Chapter 11: The Threat Against My Daughter
Olivia arrived at Robert's office less than an hour later.
She wore jeans, a gray sweater, and the expression of someone trying desperately not to panic.
I met her in the lobby.
“Are you okay?””
She nodded, then immediately shook her head.
“I don't know.””
I pulled her into a hug.
For several seconds, she held on tightly, just as she'd done when she was little and thunder frightened her during summer storms.
“I'm here,” I whispered.
“You're safe.””
“Dad, who would do this?””
“I don't know yet.””
She pulled away and showed me the photograph she'd taken of the suspicious vehicle.
The black sedan's license plate was partially obscured by glare, but several characters were visible.
Detective Bennett had already asked us not to investigate the vehicle ourselves. She said officers would review the image and determine whether it could be connected to Daniel or anyone else involved.
Robert arranged for Olivia to stay with a trusted friend while the threat was assessed. We also discussed basic precautions: avoid posting her location online, preserve suspicious messages, and contact law enforcement immediately if anyone approached her.
Olivia sat beside me in the conference room.
“Do you think Daniel sent the message?””
“I don't know.””
“But he wanted to steal my car.””
“He planned to sell it, according to the documents we've seen.””
She looked down at her hands.
“I used to think he was just a disappointing father. He'd promise to visit Madison, then cancel. He'd say he was going to help with school expenses, then disappear when the bills arrived.””
“I'm sorry.””
She gave a small, bitter laugh.
“Why are you apologizing?””
“Because you've been caught in the middle of this.””
“That's not your fault.””
I squeezed her hand.
“I should have noticed something was wrong sooner.””
Olivia looked at me steadily.
“Dad, you trusted your wife. That's not a crime.””
The words reminded me of something Robert had said earlier: trust wasn't a weakness, but ignoring evidence once it appeared could become one.
I nodded.
Then the conference room door opened.
Detective Bennett entered with another officer. She carried a folder and a small tablet.
“We've made some preliminary progress,” she said.
“The threatening message is being treated seriously. We also found information that may help establish who had access to the forged documents.””
I leaned forward.
“What did you find?””
“The email account used to submit the loan application was created several months ago. The recovery phone number appears to have belonged to Daniel Reed at the time.””
“So it was his account?””
“It suggests a connection, but we're still verifying the records.””
She turned the tablet toward us.
A photograph showed the black sedan Olivia had captured outside her apartment.
“We're checking the vehicle information. In the meantime, have either of you received additional messages?””
“No,” I said.
Olivia shook her head.
The detective nodded.
“Good. Please continue preserving everything. Don't respond to the sender.””
She then asked Olivia about Madison's messages regarding the Mercedes.
Olivia handed over screenshots.
Detective Bennett studied them carefully.
“Did Madison ever explain who suggested the arrangement?””
“She said her mother had an idea,” Olivia replied.
“She wouldn't explain more.””
“Would you be willing to provide a formal statement?””
“Yes.””
The detective made a note.
After she left, I sat quietly with Olivia while Robert reviewed the next steps with us.
Then Olivia's phone rang.
Madison.
Olivia looked at me.
“Should I answer?””
“It's your decision.””
She hesitated, then accepted the call on speaker.
“Hello?””
Madison sounded breathless.
“Olivia, please don't hang up.””
“What do you want?””
“I need to tell you something.””
Olivia's expression hardened.
“Is this about the car?””
“No. It's about Dad.””
“Your dad or mine?””
“Mine.””
Madison took a shaky breath.
“He says he's leaving town. He told Mom that everything has gone wrong because Michael wouldn't cooperate.””
Olivia glanced at me.
“Why are you telling us?””
“Because he said if Michael keeps talking to the police, he'll make sure you regret it.””
My stomach tightened.
“Madison,” I said, leaning toward the phone, “did Daniel send the threatening message?””
“I don't know.””
“Did you know someone was watching Olivia's apartment?””
“No! I swear!””
