Chapter 7: The Signature That Could Destroy Me

The document on Jasmine's phone carried my name, my signature, and tomorrow's date.

It authorized the transfer of every remaining dollar in the Bennett Children's Foundation.

Nearly $4.2 million.

If that document reached the bank, the money could disappear before anyone realized what had happened.

I stared at the frozen image.

“Jasmine, how did you get the full recording?””

“Emily sent it to me before she disappeared from work. She told me to keep it somewhere safe.”” Jasmine's voice shook.

“I didn't understand what I was looking at until tonight.””

Margaret took out her phone.

“We need to preserve the original file and deliver it to the police. Don't edit it, crop it, or send it through social media.””

“I haven't changed anything,” Jasmine said.

“I saved the original message.””

“Good. We'll document how you received it.””

I looked at the screen again.

Daniel stood beside Stephen Cole, handing him a document while Richard Collins laughed about Caroline being no problem.

The man in the video looked like my husband.

But the expression on his face was unfamiliar. He wasn't frightened. He wasn't arguing. He was cooperating.

“Olivia,” Margaret said gently, “we need to consider the possibility that Daniel is actively involved.””

I closed my eyes.

For seven years, Daniel had been the person I called when something went wrong. When a hotel acquisition threatened to collapse, he helped me work through the numbers. When I struggled after my father's death, he sat beside me until sunrise, reminding me that grief didn't mean I had to abandon everything we'd built.

I'd trusted him with my life.

Now I couldn't tell whether those memories were real or whether I'd simply never noticed the person hiding behind them.

“Get the document to the bank,” I said.

“I want every account associated with the foundation placed under immediate protective review. No transfer should proceed without independent verification.””

Margaret was already making calls.

Within minutes, our bank's fraud department had confirmed that someone had submitted a preliminary request to move the foundation's remaining funds. The transfer was scheduled for 9:00 a.m.

It was 6:42 a.m.

We had less than three hours.

The bank agreed to suspend the request while its security team verified the authorization. However, the representative warned us that the forged document alone wouldn't establish who had submitted it.

“Can they freeze the accounts?”” I asked.

“They can restrict suspicious transactions while the investigation proceeds,” Margaret replied after ending the call.

“But we'll need to cooperate fully and provide supporting evidence.””

“Do it.””

I looked at Thomas Harrison, who had joined us in the archive.

“Until we know otherwise, nobody should have unrestricted access to the foundation's financial systems. Suspend Daniel's credentials, preserve the access logs, and require dual authorization for every payment.””

Thomas nodded.

“I'll handle it immediately.””

“And investigate how someone could create a document with my signature.””

He hesitated.

“Miss Bennett, there may be a problem with that.””

“What problem?””

“Your digital signature template is stored in the executive document system. Several senior employees have permission to access approved templates.””

I stared at him.

“Who?””

“Daniel. Caroline. Two finance managers. And me.””

The list felt like a betrayal written in four names.

“Then preserve their access histories. Don't assume anyone is guilty based on permissions alone.””

Thomas lowered his eyes.

“Understood.””

At 7:15 a.m., Margaret received a call from the police.

They had located Stephen Cole's car near a closed warehouse on the outskirts of Atlanta. The vehicle was empty, but investigators had found a receipt from a twenty-four-hour convenience store nearby.

They were checking the surrounding security footage.

There was still no confirmed sign of Caroline.

I paced the archive, unable to settle.

“Why would Daniel leave that letter if he knew the video existed?”” I asked.

Margaret considered the question.

“Maybe he wrote it before the video was recorded. Maybe someone wanted you to find it. Or perhaps the letter is genuine, and he's trying to protect himself by shifting some of the blame.””

“Every explanation makes him look worse.””

“That's why we follow evidence rather than instinct.””

At 7:38 a.m., my phone rang.

Daniel.

I answered on speaker with Margaret listening beside me.

“Where are you?”” I asked.

His breathing was uneven.

“Olivia, I need to see you.””

“Tell me where you are.””

“I can't do that over the phone.””

“Then tell me why a document bearing my signature is scheduled to transfer $4.2 million from our foundation this morning.””

Silence.

Then Daniel said, “You found the document.””

“Answer me.””

“Listen to me carefully. You need to stop the transfer, but you cannot let Stephen know you've found it.””

“Why?””

“Because he's not acting alone.””

Margaret leaned closer to the phone.

“Daniel, this is Margaret Ellis. If you're prepared to provide information, you need to contact law enforcement and arrange a formal interview.””

“I don't have time for that.””

“Then you need to make time,” I said.

“Where is Caroline?””

His breathing became ragged.

“I don't know.””

“Your name is on the transfer records. You're in a video with Stephen and Richard. You handed them a document while they discussed making Caroline disappear. What do you expect me to believe?””

“I know what it looks like.””

“Then explain it.””

He was quiet for several seconds.

Finally, he said, “Stephen threatened you.””

I gripped the phone.

“What?””

“He said if I didn't cooperate, he'd use the forged documents to make it look like you stole the money. He had copies of your signature, your passwords, and private correspondence. He said he'd destroy your reputation and send you to prison.””

“So you helped him steal from the children to protect me?””

“I thought I could fix it before anyone noticed.””

“You thought?””

My voice cracked.

“Daniel, that money was meant for children who need medical care. You watched me promise their families that we'd help them. How could you sit across from me at dinner and pretend everything was fine?””

“I was trying to find a way out.””

“Then why didn't you come to me?””

“Because I knew you'd go straight to the police.””

“Of course I would!””

He flinched at my shout, even though he was miles away.

Then he said something that made my anger falter.

“Olivia, the person who gave Stephen access to your signature wasn't me.””

“Who was it?””

“I have proof. But you need to understand something first.””

“What?””

“The transfers weren't the original plan. Stephen needed money, but Richard needed something else. They wanted the foundation under their control, and the only way to do that was to make you look like a criminal.””

I looked at Margaret.

Her expression had gone rigid.

“Daniel,” I said slowly, “who is helping them?””

Before he could answer, a sharp sound came through the phone.

A door slammed.

Daniel whispered, “They're here.””

“Who?””

He lowered his voice.

“Olivia, if I don't get out of here, look for the blue ledger. It's not the one your father kept. It's the one he hid after he discovered the first theft.””

Then the call ended.

I immediately called back.

The number was unavailable.

Margaret contacted the police and gave them the details of the call.

I stood motionless, trying to make sense of what Daniel had said.

A second ledger.

My father had hidden it after discovering the first theft.

That meant the financial corruption might have begun long before Daniel joined the foundation.

Long before I inherited the business.

And if Stephen knew about it, he might have been planning this for years.

At 8:03 a.m., the bank confirmed that the $4.2 million transfer had been blocked pending investigation.

I should have felt relieved.

Instead, I stared at the phone in my hand.

Daniel had told me where to look.

But he hadn't told me the one thing I needed most.

May you like

Whether he was trying to save me.

Or preparing me for the moment he betrayed me completely.
