Chapter 2: The Man Everyone Waited For

The entire restaurant changed the moment he entered.

The whispers started first.

Then the silence.

I was still standing beside the broken plate when I saw the expression on Victoria’s face disappear.

For the first time that night, she looked uncertain.

The man walking toward us was tall, wearing a dark suit with no tie. He wasn’t dressed like someone trying to impress people.

He looked like someone who already knew everyone was watching.

Richard immediately stepped forward.

“Mr. Whitmore.””

My heart stopped.

Whitmore.

The same last name.

The man looked around the room.

Then his eyes landed on me.

On my red cheek.

On the broken plate.

On the sauce stains covering my uniform.

His expression changed.

Not dramatically.

Not loudly.

But enough.

“Mom,” he said quietly.

Victoria stood up.

“Daniel, finally.””

She walked toward him like nothing happened.

“I was just dealing with an employee who clearly doesn’t understand customer service.””

Daniel didn’t look at her.

He kept looking at me.

“What happened?””

Victoria laughed.

“Don’t make this into something it isn’t.””

Daniel’s voice became colder.

“What happened?””

Nobody answered.

The young customer with the phone slowly lowered it.

I expected him to step forward.

Instead, fear stopped me.

People like Victoria always won.

People like me always lost.

I looked down.

“It was my mistake.””

The words came out before I could stop them.

Daniel frowned.

“Your mistake?””

I nodded.

“The food was late.””

Victoria smiled.

“Exactly.””

Daniel looked at the plate on the floor.

Then at my face.

“Did my mother hit you?””

The room became silent again.

I felt every eye on me.

I could lie.

I could protect my job.

I could pretend it didn’t happen.

But my cheek still burned.

“Yes.””

A small sound escaped from someone nearby.

Victoria immediately turned.

“Emily, be careful what you accuse people of.””

Daniel looked at his mother.

“Did you hit her?””

Victoria crossed her arms.

“I barely touched her.””

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

“That wasn’t the question.””

She looked offended.

“You’re taking the side of a waitress over your own mother?””

“I’m asking you a question.””

The confidence in her voice disappeared.

For the first time, she looked like someone who couldn’t control the room.

Richard stepped in quickly.

“Mr. Whitmore, I’m sure we can handle this privately.””

Daniel turned.

“And who are you?””

“I’m the manager.””

“The manager who watched an employee get hit?””

Richard opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

Daniel looked disappointed.

Not angry.

That somehow felt worse.

“I asked a simple question.””

Richard looked away.

“I was trying to protect the restaurant.””

Daniel gave a humorless laugh.

“No. You were protecting the person who might leave a bigger tip.””

Nobody spoke.

Victoria’s face turned red.

“Daniel, you’re embarrassing me.””

He finally looked at her.

“Mom, you embarrassed yourself.””

A few customers looked up from their tables.

The young man with the phone continued recording.

Victoria noticed.

“Daniel, make him delete that.””

“No.””

Her eyes widened.

“What?””

“No one is deleting anything.””

The confidence she had carried all night was gone.

I watched as she stared at her son like she was seeing a stranger.

Daniel walked closer to me.

“I’m sorry.””

I looked at him.

“You don’t have to apologize for her.””

“Yes, I do.””

His eyes moved toward the broken plate.

“This should never have happened.””

I didn’t know what to say.

People like Daniel Whitmore didn’t usually apologize to people like me.

Then he did something even stranger.

He picked up his phone.

He made a call.

“Get me the ownership records for Bellavita.””

My stomach dropped.

Ownership records?

Richard suddenly looked nervous.

“Mr. Whitmore, there’s no need for that.””

Daniel ignored him.

“I need them tonight.””

Victoria stared.

“Daniel, what are you doing?””

He ended the call.

Then he looked at me.

“I need to ask you something.””

“What?””

“How long have you worked here?””

“Almost three years.””

“And has anything like this happened before?””

I hesitated.

That hesitation told him everything.

His eyes narrowed.

“Emily.””

I looked down.

“There have been other things.””

Richard immediately stepped forward.

“Don’t listen to her. She’s upset.””

Daniel turned toward him.

“Other things?””

Richard didn’t answer.

And that was when Daniel’s phone buzzed.

He looked at the screen.

His face changed.

The message was only a few lines long.

But whatever he read made him slowly look up at Richard.

Then at the restaurant.

Then at me.

“Emily,” he said.

“Yes?””

He held the phone tightly.

“Do you know who actually owns this restaurant?””

I shook my head.

“No.””

Daniel looked toward his mother.

May you like

Then whispered:

“Because my mother just assaulted the person who has been paying her salary for the last two years.””