Her voice broke.
“Michael, I didn't know he was going to threaten her. I thought he just wanted money.””
I believed she was frightened.
But fear wasn't proof of innocence.
“Where is your father now?”” I asked.
“I don't know. He left Mom's sister's house this morning.””
“Did he tell you where he was going?””
Madison hesitated.
Then she whispered, “He said he had to meet someone who could get him out of this.””
“Who?””
“I heard him say the name Mitchell.””
Robert immediately looked up.
I felt my pulse quicken.
D. Mitchell.
The name on the email chain.
“Madison, did he say anything else?””
“He said the meeting was at a storage facility outside town. He told Mom to bring him the original papers.””
“What original papers?””
“I don't know. He was talking about the property transfer.””
I exchanged a glance with Robert.
“Do you know the address?”” I asked.
“No. But I saw a receipt in his car yesterday. It had the storage company's name on it.””
“Can you tell me the name?””
Madison gave it to us.
Robert wrote it down and immediately contacted Detective Bennett. We did not attempt to visit the facility ourselves.
After the call ended, Olivia stared at her phone.
“I can't believe this.””
I put an arm around her shoulders.
“You did the right thing by sharing those messages.””
She swallowed.
“Do you think Madison is telling the truth?””
“I think we need to verify what she says.””
For the next hour, we waited for the detective's response.
Then Robert's phone rang.
He listened for several seconds before speaking.
“Understood. We'll preserve everything and wait for your instructions.””
He ended the call and looked at us.
“Detective Bennett confirmed that the storage facility is relevant to their investigation. Officers are handling it.””
“Did they find Daniel?”” I asked.
“Not yet.””
I stood and walked to the window.
The sky outside had turned gray. Rain streaked the glass, blurring the traffic below.
Then my phone rang.
Vanessa.
I answered.
“What's happened?””
She was crying.
“Michael, I need your help.””
“Where are you?””
“At my sister's house.””
“Is Madison with you?””
“No. She went to meet Daniel.””
I felt my entire body tense.
“What do you mean, she went to meet him?””
“She said she needed answers. I tried to stop her, but she took my car keys and left.””
“When?””
“Twenty minutes ago.””
I looked at Robert.
He immediately called Detective Bennett while I continued speaking to Vanessa.
“Did she tell you where she was going?””
“She said she knew where Daniel was staying.””
“Where?””
“I don't know!””
Her voice rose into a sob.
“Michael, please. She's my daughter. I can't lose her.””
I closed my eyes briefly.
For six years, I'd tried to be a father to Madison.
Now she was walking toward the same man who'd tried to use my identity, endanger my home, and threaten Olivia.
“Vanessa,” I said, forcing my voice to remain steady, “listen carefully. Don't go looking for her yourself. Tell the detective everything you know, and keep your phone available.””
“What if he hurts her?””
“We're going to do everything we can to keep her safe.””
I ended the call and turned toward Robert.
He had already reached the detective.
A minute later, he hung up.
“Officers are checking the location Madison mentioned. They've asked us to stay here until they confirm what's happening.””
I paced the room.
Olivia watched me with frightened eyes.
“Dad, she's still a kid.””
“She turned eighteen last month.””
“She was manipulated by her father.””
“I know.””
“And if something happens to her—”
“Olivia.”” I stopped and took her hands.
“Whatever happens next, none of this is your fault. Do you understand?””
She nodded.
But I could see the guilt forming in her eyes.
Then Robert's phone rang again.
He answered, listened, and slowly lowered himself into his chair.
“What is it?”” I demanded.
He looked at me.
“The police found Vanessa's car.””
“Where's Madison?””
Robert swallowed.
“They found the vehicle abandoned near the storage facility.””
My heart slammed against my ribs.
“Was she inside?””
“No.””
“Then where is she?””
He looked down at the phone.
“The officers found something else in the driver's seat.””
May you like
“What?””
“A note addressed to you.””
