Chapter 8: The Night My Mother Disappeared

The factory suddenly felt smaller.

The broken walls.

The empty space.

The cold air.

Everything disappeared.

There was only one question.

“What happened that night?””

My father looked at me.

“Valeria.””

“No.””

My voice was quiet.

But firm.

“Answer me.””

Lucian stood behind him.

Watching.

Waiting.

My father looked like he wanted to say a thousand things.

But only one came out.

“Your mother was investigating something.””

“What?””

He swallowed.

“The company.””

I felt my stomach drop.

“What about it?””

“There were missing funds.””

Lucian laughed bitterly.

“Not missing.””

My father looked at him.

“Enough.””

“No.””

Lucian stepped forward.

“She discovered that someone inside the company was stealing from employees.””

I looked at my father.

“And you knew?””

“I suspected.””

“Did you tell her?””

“Yes.””

“Then why was she investigating?””

My father was silent.

Lucian answered.

“Because she discovered it was closer to home than anyone expected.””

I looked at Lucian.

“Are you saying my father did it?””

“No.””

The answer surprised me.

Lucian shook his head.

“I’m saying your father protected someone.””

My father’s face changed.

“Stop.””

“Tell her.””

“Not here.””

“Then where?””

I turned toward my father.

“Tell me.””

He looked exhausted.

“I was trying to protect your mother.””

“From who?””

He looked down.

“From my own mistake.””

The words hit harder than accusations.

“What mistake?””

My father sat on an old metal chair.

For the first time, he looked old.

“I trusted the wrong person.””

Lucian’s expression hardened.

“Finally.””

My father ignored him.

“There was someone working with us.””

“Who?””

He looked at me.

“Your uncle.””

I froze.

“My uncle?””

My father nodded.

“My older brother.””

I had heard stories about him.

But barely.

My father always said he left the family years before.

“He was involved?””

“Yes.””

“And Mom found out?””

“Yes.””

I looked at Lucian.

“And you knew?””

He nodded.

“Your mother came to me first.””

“Why?””

“Because she believed I would listen.””

The sadness in his voice was real.

“She was right.””

My father looked at him.

“But you still failed her.””

The words cut.

Lucian didn’t argue.

That surprised me.

“What happened after she found out?””

My father looked away.

“She wanted to report it.””

“And?””

“I asked her to wait.””

“Why?””

“Because I wanted proof.””

My voice became sharper.

“And while you waited, she died.””

Nobody spoke.

The truth hurt because it was simple.

Not because my father caused it.

Because he hesitated.

Lucian looked at me.

“That hesitation destroyed everything.””

My father stood.

“I know.””

The admission was quiet.

And somehow worse.

I had spent years believing my mother’s death was just tragedy.

Now I realized it was a chain of choices.

People deciding.

People waiting.

People hiding.

Then Lucian walked toward me.

“There is one more thing.””

My father immediately reacted.

“No.””

I turned.

“What?””

Lucian looked at him.

“She deserves to know.””

My father’s voice became desperate.

“Valeria, don’t listen.””

That frightened me.

Because my father never begged.

“What is it?””

Lucian handed me a small envelope.

“This was your mother’s.””

My hands shook as I opened it.

Inside was a letter.

My mother’s handwriting.

The first words made my heart stop.

*Valeria, if you are reading this, it means I was not able to tell you myself.*

I couldn’t breathe.

My father stepped closer.

“Don’t.””

I looked at him.

“Why?””

Because his eyes answered before his mouth did.

He was afraid of what I would discover.

I continued reading.

*Your father loves you more than anything in this world. But there is something he has hidden from you.*

My hands trembled.

I looked up.

Lucian was watching.

My father looked broken.

The letter continued.

*The person who betrayed our family is someone you know.*

A cold feeling spread through me.

Someone I know.

Someone close.

Then I reached the final line.

May you like

And my entire world changed.

*Valeria, trust no one who carries the Moretti name.*
