Chapter 13: My Father's Final Arrangement
For several seconds, I couldn't speak.
Caroline's voice crackled through the phone, thin and exhausted.
“Your father hired me five years ago, Olivia. He arranged for me to work in the foundation's administrative department after I finished college. He said he needed someone who could follow the money without attracting attention.””
“But you were my assistant for three years.””
“I know.””
“And you never told me?””
“He made me promise not to reveal the arrangement unless I found evidence of another theft. He believed someone inside the organization was monitoring his investigation.””
I gripped the edge of the conference table.
“My father died four years ago. Why didn't you tell me then?””
“Because I didn't have proof. And because the person I was supposed to report to disappeared shortly after his funeral.””
“Who?””
Caroline hesitated.
“Robert Hale.””
Margaret exchanged a glance with Detective Harris, who had joined us on the call.
“Caroline,” the detective said, “we need you to tell us exactly what happened. Did you know you were being used to investigate the foundation?””
“Yes. But I didn't know how much of the original investigation had been compromised until last year. I found transfers that didn't match the approved budgets. When I tried to trace them, someone accessed my computer remotely and deleted the files.””
“Did you tell Daniel Bennett?””
“Yes. He said he would investigate it himself.””
I closed my eyes.
Of course he had.
Daniel had been the person I turned to whenever something went wrong. He knew the foundation's structure, its accounts, and the people who had access to its records.
He had also known exactly how to keep me from discovering what was happening.
“What did Daniel do?”” I asked.
“He told me Stephen Cole was handling a temporary financial restructuring. He said the transfers would be reversed before the next audit. I didn't believe him, so I kept investigating.””
“And that's when you disappeared?””
“Yes. I found a copy of an original bank confirmation in a storage file. It showed that the money had been diverted years before Daniel became involved.
I confronted Stephen. He threatened me, and I went to Daniel.””
My stomach tightened.
“What did Daniel say?””
“He told me to stop looking. He said he was trying to protect you.””
A bitter laugh escaped me.
“Everyone claims they're protecting me.””
“Olivia, I know what I did was wrong. I should have told you everything. But your father made me promise, and by the time I understood how dangerous the situation had become, I was afraid someone would hurt you.””
“Someone already hurt you.””
“I know.””
Her words were quiet, and suddenly my anger had nowhere to go.
Caroline had been manipulated, threatened, and held against her will. She had made mistakes, but she had also risked her life trying to uncover the theft.
“Where is the truth file?”” I asked.
“At the old Bennett Hotel. Not in the office itself. Your father hid it in the maintenance records room behind the original ballroom.””
Thomas Harrison, standing beside me, straightened.
“That room was sealed when the building closed,” he said.
“Only the property management company has access.””
“Can you open it?””
“Yes.””
Detective Harris immediately arranged for officers to secure the building before anyone entered. He also requested that Caroline's location remain confidential while police investigated who had taken her there.
Before the call ended, Caroline spoke again.
“There's one more thing.””
“What?””
“Your father didn't just investigate the theft. He created a legal mechanism to recover the money if he couldn't finish the investigation himself.””
“What kind of mechanism?””
“A clause in the foundation's original trust. It allows an independent trustee to freeze any disputed assets connected to the fund, provided the original bank confirmations establish that the money was misappropriated.””
Margaret leaned forward.
“Do you know who the independent trustee is?””
“Yes,” Caroline replied.
“It's Peter Lang.””
That changed everything.
Peter had kept the blue ledger for years. He had also been the one person my father trusted to preserve the records.
If the trust clause was valid, Peter could help us freeze the stolen assets before they disappeared again.
We contacted him immediately.
He arrived at the hotel less than an hour later, carrying a worn leather briefcase.
When I showed him my father's letter and the bank confirmations, he read every page in silence.
Finally, he nodded.
“Your father anticipated this possibility. He asked me to retain the records and prepare for an emergency recovery action if the foundation's assets were ever threatened.””
“Can you freeze the trust?””
“Not based on suspicion alone. But these original confirmations, combined with the transfer records, may establish sufficient grounds for an emergency application.””
“How quickly?””
“Tonight, if the bank's legal department cooperates. Tomorrow at the latest.””
I felt a small measure of hope.
Then Peter opened his briefcase and removed a document I hadn't seen before.
It was a copy of the original trust agreement.
The agreement listed Robert Hale as the founding trustee, Daniel as a later administrator, and Evelyn as a designated beneficiary.
But a handwritten amendment changed the arrangement.
The amendment transferred controlling authority to a private holding company after Robert's retirement.
I recognized the company name from the suspicious transactions.
Northbridge Advisory Group.
“Stephen's company,” I whispered.
“His company on paper,” Peter corrected.
“The original registration records indicate that Northbridge was controlled through another entity.””
He turned the page.
The controlling entity was called *Meridian Strategic Partners*.
Evelyn's company.
I looked toward the window, where the Atlanta skyline was turning gold in the late afternoon light.
“Evelyn said she never received the money.””
“She may be telling the truth,” Peter replied.
“A beneficiary doesn't necessarily control an account. We need the bank's original records to determine who issued the instructions.””
“And who did?””
Peter studied the final page.
“Your father suspected Robert Hale. But the last authorization was issued after Hale retired.””
“By whom?””
Peter's expression hardened.
“The signature belongs to Daniel Bennett.””
I felt the familiar ache of betrayal, but this time I refused to let it overwhelm me.
“Then we ask Daniel to explain it.””
Detective Harris located Daniel at a small hotel near the airport. He had contacted the police earlier that day and agreed to cooperate, but he had refused to speak with me until he could provide a complete statement.
I called him anyway.
He answered on the second ring.
“Olivia.””
“Did you authorize the amendment to the trust?””
Silence.
“Daniel, answer me.””
“Yes.””
My throat tightened.
“Why?””
“Because Stephen told me the money belonged to an investment reserve your father had created. He showed me documents that appeared to support it.””
“You signed the authorization.””
“I did.””
“You were the trustee.””
“I was the administrative trustee. I didn't control the entire account.””
“But you helped move the money.””
“Yes.””
For once, he didn't offer an excuse.
I stared at the trust agreement.
“Did you know Caroline had been hired by my father to investigate the foundation?””
“No. I only learned that after Stephen discovered she was tracing the transfers.””
“Then why did you help him silence her?””
“I didn't know he was going to take her. I told him to frighten her into stopping the investigation. I never agreed to anything beyond that.””
The admission made me feel physically sick.
“You thought threatening my employee was acceptable?””
“No. I thought I could stop the investigation long enough to fix what I'd done. I was wrong.””
“Where is Stephen now?””
“I don't know. But I can tell you where he planned to move the money.””
I straightened.
“Where?””
“An account in London. He intended to transfer everything before the bank could flag the transaction.””
“Everything?””
“The remaining foundation funds. The trust assets. Whatever he could reach.””
“How much?””
Daniel's answer came quietly.
“More than six million dollars.””
I looked at Peter.
He was already reaching for his phone.
“Olivia,” Daniel said, “there's something else. Stephen didn't create the scheme. He inherited it from Robert Hale. And the person who helped Hale establish the original account is still alive.””
“Who?””
Daniel took a shaky breath.
“Your father's brother.””

My uncle, Charles Bennett, had been dead for twelve years.
At least, that was what our family had always believed.
