Chapter 11: The Woman Who Knew the Truth

I should have told someone.

I knew that.

Every instinct told me not to go.

Not alone.

Not after everything I had learned.

But seventeen years of lies had created a hunger inside me.

I needed answers.

Not from documents.

Not from accusations.

From the person who was there.

Sarah Bennett.

The woman who knew what happened.

I looked around the restaurant.

Everyone was distracted.

Daniel was arguing quietly with Andrew.

My father was staring at the old police report.

Victoria was watching all of us.

Especially me.

That scared me.

Because I knew she noticed everything.

I slipped my phone into my pocket.

Then I walked toward the exit.

“Emily.””

I stopped.

My father’s voice.

I turned.

He was looking at me.

Like he already knew.

“Where are you going?””

I forced myself to stay calm.

“I need some air.””

He studied my face.

“You’re lying.””

I froze.

For a moment, he looked exactly like the father I remembered.

The one who used to know when I was hiding something.

“Dad…”

He stepped closer.

“Don’t go alone.””

I swallowed.

“Then tell me where to go.””

He didn’t answer.

Because he couldn’t.

Not yet.

And that hurt.

“I need to do this.””

His eyes filled with regret.

“I know.””

I walked out.

The meeting place was a small coffee shop twenty minutes away.

Nothing fancy.

Nothing suspicious.

Almost too normal.

That made me nervous.

I sat near the window.

Five minutes passed.

Then ten.

I started thinking maybe it was a trap.

Then the door opened.

An older woman walked in.

She looked around.

Then her eyes found mine.

“Emily Carter?””

I stood.

“Yes.””

She took a deep breath.

“My name is Sarah Bennett.””

I nodded.

“I know.””

She sat across from me.

For a moment, she just looked at me.

“You look like him.””

My throat tightened.

“Like my father?””

She nodded.

“Especially your eyes.””

I looked down.

“Tell me the truth.””

Sarah became quiet.

Then she reached into her bag.

She pulled out a small notebook.

“I kept this for seventeen years.””

She placed it on the table.

“What is it?””

“The real financial records.””

I stared.

“Why didn’t you release them?””

Her face changed.

Fear.

“I tried.””

“What happened?””

She looked toward the window.

“Someone came after me.””

My heart started racing.

“Who?””

She looked back at me.

“Victoria.””

I wasn’t surprised.

But hearing it still hurt.

“She threatened you?””

Sarah nodded.

“She told me if I exposed her, she would make sure Emily never knew her father.””

I felt tears building.

“She knew I was looking for him?””

“She knew everything.””

I opened the notebook.

Inside were handwritten notes.

Dates.

Amounts.

Names.

My father’s name appeared.

Then Victoria’s.

I looked up.

“She stole from Bellavita.””

Sarah nodded.

“Yes.””

“Then why did my father disappear?””

Sarah hesitated.

That hesitation scared me.

“What?””

She looked at me.

“Because your father found out something worse.””

“What?””

She leaned closer.

“Your mother wasn’t working alone.””

The room suddenly felt colder.

“What do you mean?””

Sarah opened the notebook to the final page.

There was one name written there.

A name I recognized.

A name I had heard earlier that night.

Andrew Vale.

My heart stopped.

“The lawyer?””

Sarah nodded.

“He helped Victoria hide everything.””

I stared at the page.

“No.””

Sarah grabbed my hand.

“Emily, listen to me.””

Her voice became urgent.

“Your father didn’t disappear because of the money.””

“Then why?””

She looked terrified.

“Because he discovered they were planning to take control of the entire company.””

I shook my head.

“But Andrew is helping us now.””

Sarah’s expression changed.

“That’s what makes him dangerous.””

I felt my blood run cold.

Before I could respond, my phone rang.

Daniel.

I answered immediately.

“Hello?””

His voice was urgent.

“Emily, where are you?””

I looked at Sarah.

“Why?””

“Because we found something.””

“What?””

A pause.

Then Daniel said:

“Andrew was never helping us.””

My breathing stopped.

“What do you mean?””

Daniel’s voice became quieter.

“He just left.””

I frowned.

“Left where?””

“He took the original evidence.””

I stood up.

“What?””

Then Daniel said the words that made my entire body freeze.

May you like

“Emily…”

“He took your father.””
