier. Our marriage had ended painfully, but not viciously. We'd argued over custody arrangements, sold the house we'd shared, and eventually reached a settlement that allowed Olivia to grow up without being forced to choose between us.

Diane had never tried to destroy me.

She'd never threatened my business, demanded money beyond our agreement, or used Olivia as a weapon.

“That's impossible,” I said.

Vanessa shook her head.

“I'm telling you what Daniel told me.””

Robert raised a hand.

“Before we draw conclusions, let's establish exactly what you know, Mrs. Carter. Did Diane give you this document?””

“No.””

“Did you speak to her about it?””

“No.””

“Then how do you know she was involved?””

Vanessa looked down.

“Daniel said she helped him obtain an old copy of Michael's signature.””

I felt a chill run through me.

“An old copy from where?””

“He didn't say.””

Robert leaned forward.

“Did Daniel explain why your husband's first wife would participate in something like this?””

Vanessa shook her head.

“He said they had an understanding.””

I stood and walked to the window.

Outside, traffic moved along the street as if nothing had changed. Somewhere, a child was probably opening a birthday present. A family was probably arguing about dinner. Ordinary life continued while mine unraveled one revelation at a time.

I turned back.

“Vanessa, I want you to understand something. If you're lying to protect Daniel, this is your last opportunity to tell the truth.””

“I'm not lying.””

“Then give us something we can verify.””

She opened her handbag and removed a folded sheet of paper.

“Daniel gave me this with the transfer agreement.””

Robert took it and examined the contents.

It was a printed email chain between Daniel and an address I didn't recognize. The sender's name was listed as D. Mitchell.

The messages discussed obtaining a copy of my property deed and preparing documents that would make a loan application appear legitimate.

One line had been highlighted in yellow.

The signature sample is available. Once the transfer agreement is established, the guarantee should be easier to defend.

I felt sick.

Robert read the sentence again.

“Do you know who D. Mitchell is?”” he asked.

Vanessa shook her head.

“Daniel told me he was a consultant.””

“A consultant for what?””

“He handles financial paperwork.””

Robert gave her a hard look.

“That's not a meaningful answer.””

“I don't know anything else!””

Her voice cracked.

I sat down.

“Did Diane's name appear anywhere in these emails?””

Vanessa hesitated.

“No. Daniel told me about her separately.””

“So all you have is Daniel's claim.””

“Yes.””

I looked at Robert.

“Can we verify the email?””

“We can preserve it and provide it to the investigator. We shouldn't assume the sender's identity is genuine.””

He photographed the documents and placed them in a separate folder.

Then he turned toward Vanessa.

“Did you receive any money from Daniel?””

“No.””

“Did he promise you anything?””

She pressed her lips together.

“Answer the question,” I said.

“He said he'd pay me back for everything I'd spent helping Madison. He also said he'd make sure she had enough money for college.””

“That isn't what I asked.””

Vanessa's eyes filled.

“He said he'd give me fifty thousand dollars if the loan went through.””

I stared at her.

“So you weren't simply trying to help your daughter. You were going to receive money too.””

“I've spent six years supporting Madison while you spent money on Olivia!””

“You lived in my house without paying the mortgage. I paid for Madison's education, medical bills, activities, and almost everything else she needed.””

“That doesn't mean I owe you gratitude for every dollar!””

“No,” I replied.

“It means you don't get to pretend I abandoned your daughter because I wouldn't finance her father's debts.””

Vanessa fell silent.

Robert closed the folder.

“Mrs. Carter, I strongly recommend that you give the investigator everything you have, including any messages from Daniel. Do not delete or alter anything.””

She nodded.

Then she looked at me.

“Michael, I know I've done terrible things. But you have to believe me about Diane. I don't know whether she was involved. I'm only repeating what Daniel said.””

That was the first time she'd acknowledged the possibility that Daniel had lied to her, too.

I didn't forgive her.

But I listened.

After Vanessa left, Robert and I contacted Detective Bennett and arranged to provide the documents. She told us the investigation was expanding to include the forged property agreement and the possibility that additional records had been falsified.

I then called Diane.

She answered after two rings.

“Michael? Is Olivia all right?””

“She's fine.””

“Then what's wrong?””

I took a breath.

“I need to ask you something difficult. Have you had any contact with Daniel Reed in the last few years?””

Silence.

Then Diane said, “Why?””

“Because he's made a claim involving a forged document that supposedly transfers part of my house to Vanessa. He told her you helped him obtain my signature.””

Diane's voice changed immediately.

“What?””

“I don't believe him. But I need to know whether you've spoken to him.””

“Michael, I haven't spoken to Daniel in years. The last time I saw him was at Olivia's high school graduation party, and even then we barely exchanged a greeting.””

“Have you ever given him a copy of my signature?””

“Absolutely not.””

I closed my eyes.

“I didn't think you had.””

“Michael, what's going on?””

I explained the fraudulent loan, the guarantee, and the property transfer agreement.

By the time I finished, Diane was breathing hard.

“This is insane,” she said.

“I would never help someone steal your house.””

“I know.””

“No, listen to me. If someone is using my name, I want to know who and why.””

“I'm working with an attorney and a detective.””

“Good. I'll cooperate with them. But there's something you need to remember.””

“What?””

“When we divorced, the settlement included copies of financial documents from the house we sold. Some of those records had your signature.””

I sat upright.

“What records?””

“Mortgage paperwork. Property disclosures. Documents the attorneys exchanged during the sale.””

I thought back to the divorce.

Diane had kept her files in a box in her home office. I'd never considered those papers dangerous.

“Could someone have accessed them?”” I asked.

“I suppose, but I haven't shared them with anyone.””

She paused.

“Michael, do you remember the storage unit we rented during the divorce?””

“Yes.””

“I gave the key to my sister for safekeeping when I moved apartments. She helped me move everything into my new house.””

I frowned.

“Why are you telling me this?””

“Because Daniel used to know my sister through a mutual friend. I don't know whether that matters, but if someone got hold of my old files, that's one possible route.””

I thanked her and ended the call.

For the first time all day, I felt as though we were moving toward an explanation rather than another accusation.

Then my phone buzzed.

A message from an unknown number.

It contained a photograph of Olivia leaving her apartment that morning.

Underneath it were seven words.

*Tell Michael to stop digging, or Olivia pays.*

My blood turned to ice.

I called Olivia immediately.

She answered, sounding confused.

“Dad?””

“Where are you?””

“I'm at home. Why?””

“Lock your door. Don't go outside until I call you back.””

“What happened?””

I sent her the photograph.

There was a long silence.

Then she whispered, “Dad, someone was sitting in a car across the street from my apartment yesterday.””

I gripped the phone.

“Did you see who it was?””

“No. But I took a picture of the license plate because I thought it was strange.””

“Send it to me. Right now.””

A minute later, the image arrived.

I forwarded it to Detective Bennett.

Then I looked at Robert.

“This isn't just about money anymore.””

He nodded grimly.

“No. And from this point forward, Olivia's safety comes first.””

I stared at the threatening message on my screen.

Whoever had sent it knew where my daughter lived.

May you like

And whoever it was had just made one mistake.

They'd given me a reason to stop negotiating and start fighting.
