Chapter 6: The Evidence Hidden for Seventeen Years

The room changed instantly.

It wasn’t curiosity anymore.

It was suspicion.

I looked at my father.

The man I had spent years believing was dead.

The man who had just returned with answers.

Now I wondered what questions he had avoided.

“Police?”” I whispered.

My father closed his eyes.

“Emily.””

I stepped back.

“No.””

My voice shook.

“No, don’t do that.””

“Do what?””

“Look at me like I’m still your little girl.””

The words hurt both of us.

“I need the truth.””

He nodded slowly.

“You deserve that.””

Victoria watched him carefully.

Almost like she was waiting.

Waiting for him to fail.

Daniel stepped forward.

“Mr. Carter, were you investigated?””

My father looked at him.

“Yes.””

The answer surprised everyone.

“But I was never charged.””

Victoria immediately interrupted.

“Because you disappeared before they could.””

My father turned toward her.

“Because you framed me.””

My heart raced.

“What were you accused of?””

My father looked down.

“Fraud.””

The word felt impossible.

My father.

The man who built everything.

A fraud?

“I don’t understand.””

He walked toward the table and sat down.

“Seventeen years ago, millions of dollars disappeared from Bellavita.””

Daniel looked at the documents.

“Your mother?””

My father nodded.

“She moved the money.””

Victoria laughed.

“You’re still blaming me?””

“You forged my signature.””

“And you expect anyone to believe that?””

My father looked at me.

“I had proof.””

“Where?””

His face became serious.

“That’s why I came back.””

He looked toward the entrance.

“I recovered the original evidence.””

Daniel frowned.

“Where is it?””

My father reached into his jacket.

He pulled out a small flash drive.

“This contains everything.””

Victoria’s face changed.

Only for a moment.

But it was enough.

Daniel noticed.

“What’s wrong?””

“Nothing.””

“No.””

His voice became firm.

“You recognized that.””

Victoria said nothing.

My father looked at me.

“That drive proves what happened.””

I stared at it.

A tiny piece of plastic.

Seventeen years of secrets hidden inside.

Then suddenly, the lights flickered.

Everyone looked up.

The restaurant became dark for three seconds.

Then the emergency lights came on.

Richard looked toward the office.

“That’s strange.””

Daniel immediately looked alert.

“What?””

“The security system just went offline.””

My father stood.

“No.””

His voice was low.

“What?””

He looked toward Victoria.

“She knows.””

Victoria didn’t move.

Daniel noticed.

“Who?””

My father looked at the office upstairs.

“The person who has been trying to destroy the evidence all these years.””

A loud crash came from the second floor.

Everyone froze.

Then footsteps echoed above us.

Slow.

Heavy.

Someone was walking through the private office.

Daniel looked at the stairs.

“I thought everyone left.””

My father’s face turned pale.

“So did I.””

The footsteps stopped.

Then a shadow appeared at the top of the staircase.

A man slowly walked down.

He wasn’t a stranger.

Victoria looked at him.

And smiled.

“Finally.””

My blood went cold.

Because I recognized him.

Not from memory.

Not from photographs.

From the news.

The man walking toward us was one of Chicago’s most powerful attorneys.

And he was carrying a folder with my name on it.

Daniel whispered:

“That’s impossible.””

I looked at him.

“Who is he?””

Daniel didn’t answer.

My father did.

“He’s the reason I disappeared.””

The attorney stopped at the bottom of the stairs.

He looked directly at me.

Then he opened the folder.

“Emily Carter.””

May you like

My name sounded like a warning.

“I believe it’s time you learned what your father really did.””
