Chapter 5: The Secret Ownership
The note felt heavier than paper should have been.
I held it with both hands, afraid that if I let go, everything would disappear again.
My entire life had been a story someone else wrote for me.
And now I was discovering the author was the person I trusted most.
My father sat at the nearest table.
He looked nothing like the man from my childhood photos.
Time had changed him.
Pain had changed him.
But he was still my father.
And somehow, that made everything hurt worse.
“Tell me everything,” I said.
Victoria immediately shook her head.
“No.””
Everyone looked at her.
She looked around the restaurant.
The powerful woman from earlier was gone.
Now she looked like someone cornered.
Daniel crossed his arms.
“Why not?””
Victoria stared at him.
“Because you don’t understand.””
Daniel laughed quietly.
“No, Mom. I understand perfectly.””
My father looked at Victoria.
“You told her I was dead.””
Victoria’s face tightened.
“You disappeared.””
“I was forced to.””
“You ran.””
“No.””
His voice became stronger.
“You destroyed my company and tried to make sure Emily inherited nothing.””
The words hit me.
“Inherited?””
My father looked at me.
“Yes.””
He took a deep breath.
“When I built Bellavita, I didn’t just create a restaurant.””
He looked around.
“I created a trust.””
Daniel nodded.
“I saw the documents.””
My father continued.
“The trust was designed so that when you turned twenty-five, ownership would transfer to you.””
I stared at him.
“But I never got anything.””
“Because the documents were hidden.””
My eyes moved toward Victoria.
She didn’t deny it.
That was the worst part.
“Why?”” I whispered.
Victoria finally spoke.
“Because you weren’t ready.””
I looked at her.
“You stole my inheritance because you thought I wasn’t ready?””
She stepped closer.
“You were seventeen. You were emotional. You didn’t understand business.””
I laughed.
A broken laugh.
“So you decided for me?””
“I protected what your father built.””
My father stood.
“No.””
His voice shook with anger.
“You protected what you wanted.””
Victoria’s expression changed.
For the first time, she looked exposed.
“You have no idea what I sacrificed.””
My father stared at her.
“I sacrificed my family.””
The words hung in the air.
I looked between them.
“What happened seventeen years ago?””
My father became quiet.
Then he spoke.
“Your mother discovered the trust.””
Victoria looked away.
“She knew she couldn’t access the money permanently.””
Daniel added quietly:
“Because the trust belonged to Emily.””
My father nodded.
“She wanted control.””
“And when you refused?””
My father looked at me.
“She arranged a meeting.””
My stomach tightened.
“What kind of meeting?””
“A meeting where she planned to convince me to transfer everything to her.””
Victoria interrupted.
“That’s not what happened.””
My father ignored her.
“When I refused, she threatened to ruin me.””
Daniel looked at his mother.
“You threatened your husband?””
Victoria’s face hardened.
“I was protecting myself.””
My father shook his head.
“You were protecting your greed.””
A few customers quietly left the restaurant.
Nobody wanted to be there anymore.
Nobody wanted to miss what happened next.
My father reached into his pocket again.
He pulled out another document.
“I kept evidence.””
Victoria’s eyes widened.
“You don’t have that.””
“I do.””
Daniel stepped closer.
“What is it?””
My father handed him the papers.
Daniel read them.
His expression changed.
“What?””
I looked at him.
“What is it?””
He slowly lowered the papers.
“This proves financial transfers.””
My father nodded.
“Money moved from Bellavita accounts into private accounts.””
Victoria’s face turned pale.
“That doesn’t prove anything.””
Daniel kept reading.
“It has your signature.””
Silence.
I stared at Victoria.
The woman who had humiliated me.
The woman who had watched me kneel on the floor.
The woman who believed money made her untouchable.
Suddenly, she looked very small.
But then she smiled.
A slow, confident smile.
“You still don’t understand.””
Daniel frowned.
“What?””
Victoria looked at me.
“You think knowing the truth means you won.””
I felt a chill.
“What are you talking about?””
She stepped closer.
“Your father left something out.””
My father’s expression changed.
“Victoria.””
She ignored him.
“Emily, there is a reason your father disappeared.””
I looked at my father.
“What is she talking about?””
Nobody answered.
Then Victoria said the one thing that made my blood run cold.
“Because the night he vanished…”
She smiled.
“He wasn’t running from me.””
May you like
A pause.
“He was running from the police.””
